    Evolution of eating post op

I had 1 week liquids 2 weeks purées. Next was 2 weeks soft solids. At 6 weeks I'm now on regular foods and my nut wants me to work on getting in more roughage and dense Proteins. I'm fortunate I haven't had problems with any food yet. I focus on small bites, chewing well and making sure that all food is moist. This is particularly important as the Protein has gotten denser. chicken breast is much harder to get down if it is overcooked and dry!

Do you feel like a failure?

Someone posted on BP something that I'll always remember. Don't know who it was but it really made me think. Do type 2 diabetics feel guilty because they need insulin? Do people who need a bypass feel guilty because they need surgery? Clogged arteries and high sugars are the results of a lifetime of lousy eating and no exercise! Why don't they just go on a healthy diet and get up and move?! Shame on them! This could all have been prevented if they weren't so lazy and self indulgent! Why is it alright to accept that intervention is appropriate for some medical conditions but others should be made to feel like failures for needing help. I've taken insulin and no one ever insinuated that I should be ashamed. I don't take it anymore because I finally found the courage... yes, courage... to use WLS as a tool to help. BTW, I saw my endocrinologist last week and he was ecstatic. He said he never sees patients who are able to so completely turn around their medical condition and prognosis. He said he was impressed and really proud! Nope, not a failure at all .

Do you feel like a failure?

Absolutely not. After your surgery you will really understand how your sleeve is only a "tool"... it's not a fix and it's certainly not the easy way out. You will have to learn to eat all over again. If you use your "tool" wisely you will succeed. If you don't it won't to a thing for you. You can certainly "eat around it" and some people do. Whether it helps is all up to you. YOU will do the work. Failure? Nah!! That's something to be proud of ????

    Bread and Biscuits post op

I'm comfortable with people disagreeing with me as well. I shared my reality. Just to clarify here. No one said (I certainly didn't) it is my intention to eat or encourage anyone post WLS to eat "without concerns for carbs" "without worrying about carbs". The question was about having a piece of bread. I consider a piece of toast with an egg an indulgence not something I do constantly and certainly not because I have no concern about carb consumption. My tummy doesn't rebel and I don't do it often. Your "indulgence" for working hard may be different. Heck, you may be so disciplined that you never have and never will allow yourself an indulgence. At 62 my wild eating days are behind me. Late in the game, I've learned to appreciate my health. As a reformed diabetic I don't do chocolate but I can certainly understand how that might be the occasional indulgence for someone else. And I wouldn't automatically assume it meant their overall eating showed that they didn't worry about their carb consumption. ????

3 days out & doing great!

Isn't it fantastic! I also had no issues when I came home and haven't had problems with any food items as I've added them back. Best wishes for a continued smooth recovery ????

    December sleevers

Down 23 lbs from sleeve surgery 12/23 total loss of 36 lbs. Sailed through every stage and haven't had any problems with any food. I've been cleared to increase the "roughage" so yesterday I had a plum and a salad ???? Funny the things we miss lol

    Bread and Biscuits post op

Off topic a bit... like you I love peanut butter but not the fat or calories. Have you tried PB2? It's fabulous! I buy it through Amazon because it's so much cheaper but have seen it in the peanut butter section of my supermarket. All the flavor none of the fat and 45 calories for 2 tablespoons ???? it's delicious on apple slices.

    Bread and Biscuits post op

I was told that toasting draws the moisture out of the bread so it is less likely to swell in your tummy. I have only eaten it toasted and that hasn't caused any problems for me. Haven't eaten regular bread, rolls, etc so don't know about that from personal experience.

    Bread and Biscuits post op

I am 6 weeks post op and was cleared to have toast at 3 weeks. I do enjoy a piece with an egg a couple of times a week. I have had no problems with any food I have eaten including the toast. Don't eat bread since it can expand in the tum or so my nut told me. Hasn't slowed my weight loss thus far but if it would thats something I would adjust in the future if I felt it was necessary. I'm not in a race but a journey. I see people saying they allow themselves a piece of chocolate as their indulgence for all the hard work they are doing. That doesn't interest me lol. The egg and toast is my indulgence ????

