  1. I had no internal pain and no nausea, but was on nausea medication. Four of my incisions were fine, but the largest one hurt MUCH worse than expected. I could't move easily for several days. However, the pain got better quickly, and I could move around very well by 5-6 days out. Started a new job on day 9 and I have been fine.

  2. My insurance approval letter (BCBS) came in saying that I was approved for surgery and then there was a date in a right hand column beside it that says 9/22/2014-9/23/2014. What is this date for? My pre-op appt is on the 23rd, but my surgery date is 9/27. Does this need to be addressed?

  3. I kept telling myself the same thing--you can follow the diet without the surgery. And I did….MANY TIMES. I can't stop the regain after the diet. I finally faced the fact that if I wanted long term good health, this was my only option.

People who are thin don't understand because they keep it off long term. Those who are overweight and criticize either 1) don't recognize the health issues, 2) are afraid of surgery, or 3) are threatened by the idea of you succeeding.

I know you (and me!) will be successful this time! Hang in there.

  4. I have been contemplating having bariatric surgery for years. I didn't like the sound of either the bypass or the band, and hated the idea of a 6 month supervised diet, but finally decided that it just had to be done or I would die fat and early, and leave my five year old without a mom. I asked my doctor for a referral, and was told that I needed to sign up for a seminar first.

I went to the website of a surgical group my doc recommended, and was delighted to discover their post that BCBS had dropped the supervised diet requirement two days previously, and that I could do the seminar online. Since then, it seems like things have moved at lightning speed. After meeting with the surgeon, I opted for the gastric sleeve. (I still am not crazy about the bypass or band options, even though I know they have been very successful for others.) Got got all my testing done, and after a glitch or two due to transferring to a COBRA policy my insurance got approved. I found out today that I will have my pre-op appt and get my surgery date on Monday. Can't wait! Nurse said surgery may be by the end of September!

  5. Olivia, don't know about self pay, but if you are in the triangle area, consider Bariatric Specialists in Cary. There are also some surgeons in Charlotte with good records for the sleeve. You shouldn't have a problem finding a surgeon to do the operation close by you. My doc recommended the sleeve over the lap band, even though he could do either for approx same out of pocket for me. Again, not sure about self-pay. I have noticed that the prices quoted for surgery in Mexico are similar to what I will be paying out of pocket after my insurance pays.

  6. I had really bad timing. I decided to start on this process knowing that I was resigning from a job, but that I planned to keep the same insurance benefits through COBRA. I didn't know that the COBRA policy had to actually begin to be approved for surgery. Apparently you get a new insurance number. So they submitted my case to BCBS about two weeks ago, and were told to wait until September 1 for the new policy to be in effect to resubmit. I feel like I have been on hold the entire month of August!

  7. Hi, I am 49, and live in NC. I think I might be September. I did an online class, then met surgeon on July 26. I had chest X-ray, ultrasound, EKG, and upper gi on the 6th, and psych and nutrition today. Don' t need sleep study--already know I have sleep apnea. My "results" visit is on Aug. 26, and I get my surgery date then. I don't even know when my approval goes to insurance! When do they usually submit?
