Bensmum - do you have an incentive spirometer? Due to pain after surgery the bodies natural reaction is to only take shallow breathes to avoid the pain. Some hospitals give you a spirometer that you need to use 10 times per hour to induce deep breaths. If you don’t have one make sure you try deep breathing every hour to make it easier when you have to exert yourself (also prevents post surgical pneumonia)
Good luck,
Lynn

Update: I got the 100% whey protien from GNC and now that I mix it with Carb Countdown milk the consistancy doesn't bother me as much (never thought I would drink milk again but a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do) Between the powder and the milk I come out at 31g of protien per shake (30g is the most your body will absorb at one time so this works out perfectly)
I looked at the clear Isopure - and I guess if you drank half in the morning and half at night it would work well but the powder was about double the cost of the whey protien and seemed like kind of a waste as 30g is all I need in one sitting.
Thanks for the pudding suggestion. I have some SF FF Cheesecake pudding I may throw in to my shake to make a chocolate cheesecake shake - Yum!

Pureen and strained sounds like it may be full liquid - are they requiring you to strain out any chunks? This is my full liquid menu:
Beverages:
Skim or 1% milk
Low sugar, decaffeinated, non-carbonated Fluid (crystal light, Fruit2o, etc)
Low sugar, low fat, high Protein supplements (CIB, Protein shakes)
Dairy products
Low fat, light yogurt
SF, FF pudding & custard
Low fat cottage cheese (blended)
Low fat cream Soups thinned down with 1 cup low fat milk (strained of chunks or blended)
Low fat broth
Miscellaneous
Plain hot cream of wheat or otameal (must be pourable consistancy)
SF popsicle
unsweetened applesauce
SF Gelatin
I am on this diet until 3 weeks post op.
Good luck,
-
Thanks for that addition La Madam - as I haven't eaten solids yet - that will be enough to keep me from even thinking about cheating a little - I'm a pain wimp.

Hi, Yes that is true. The amount of time after eating before you can drink is kind of debated 1/2 hour or full hour but NO drinking with or right after meals.
You have to chew your food really well so that it is small enough to pass through your stoma (small opening from pouch to stomach) but you want the food to stay in the pouch as long as possible to keep your full. If you drink while eating and up to an hour after you are just going to wash the food out of your pouch into your stomach and you will be hungry right away. Kinda counter productive. Hope this helps.
Good luck with your decision,
-
LOL, I don't think home insurance covers acts of God, Nature or Gastric Instability. Sorry!

Ahhh. Note to self - bring extra undies to work!

Welcome aboard - good luck on your surgery (just had mine 9/12/05)!
-
Welcome aboard - good luck with your approval - I have BCBS and was told that I would have no problems (which I didn't, they were wonderful) but I was still on pins and needles until I got the official word. You'll be fine - just stay relaxed.
-
It is great when you realize that you are not "the only one" even if it is poop that we have in common. Hot Like Her - Please tell me this isn't really going to last that long - I have to go back to work next week and my excess gas is not going to go over well there - We have really bad ventilation and none of the windows open - I'm doomed!! I would try to blame it on someone else but the rumbles that proceed the release sound like thunder in a closed room - Oh Well, maybe they'll send me home with pay just to get their sense of smell back??

Hey all - another Sept 12th here. Sounds like everyone is doing wonderfully! I also have 6 insicions - one at 1.5", one at 1" and the other 4 are just punctures. Add those to the 2 from my gallbladder last month (he re-used one of the holes) and I am starting to look like a human pin cushion.
So is everyone getting in their Water and protien - I believe the liquid diet is held in high contempt with most of us. I am drooling at comercials now - not good.
Keep in touch,

Do they offer free care? If they take any state or federal money they must offer free care to people who meet a certian income limit (sometimes these limits are a lot higher than you would expect).
Good luck,

