  1. I found a handout that said that maladsoprtion decreases over time: http://www.muschealth.com/weightlosssurgery/nutrition/Handouts/HandoutGBP%20how%20it%20works.pdf But no research
  2. Under the law they cannot exclude you for pre-existing conditions; nor can they deny you needed treatment. The problem may be that they require something different to authorize the surgery. Your best bet is to just call the new insurance company and ask them before you change

please help with my class project on obesity

Prehaps you could go back to your team and get permission to add the demographic of race immediately. One of the limitation of the study will be that you did not collect racial data on everyone -- but depending on where you are in the study - that might not be a significant limitation. Also, given the online nature of the survey - it can be easily modified without affecting the surveys you have already collected.

please help with my class project on obesity

You really don't seem to have a clue how infurating it is to read that your purpose is "understanding the tough issues that a patient with obesity" - and by leaving out race you have already made a decision that it is not an important factor - ugh.

please help with my class project on obesity

No not really. your research is not so preliminary as to collect other demographic. Your failure to collect race means that future research will be shaped without knowing preliminarily the role of race. Without race your research is fundamentally flawed. IT can be corrected.

please help with my class project on obesity

I started the survey and stopped because it does not collect data about race. I get tired of research asking every demographic question (age, gender, occupation, education) and not asking for racial/identity. Without that question you will not be able to answer the question of whether race makes a difference in happiness. That makes the research study flawed. Because race and racism is a powerful factor in many obese people lives. Similarly sexual orientation should be a demographic question
  10. Thanks for raising this question - I did some research http://www.mygastricbypassstory.com/2012/03/29/gastric-bypass-medical-alert-id-bracelets/ and decided that the alert was a good idea. 12. I teach health care law and HIPPA specifically. You are right the weight may be sufficient enough identifier depending on the size of the town. In New York City, I suspect there are at least several hundred 600lb men not so much in Dayton, OH. Your job is correct that the better part of valor is never discuss patients even generically. A generic discussion may be inappropriate for a lot of reasons -- BUT without identifying information it is not a violation of HIPPA. http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/privacy/hipaa/understanding/coveredentities/De-identification/guidance.html
  13. I don't think he violated HIPPA unless he provided identifying information OR he lived in a town with so few large 600 lb people it would be easily to identify. NEVERTHELESS His behavior was unprofessional and unethical and he should be reported to his supervisor.
  14. My understanding is 6 months to a year. I carry around a 20oz sipping bottle and drink it about 3-4 hours. I do 3 to 4 per day and I am drinking constantly. Glupping anything but Water can lead to significant unwanted calories. If you buy something like camelbak eddy it will prevent you from glupping. You are not just protecting your pouch -- you are changing habits for the future.
  15. His approach and comments were totally inappropriate and you should file a complaint with his supervisor.

    Food addiction issues

You know this is a mental issue, right? Are you working with a psychologist? To help you understand and address the underlying issues. I don't think your surgeon or your nutritionist can be helpful. food addiction has to be addressed like other addictions by seeking continuous help from a qualified counselor.

When you can't even be honest with yourself

It is not about sharing it is about misleading. It seems to me if through some conversation, a discussion arises around a person's weight loss. The only honest response is (a) I'd rather not discuss it or ( I had WLS any other response really can leave the impression that you lost weight soley through exercise/diet - that is horribly misleading and damaging to others. While a person has every right to keep their medical history private, I really don't think the person should directly or indirectly lie.
  18. May be you all should go into counseling together. Seems like he has a lot of fears and could work to sabatoge.

    What to do about Thanksgiving?

My concern is establishingunrealistic expectation. You should plan around the "worst" happening. What if your recouperaion doesn't go well. What if you have complications? If you plan for them - then if they don't happen, you will have a nice quiet thanksgiving. If you don't plan for them and they do happen, you will have an unbelievable stressful thanksgiving. Tell everyone there will absolutely be no thanksgiving at the house. If they want to go out for thanksgiving dinner - but you will not be playing host because you will be recuperating from surgery. Don't set yourself up by keeping your surgery a secret. and by having unrealistic expectations. 2 weeks post surgery. -- rest and relax.
