1. Hi All,

Had the Gastric Sleeve done on Monday morning 11/11/19 at NYU Medical Center in NY.

I’m super pleased to report that everything went extremely well and that I was really surprised with how manageable the discomfort has been post-op.

For those of you considering it and nervous about the pain and suffering after surgery, don’t let it be the reason you cancel of postpone. Go through with it and take your future health in your own hands.

My procedure was at 7:30 am on Monday. It lasted about 1.5 hours. During the surgery the doctor fixed a hiatal hernia and also took a biopsy of a small growth on my liver which thankfully turned out to be fine by pathology. Basically speaking, I ended up with 3 for 1 and honestly, had that liver thing shown up on a CT scan I would have wanted it biopsied anyway, so this was a blessing in disguise.

Immediately after surgery, I was taken to PACU and stayed there for about an hour or so to recover from the anesthesia. Zero nausea, pain or vomiting. In fact, before going up to my room they had me walk several laps, which I did without any difficulty.

In the room, the only issue I had was gas pressure (a sort of dull cramping feeling) on the left side of my stomach. Zero pain on the right side where the stomach pouch was stapled and removed. They had me up and around, walking and sitting in a chair for most of the day sipping ice chips and Water out of those little one oz plastic cups. Zero hunger, despite basically fasting for 48 hours before surgery and a liquid diet for the two weeks pre-op. They were ahead of all my pain and symptoms by giving me Zofran for nausea, Levsin for inflammation and 10mg of Roxy (Hydrocodone w/ tylenol). The monitored all vitals carefully, had me walk every few hours and made sure that I was peeing. The gas pressure persisted, but it eventually got better. Still had not passed gas.

The following day, the goal was for me to complete a drinking challenge, which consists of drinking 4 one ounce cups of liquid every hour for 4 consecutive hours (basically 16 oz of clear fluid). On the first try I got through the first three hours, but couldn’t complete the last hour so they had me wait. Ended up completing it later that evening, so they decided to keep me another night. Finally started to pass gas and even had a movement, so they discharged me today. Only real problem last night and in the morning was some reflux that they gave me Protonix and some Malox to counteract.

Moving around and walking is basically normal, but I’m being very careful not to bend down or lift anything heavier than 5-10 lbs.

When I got home I did feel a bit hungry, so with the Doctor’s clearance, I attempted small sips of Slim Fast Advanced High Protein. The first ounce went down good, but the second one caused a sharp pain which might have been my first experience with dumping syndrome due to the sugar alcohols in the Slim Fast.

Still experiencing some lingering reflux, slight nausea and a bit sore, but definitely progressing.

For those of you who are further along, what have your experiences been transitioning with liquids and diet? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
That's great to hear. Gets better each day.

2. Hey guys just a little update on me surgery dat nov 1,2019 11 days post op I’m almost always hungry I can eat soft foods like egg ground turkey but I mostly thrive off sugar free popsicle Protein Shake mostly only one a day and at most 40 oz of Water and be feeling like I’m drowning sometimes even when taking slow sips so I’ll just walk it off to help with the uncomfortableness but each day I’m starving I feel like mind over matter because I know I’m not hungry but other than that I’m doing good just need to focus on getting all my Protein and Water in pretty close on water but Protein is harder for me I have two week follow up with dr on Monday happy to c how that goes but other than that just taking it day by day how is everyone else doing
I hear that. I was sleeved on November 4th. I had my follow up with the surgeon today. He said everything looks good. Said I can move to puree when I get 64 ounces of liquid in for 2 days straight. I'm really struggling with 40. Although, I got in 55 grams of protein today. Otherwise, I feel great. I definitely feel hunger at times, although not a whole day. I went back to work yesterday, at 1 week. I've been sleeping better and able to sleep more on my side. Never thought I'd look forward so much to 2 ounces of pureed tuna....

3. Scheduled for gastric sleeve first thing tomorrow morning at NYU. Must say, I’m a bit nervous about the recovery process and not being able to eat/enjoy certain foods, but the alternative is decreasing health and things breaking down over time. Ballooned up to 311 (5’7) and decided it was finally time to fix it. Pre-op has gone well and I’m down to 280. Did think for a second that perhaps I could just continue with the pre-op process and avoid the surgery, but I know it’s not realistic.

Hoping that everything will go well so I can be on my feet and back to work for some travel I have scheduled in December.

Made a point of not telling a lot of people. Mom is super supportive, but my wife still seems a bit on the fence.

Any advice on what I can truly expect would be great!

Thanks!
Hey. Another male sleever here (as of 11/4). I was really scared and anxious, but it went so much better than I thought. First few days are not the most fun, but I'm sure you're prepared for that. I'm day 6 and feeling so much better. Back to the office tomorrow. Best of luck.

4. Hey MeredithElaine how are you today? We're 2 days out and I'm feeling worse today than yesterday. Its all manageable but I'm having a harder time getting the Water down. It makes a gurgling noise and wants to come back up lol. I've got 43 oz. liquid and 60g Protein in today. Drinking the Protein20 water so I get both at the same time.
I'm amazed you were able to get that much down. At 2 days, I was struggling to get 20 ozs in. I'm at day 5 now and getting closer to 40. I also finished a Greek yogurt today. Took me over an hour...12g of protien...I also made some sugar free instant pudding with skim milk and once ready, added whey protein powerd along with P2B. Easy and tasty way to get 30 grams of protein in.

