  1. You need to call your doctor or insurance to verify approval. Some doctors will schedule you prior to approval so they get you into the hospitals schedule. But this is not necessarily insurance approval. If you aren't approved they just cancel the surgical appointment.

My doctor scheduled after insurance was approved so this was never an issue. But I know people whose doctors did the scheduling first then went through the approval process.

Oftentimes a call directly to your insurer is the quickest way to get your current status.

  2. Best to check with your surgeon since this is one of those practices that varies widely. No right or wrong answer here. Just depends on your doctor's protocol.

I had one but many people don't. As others have said, you are out when it is inserted and it takes 2 seconds to remove. I really appreciated the convenience of being able to just rest in bed without having to deal with bladder issues. But that's me.

  3. As a 63 years old diabetic I was on a boatload of pills and 55 units of insulin for the 10 years prior to sleeve. Off all meds with an a1c of 5.6 by 6 months post op. I will be 2 years out in December and continue to maintain through diet and exercise only.

BTW my endocrinologist says I am not cured but remain a diabetic. He says I am "in remission" but will need to be careful since I will always be at risk of relapse.

Wow...5.6 A1C in 6 months...that's awesome! What was your A1C when you started? I heard that it's more of a remission than a cure, but it's better than having my sugars so high.

My A1C as a diabetic was 8+ with meds... could never seem to get it much below 7. The sleeve has been such a blessing. Not only am I off all diabetes medications but at 8 months post op I went for a follow up sleep study and was able to get off by CPAP machine, as well. Life is good!

  5. I'll be at Disney the 16th to the 21st! Isn't it just the best at the holidays? ????

So exciting!!! We actually have really never been there/stayed there. I went to a theme park one day when I was about 15 and my husband has never stepped foot on a Disney theme park. We are very excited!!! I'm glad to hear it's great at the holidays!!!

So many wonderful things to see ☺️. Be sure to get over to the Studios for the Osborne Family Lights... this is the last year they will be at Disney ???? They are absolutely beyond spectacular!

If being at Disney doesn't put you in the holiday spirit you have to be a real Scrooge LOL

  6. Call the hospital. Every one I have been in requires you to sign a form... among the bezillions you sign on admission... that gives the hospital the right to file appeals on your behalf if the insurance denies the claim.

Since they covered your surgery, this just has to be a mistake... maybe some paperwork they need or a clerical error.

You definitely don't need the extra stress and drama! I'm so sorry to hear you have had complications and hope you will be feeling better and better. Call the folks at the hospital and you just try to relax and heal ????

  7. Can one just eat small amounts and take Vitamins... Follow all the same rules without actually getting surgery, and get similar results?

For sure. In fact, fat people are experts at this!

I lost over 100 lbs 3 times in my life... and gained it back. Because in the end the hunger will get you. No way could I live on that limited caloric intake long term... it might take time for it to return but the weight always came back. I'm 5'0" and 63 years old. The number of calories I need to maintain a healthy weight is really quite small. The sleeve takes the deprivation out of he equation.

I am 10 months out and the hunger has returned though not nearly as bad as pre-surgery. I am full on much less and provided I choose wisely I stay full longer.

Listen to BLERDgirl! She is a pro when it comes to really getting the maximum benefit from surgery. ???? You lose and maintain weight the same exact way post surgery as pre surgery: eat less, move more. But for me it is the surgery that makes this possible.

  8. Why is the word bash even being used? Jeeeeezus!

Bash is an exaggeration ???? I used it in what I assumed would be understood as playful and to reassure the OP who expressed some trepidation in posting what is a less than common viewpoint and being concerned with negative feedback.

It is possible to have a different opinion or experience and not engage in the kind of exaggerated negative response, i.e. bashing, that the OP fears. But her concern does speak to the fact that it happens on occasion. Goes with the territory of an anonymous message board.
