    11weeks out Sick & Depressed!

Yea, i'm only 3 weeks out but have been back to the hospital once with severe uti and dehydration. And it seems like every time one pain disappears another one shows up. I am supposed to start gym this afternoon but I got a hot knife in one of those rny holes. And I am so tired and i just want to crawl back into bed. I am excited with the way my life is changing, but tired of being tired and hurting.
  2. Since starting on soft food after returning from the hospital (severe uti and dehydration), I have been eating with the family again. It's been nice and now my sister is joining the healthy kick! Next stop - cooking again! She and I joined a gym today and I am so excited to get started ... i'm riding a high! Can't wait to see my therapist tomorrow; he will be sooo pleased.
  3. I am 10 days post-op. When I first started this whole WLS thing, my sister and nephew (who I live with) were both gonna diet along with me ... yadda, yadda; well, that fell through. When I started doing the pre-op diet I found it very difficult sitting with them at the table. She has changed nothing about the way she cooks (gravies, Pasta, bakes cakes, Cookies on her dresser, Breyer's in the freezer) and I am having a very hard time with this. I ended up moving to my room where I could eat in peace. I go to the kitchen 3 times a day to make my meals and that's it. Am I being a chicken? I start my pureed food Wednesday and it sure would be nice to eat with the family again. I know I am 100% committed to this (lost 45 lbs so far) but sure hate pushing my face in it. Hard enough as it is just smelling it. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
  4. YEA! First 50 lbs goal reached. So happy!!

  5. Tuesday, Sept. 2 with my 2 week post-op. Ended up in the ER Monday morning. Wasn't feeling well Saturday and Sunday and called my Dr, Monday morning and told him I had had a low grade fever for 2 days, stomach pain(not sever, but bad enough) so he said he would met me in the ER. Come to find out I had a sever UTI and was severely dehydrated. Took them 3 hrs, 5 different nurses, and 8 holes in my arms to find blood. Ended up with a PICC line and if you don't know what that is; well, you're just better off not knowing. He let me come home 2 days early as long as I drank my 64 ozs. Well, that was certainly horrible and I haven't weighed but bet the Hospital put a good 7 or 8 lbs on me I have to lose again. I was on such a roll too... Oh well, ladies ... keep lifting that glass ... you do NOT want to end up needing a PICC line. Another little adventure to go into WLS book, Can't wait until I feel better so I can start exercising again Good to be home!.
  6. Thank you everyone from the bottom of my heart for your suggestions and the quick kick in the pants. Everyone is right ... I made the commitment, not them. This was my choice, not theirs. Beginning today I will eat with my family at dinner and enjoy myself. I've missed talking with them at the table. I seem to be in a mind-set of seeing all the things that I can't have (which get me here) instead of seeing all the things on the horizon ... shopping in regular stores, being able to climb stairs, have stamina, not feel like everyone is watching me and laughing. I want to fly a kite! I want to do a 5k with my son. I WANT TO FEEL GOOD!!! Needed this to readjust my outlook. I was looking back instead of forward. Shame on me! I have this mental picture in my head of a Roman-looking soldier holding a banner (always loved those short skirts ) with the Bariatric Pal symbol and singing, "Onward weigh-loss soldiers, marching on to war..." This is a war, against old habits, old mental and emotional reasons that caused us the make the choices we did. Also, thank you for reminding me that the glass is half-full... You guys are awesome!!

    Post op pain

i had the same thing ... extreme pain on the left side, and then they want you to cough!?! That was the toughest part but the worst of the pain was gone after 3 days. Hang in there! You CAN do this! It will get better.
  8. Did my first 30 min walk today ... feel good. Going to try it again after dinner. I have sciatica pain but and it hurts to walk ... hoping over time I can walk it out.

  10. Waiting all done, tests finished, pictures and measurements taken ...Off to surgery 5:30 am this morning!!!! YEA!

  11. My doctor gave me a list of about 2 dozen different Protein shakes/powders to choose from. I also have a question. I am sitting here drinking my 8 oz shake and POP! One of those moments. I am only 4 days away from surgery. How do you fit an 8 oz shake 3 times a day into a 4 oz pouch? Plus get all those liquids in? Confusedl...
  12. You look awesome! Can really tell a huge difference in your pictures. Keep fighting the food fight! My surgery is Tuesday and getting a bit anxious/excited!
  13. It happens to me too. I'm on day 10 of liquid pre-op diet. Not sure what it is but hopes it goes away...

