  1. I had my final visit with my surgeon today and was scheduled for rny on Monday at 5am. Went in expecting to just confirm details because I had just met with the MD on Monday of this week and everything was a go. The surgeon started reviewing my test results with me from some tests I had done on my esophagus and a 24 hr study on ph levels in my stomach. He said that the results were inconsistent from previous findings and he can not operate with out further testing. He also said that I may not qualify now bc of my weight loss since my first visit (I've been on a 1000 calorie/day diet for 2 months and doing only protein shakes for last 12 days.). I understand that they want to cautious but I am devastated. I have done so much emotional and physical work to get to this spot and I feel like it was all for nothing. I am feeling like a bride left at the alter. From my first visit in July it was a done deal that rny was the best choice for me do to severe gerd as well as bmi of 41. Any help anyone can offer to help me get through this and put this all in prospective would be appreciated.
  2. My surgery is scheduled for October 6 and I'm starting to make a list of stuff to pack for the hospital. Does anyone have suggestions for anything they were glad they had or wished they had with them for the hospital stay?
  3. It depends of your surgeons plan. My surgeon plan was "full liquid" for 2 full weeks post op. Could do plain Greek (no sugar) but no creamy soups. Stick to what your NUT told you.
  4. Hi. I posted topic on Wednesday and I have been so sad/upset about this turn of events that I have not even been able to come back and look at replies. At my initial appointment my bmi was 40.4 and I qualified for surgery based on my weight not my issues with GERD although I had been referred for surgery from my GI dr based on my issues with gerd. Everything was a go and all of my visits with MD, nut, psych, and initial visit with surgeon were all very positive. Surgeon ordered extra testing to clarify gerd issue so he knew what to anticipate in terms of creating openings etc.. Test results came back showing conflicting results from all previous testing I have had done. New set of tests indicated I did not have gerd. When I met with surgeon for final consult (5 days before scheduled surgery) he said he had to cancel bc he needed more testing. He also said that in the absence of gerd I would not qualify. I had completed the pre-op diet and had put myself on a modified pre-op diet following my initial consult with MD so I had lost a total of 24 lbs which brought my bmi down to 36. Surgeon said that he was unsure that wls was necessary due to my success losing during time since first meeting. I was so upset leaving the office that I was unable to even ask the questions that I needed answers for. I have another apt scheduled with him this week and I am terrified that he is going to reject me for surgery even though I qualified based on my starting weight.

    October 2014 RNY-ers :)

My surgery in Oct 6th. Going in for some GI testing this week and then pre op testing on Friday. Meeting with NUT/psych on Friday as we'll and will begin pre-op liquid diet on the 19th. I have been making lots of dietary changes for the last month so my hope is that the pre-op diet is not going to be that bad or to far off of what I have been doing already. I was wondering about starting a group for October RNY as well so we could connect easily with other people in similar stages. Does anyone know how to create a group? I would love to join but not sure how to create one.

    Questions for surgeon

I have severe acid reflux/gerd and the sleeve was never on the table as an option. Often the sleeve makes the reflux worse or creates an acid reflux issue for those who have never had it. It seems pretty standard that if you have bad reflux to begin with that the sleeve is not a good option. Are you sure your surgeon knows about the extent of your acid reflux?

    protein bars/recipes

I like the think thin bars and the quest bars. I have been experimenting with both and I like the think thin with fiber the best (salted Carmel ) and the choc coconut.

    Time off work?

My surgeon suggested 4 weeks off. I work with developmentally disabled individuals and some have very aggressive behaviors. He said I will prob feel better and want to go back but my insides need to heal to ensure my safety. He also said that in his experience he has seen better success with people who have been able to take time off bc they have the time to fully devote to following the plan.