Congratulations! Best wishes for speedy insurance approval. It shouldn't be long before you are looking to schedule your surgery ????
  14. I understand completely how you feel about doing the sleep study. My PCP thought I should have one several years ago but I didn't see how I could do it let alone learn to sleep with a CPAP machine and mask! Long story short my surgeon required it (not the insurance) so I did the study and was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. Had to do a second titration study and get set up with the machine. Used it successfully for several weeks before I was cleared for surgery. I've learned to love my CPAP. I sleep so well and feel so much better. It was actually blessing. Please google sleep apnea. It is a very dangerous disease and has potential complications as severe as diabetes. Believe me if I can do it you can too!????

When you say you have followed her directions "for the most part" what does that mean? If you don't think you lost weight, why is that? I suspect she is seeing whether you can be compliant post op. If you have trouble now the worst that happens is you don't lose weight. Post op that changes. If you aren't compliant you can do serious damage. It's good that you are having your psych appt since some of the issues that are typically focused on are whether you understand that WLS is only a tool and whether you have a good idea of what post op will require of you. I don't know that the nut can prevent your surgery but I can imagine the concern if you followed the diet "for the most part" only. Why is that? Your having body altering surgery and its for life. There's a lot at stake.

    sleep study

My surgeon also required a sleep study. Took awhile with scheduling, diagnosis of sleep apnea and treatment. Set my surgery back about a month and a half. Now that I've adapted to the CPAP, I sleep well and feel so much better ☺️ Good luck with your test!

    I don't want to eat!

Yup, poor little tummy has been sliced, diced and definitely not in the mood! I focused on Protein drinks, greek yogurt and Water. Didn't meet targets for awhile but just kept at it. Hang in there, it does get better ☺️
  18. I was just thinking how young you look! ???? You are an inspiration!
  19. No guarantees on any type of WLS. You can and will regain if you are not compliant post op. It is a tool which can help you lose weight and maintain the loss. That's it. You do the work. I chose the sleeve in consultation with my surgeon and endocrinologist both of whom expect good long term results with the least complications. In the end though, it will be up to me to make it work. To me that is actually the most daunting aspect of WLS. The surgery itself was only a small part of the process. It's what you do after that is critical. And it's for life.

Slow loser due to my age?

63 yo 6 weeks out and down 22 lbs from day of surgery plus 13 lbs lost on 2 week preop diet. So total of 35 lbs in 8 weeks. With 2 knee replacements exercise is slow so not a real factor. I am thrilled with my progress as is my surgeon. At my age I am prepared for slower weight loss. Not a problem. It isn't a race or a competition its a journey. My goal is improved health. I feel great and I've already stopped all diabetes meds and hope to lower the blood pressure meds next. I'm also hoping a slower loss will help with the saggy baggy skin though I'm realistic in my expectations ???? It took me many years to get to the point that I considered WLS. I realize that it will take me longer than many others but that's ok. For the first time in I can't tell you how long, I actually believe I will get there! ????

    Advice, help, PAIN!

Are you drinking milk based Protein shakes? Could it be the lactose? I have heard of people developing post-op sensitivity even if the didn't have any before. I agree a call to your surgeon is needed at this point. Hope you will be feeling better ????
  22. Remember that they love you but don't know what you do. You will make believers of them ???? Best wishes with your surgery! I look forward to seeing you over on the losers bench. Keep us updated! And happy birthday! ????

    Unexpected set back

Don't let any weight gain you see discourage you. It's the IV fluids and you will drop it when you are off those. Focus on doing what the doctors say... you will get through this! You are a WLS vet after all and we're made of tough stuff ???? I'm sending you (((( BIG HUGS )))) and healing thoughts ☺️
  25. My philosophy is simple. It isn't a race. It isn't a competition. It is a journey. If my doctor and nutritionist are pleased then so am I.