First day on pre op diet.

You can add small amounts of powdered crystal light; I also sometimes add a spoonful of cocoa to help. There are also sugar-free flavored syrups you can buy - DaVinci or Torani to help with the flavor.

    psych evaluation!?

I have suffered from depression since the age of 5, seen therapists/psych on and off my whole life and have been on anti-depressants since my 40's. Being depressed in and of itself will not necessarily fail you for surgery. They want to know if you are able to commit to this life changing surgery, that you are strong enough emotionally to stick to the diet, They want to make sure you don't have any psychotic thought processes including hallucinations and delusions. They also touch a bit on your family unit to see if you have support at home. Remember, they are doing all this for a good reason and it is all for our benefit. They want to make sure there are no roadblocks to impede you on your new journey to your new self. Like super said, you cannot get to be our age (i'm 60) without being depressed sometime in your life. As I suffer from severe chronic depressive disorder, I am hoping this diet will free me from most of the problems I have to deal with from day-to-day caused by being morbidly obese. I know it will not take it all away, as it is a medical issue, but hope losing the weight and becoming more mobile and getting into exercise and getting out of the house and starting to really live will lesson the symptoms (I don't even remember what it's like to not be depressed). That said, I am an eternal optimist and I have totally committed to this program. I have 6 days to surgery and feel like I am floating on a cloud! I am doing this for me .... whatever it takes!

Being a fat lady at a skinny gym...

I have talked to my sister about it and as soon as I get the go ahead, I am joining a gym. Yes, as always, I will feel like everyone is watching me wiggle and jiggle. But i've only got a certain amount of time to lose the most weight and I am just gonna take a deep breath, walk through the door and ignore everyone else. I WANT to be active; I WANT to live my life as a normal person. I've been doing a stationery bicycle but can't imagine me doing it out on the roads ... they would make me carry a "WIDE LOAD" sign! But one day I will. I am starting yoga in the evening to stretch out some of my muscles. Trying to get rid of so back pain so I can walk again. Lots of plans lol. I had surgery in 2007 and now my trachea is in the middle of my neck. I learned then that if people were going to judge me for something that was no fault of my own, then I certainly don't need them as friends. I learned to walk with my head held high and I learned (after a lifetime of looking at the ground) to look people in the eye. It won't be easy, but i've made the commitment "whatever it takes!" So, it's time to stand up and not let my thoughts of what others are thinking spoil my new journey. I am in this for the long haul; so one step at a time with head held high!! Best wishes and good luck everyone! Peggy

    Yoga---It's for US!

I have been looking around online at beginner yoga classes. I am morbidly obese, have back pain problems and thought this might be something I could do. I even read that some people use it to actually lose weight. I am surprisingly flexible. I am hoping over time that it will stretch some of those muscles in my back and help with the pain that keeps me from walking any distance. Once I get some of this weight off, I want to try Zumba! It looks like so much fun! Surgery in 8 days! YEA!
  21. I love working outside gardening and landscaping ... have done it for years. However, since I started the pre-op diet last Tuesday, I find I have very little energy for working outside. I seem to be a lot more sensitive to the heat and the energy I used to have just isn't there. I used to work outside the whole day; yet know i have to take breaks every two hours or so for at least an hour. Has anyone else had this problem? Does this continue all the way through post-op too? I live in Florida (born and raised) and working outside for me is so peaceful and relaxing. Now it's become a chore and i'm very disappointed in myself (feels like I am being lazy)...

    Polish and nails

I have had over 3 dozen surgeries and this is the first time i've been told not to wear polish. Most of the time the nurses love my nails and i've never had a problem getting my pulse through the bright colors. But, I have taken all my acrylic nails off for the surgery and will replace them with gels after surgery.

    Surgery pre op diet

I am on my 4th day on the pre-op liquid diet. I also have headaches. I don't have a problem with sleepiness but find I am really tired a lot of the time.

Does excercise help with excess skin?

I think a lot has to do with your ago too?

    New to this forum

Welcome! and congratulations on your decision. I too have health problems, including diabetes, that I am hoping will be corrected with this surgery (I chose gastric bypass). I have started my two week pre-op liquid diet and surgery is set for August 19th. This site is such a wonderful place for support, and you can find surgery buddies and the information found here is priceless. The more I read the less scared I become. Wish I had done this sooner, but I guess it wasn't the right time. This is my time now and I am optimistic and committed and will follow this new journey all the way to the end. Good luck on your own journey...