    Problems with password

I have been having difficulty with my password too. I have reset my password several times but each time I log in it says I have the wrong password.
  13. I have a missing pyloric valve which allows all of the acid and bile to move around all over the place. It has caused some damage and can cause more severe issues if I do not get it under control. When you have the rny and the reroute your intestines it makes it near impossible for the acid to reach my esophagus . I have been on a lot of medication to try and control it but it has not helped. I guess rny is one of the most successful ways to treat the issue that I have. And lucky me, I qualified bc my bmi was just about 40 I also have esophageal dismotility, which is separate from the pyloric issue but also causing problems. The esophagus is why I need to go in and have some more extensive testing done so that dr. Hutter knows exactly what to expect. I have always loved to exercise and I can't wait to start to feel better!
  14. Yes, Danvers on Wednesday, What a coincidence that we would both end up there. I am taking time off from work so I might be getting there just as the class starts but hopefully we can connect after the class. I won't have a ton of time bc I'll need to get back to work but maybe we. Can exchange contact info. When are you meeting with nut for pre-op diet? My apt is the 19th and I feel like that is the real start of this forever change. Do you know what they are going to be covering in the class? Also curious how/why you decided to do sleeve vs rny? I was referred from my GI dr and I did not have another option due to my GI issues but always interested to see why people choose one procedure over another. Looking forward to meeting you. Carey
  15. Angie413, how did your apt with dr Gee go? I am doing the nutrition classes this week, did extensive blood work, need pre-op testing, apts with nut and psych, and I have to have some testing done on my esophagus. After all of that I start pre-op diet on sept 19th (yikes!) and go back to meet with dr butsch/dr hutter one final time before surgery on the 6th. Dr hutter told me that it is important to loose as much weight as I can pre-op so I am trying hard to adopt many new habits now.
  16. I met with my surgeon today and he said he would like me out of work for four weeks. I have a physical job and often need to do physical restraints and he wants to make sure I am healed enough to go back. He also said that the people who take time off are the ones with the highest success rate. He said (and it makes sense to me) that this new lifestyle takes a big adjustment and you need to give yourself time to learn and adjust. I was hoping to only take two weeks but I'll see how everything is going then.
  17. Hi. I had another great experience at might today. I met with dr hutter and went over all options, complications, and risks. He really put me at ease. I am moving forward with the rny and surgery will be oct 6th. I have a ton of appointments between now and then but I am excited (and nervous). I will be starting the pre-op diet on sept 19th so it will be a long couple of weeks! I have Harvard pilgrim for insurance and the scheduler said they are one of the easiest to work with. She had approval same day she faxed request. Every insurance has different qualifiers but the standard is bmi over 40, and I just made the cutoff! It is great to connect with someone going through same experience. Update me and let me know how everything goes with dr gee. Are you going into Boston or Danvers location?
  18. I am also going through mgh. I have met with dr butsch, the psych (dr Gorman) and the nut. I am meeting my surgeon, Dr Huddersfield tomorrow and after speaking with the scheduler it looks like my surgery will be oct 6. I know a couple of out her friends who have been through the meh program and all spoke very highly of their experience. I have been very pleased so far but a am super nervous about tomorrow. Do you have a surgeon/date yet or just starting the process?
  19. I am scheduled for surgery in October. After reading your post I'm wondering what part of the surgery is making you regret your choice? Was it a complication? Are you unhappy about the new required lifestyle? Could you elaborate as I am in the decision making process now.
  20. I don't have an answer but I was just thinking the exact same thing this morning. How do you keep up with the rapid weight loss?

    October Buddies wanted

I was originally set for November but my apt with my surgeon got moved up to this Wednesday. The scheduler has me in for Oct 6th unless pre op testing reveals any unexpected difficulties. I am excited and I have been wanting an earlier date but now that I have it I am so nervous!
  22. I know every weight loss journey is different but I am curious what other people in my bmi range experienced for weight loss after RNY.

    Looking for November Buddies

I meet with my surgeon in September but I have already cleared the insurance obstacles. I do not have a confirmed date yet but the office said I would most likely have a November date. I can't wait!