5. Hey everyone! I just got home. Surgery was yesterday morning 7:30am. I'm still pretty doped up right now but I wanted to fill you in on my experience. (sorry if it's long) Everyone at the hospital was wonderful and they were like a machine getting ready for surgery (at 5:30am when I checked in). Anesthesia people couldn't have been nicer but I was ready to rip my IV out and run lol. I ended up having a really bad hiatal hernia that the Surgeon repaired while she was in there. Surgery took almost 3 hours because of that. When I woke up in recovery I was so so so so uncomfortable. It's a feeling I can't even describe, it was just awful. I was in recovery for about 2 hours but thankfully I was only awake for a really short time. When I got to the room the Surgeon was there explaining the procedure and saying I did great with the liquid diet because my liver was really small lol. She asked me if I wanted to see the pictures! I couldn't look right then. I slept on and off the rest of Wednesday and had great pain meds. Only 1 time did the nurse ask me to walk and we did one lap. This is the crazy part - I had zero gas pain or feeling of gas at all! Nothing. Not sure what I was feeling in the recovery room, that may have been gas. My Surgeon does the first leak test while she's still in you so as soon as I was in my room I was allowed the little cups of water! Oddly they were really easy to get down. Once in a while I would get a little gurgling and slowed back down. This morning I had another leak test. They kept warning me the drink was awful but I thought it was fine. Not nasty at all. Tasted a bit like malox or mylanta. I passed the leak test and they brought me a big bowl of broth and a thing of Jello for Breakfast and lunch. I almost finished the Jello and had a few sips of the broth. My surgeon said her goal for me to go home was for me to pee and I did, a lot. I had the IV fluids running in me on top of what I was drinking so I needed to go. My incisions are really small and the only one that bothers me is the one they pulled the stomach through. I'm sipping, walking and using the breathing tool. I actually feel great. I hope I don't have a repeat of what kia h went through where she felt great and then day 3 was rough. Sorry to ramble on, I just wanted to give you what I could remember while its fresh in my oxycodone filled mind. Any word from my surgery twin MeredithElaine? How about the ones that went in today? MyNextSeason or Ivy Rose were going in today. Praying they are all doing well!

Great to hear. Welcome to this side of the surgery.

6. I am schedule for sleeve surgery on 11/15 and start pre surgery prep tomorrow. I am more scared than anything and feeling very overwhelmed and hoping/praying that I won’t fail. Anyone in west broward having surgery around this time? In need of a buddy.
Hey there. I just got sleeved on Monday (11/4) at Coral Springs Medical Center with Dr. Wizman. I was scared and anxious out of my mind. Thank G-d, everything went so much better than I expected. It hasn't been a walk in the park, but everything went as well as it could have. Who is your surgeon?

7. Thanks everyone SO MUCH for the thoughts and prayers. So quick recap: went in for my sleeve on 11/1. When I came out of recovery I immediately did not feel right. I was up and walking right away but so nauseous. All the other sleeved patients look so much better than I did! I was shaky and vomiting for the next 3 days. I failed my upper GI test twice. The contrast would not move past my esophagus into my stomach. I found out along the way that I had the sleeve done AND a hernia repair. They let me eat and discharged me home despite these complications on my 3rd day. My first night at home I vomited 5 times. I called my surgeon and he told me to come back in the morning so he could do an EGD. Went back to the hospital and they tried to do a cat scan with MORE DYE. I told them I couldn't drink it and proved it by throwing it up. They finally got themselves together and took me back to the OR where I had the EGD done and repair once more of my hernia. Apparently, my sleeve came up through the hernia and was blocking and putting pressure on my esophagus. It's why I couldn't swallow and food wouldn't go all the way down. I came out of recovery feeling 1000% better. I got discharged back home yesterday and I'm tolerating my clears no problem. GUYS, thanks so much for thinking of me. Please advocate for yourselves. If you dont feel right, you guys know your bodies! Don't be afraid to speak up and fight for yourselves.

Thanks. Miserable night trying to get comfortable but feeling a little better this morning. Gas is slowly reducing. Pain is manageable and looking forward to getting better and better. Good luck to all going in today.

9. So, I was discharged today about noon. I got home and have been pretty uncomfortable most of the day. Been walking when I can but I feel beat. I tried holding off on the pain meds but caved in. Getting enough fluids in has been tough today. The Constipation is perhaps the biggest problem today. Looking forward to feeling better tomorrow.

I forgot one important thing. For most of the day, I was very hungry. I was not really prepared for that. The staff told me it was very normal.

I just woke up (TMI warning) and urinated 300 ccs which hopefully will get me an early discharge. As I write this, I am physically very hungry. Granted, I haven't eaten any solid food in a few days.

Not sure how I'll feel about this in a few days, but for right now, I'm really looking forward to some broth this morning.