:rolleyes OK so I am 3 days post-op and suddenly the dreaded BM is on my mind - a lot. Nobody likes it but it needs to be done. I'm sitting at the computer this morning with my feet up on a chair so that I'm comfy - well if you could have heard the noises I was making - it would have scared small children. I'm tooting away happy as can be when I get that "Oh oh this may be more than ordinary gas" feeling. So off to the WC I go. Sit comfortably and ..... nothing ...... not a wimper, not a sigh, nothing at all.
OK false alarm, back to the PC I go. No sooner do I get comfy - feet back up - when the special effects tape starts again - such noises. So off to the potty I go again with the same results - silence.
Back to my chair - you get the picture. Well I had had enough the next set from the bowel orchastra that sent me scrambling to the WC - I brought my chair with me - fully intending to sit back, put up my feet and wait this thing out.
Needless to say - the mere threat was enough to get my bowels doing their job - I am in happy BM status now. I know - just a little to much info - but it had to be told.
Have a good day!
-
buying the big "kegs" is the most economical - if you can find one you like. Go to GNC and pick one out that has protien Isolate in the ingredients - that is a higher quality than the concentrate. Keep your receipt - try it for a few days - if you dont like it GNC will take it back and refund your money. Keep trying untill you find one you like.
Good luck,
-
Wow, it is amazing how different each doctor is with their after care. I am on a full liquid diet for the first 3 weeks (banded 9/12/05 the day before you)
This is my menu until I go back for my 3 week check up - that is when I can move to mushies.
Beverages:
Skim or 1% milk
Low sugar, decaffeinated, non-carbonated Fluid (crystal light, Fruit2o, etc)
Low sugar, low fat, high Protein supplements (CIB, Protein shakes)
Dairy products
Low fat, light yogurt
SF, FF pudding & custard
Low fat cottage cheese (blended)
Low fat cream Soups thinned down with 1 cup low fat milk (strained of chunks or blended)
Low fat broth
Miscellaneous
Plain hot cream of wheat or otameal (must be pourable consistancy)
SF popsicle
unsweetened applesauce
SF Gelatin
So far I haven't been hungry but I am getting in 3-4 CIB with Carb Countdown milk so that I keep up my protien. The rest of the day I'm sipping Water or popsicles.
Good luck,
-
bandayed - welcome to the site. Which surgeon are you using? Dr. Jones just did my band on Monday - he is wonderful. If you have any questions that I can answer from a patients point of view ask away.
Good luck,
-
Here you go - Awsome pic!
-
Hey Christi, Welcome to bandland - I just arrived on the 12th and today is the first day that I have had a problem with gas - I personally find that walking is breaking it up and getting it out better than the gas-x.
Good luck,
-
OK Here is mine!
-
Thanks for all of the support, you guys are great!
MaseAnn - I have had my band for two whole days now and have yet to feel anything that I thought was the band. I am still to sore to poke around and find my port - I did see it under flouroscopey(sp) and that was way cool. The only "pain" I am in right now is major gas pain....sorry if it sounds gross but I wouldn't encourage any company around day three 'cuz you sound & smell pretty funky!! That being said everything else seems to be working fine, I am weaning myself off of the percoset and am comfortable as long as I dont stand up to long, but that is getting better every day.
I guess that I had hoped that I would be one of those people that were out shopping & sightseeing the next day (as I have seen in a couple of posts) but alas I feel like I've had surgery and I will be taking it very easy for a few more days (but I would do it all over again if this tool helps me the way I think it will). Good luck next week - you will do great!
-
I'm back and happily medicated - ebonysilk how are you?
-
Hey all, I made it! My band & I are home and will be enjoying our liquid percocet. I am in more pain than i expected but i think my expectations were slightly out of wack. Coupled with the fact that i got zero sleep at the hospital I am a little cranky. hopefully a good nights sleep will have me feeling 100% better tomorrow.
Barium is woderfull compared to the clear stuff they have you drink first, But seeing your band & port under flouroscopy is awsome!!
Let me kow if you have any questions while it is still fresh in my mind.
Thanks for all your kind words & well wishes,
-
I'll be leaving in a half hour for the hospital to be banded. I want to wish good luck to everyone else starting their journey today!
See ya'll tomorrow!
