  1. I am also a self-pay patient. I live Florida. I went doctor shopping in October.

Because of my age (31), medical history, and the fact that I am self-pay, I didn't need the entire litany of tests required by insurance.

    My surgeon's requirements for me:

    • blood test
    • EKG
    • chest x-ray
    • no official psych eval, per se, but I was definitely interviewed and questioned by the doctor as to why I wanted the surgery
    • one week of pre-op liquid diet (4 days full, 3 days clear)
    • standard post-op diet

Basically the only things I had to wait on were my test results and an open slot for surgery. The surgeon wanted to know that I was physically and mentally healthy for this operation. He could tell that I was completely sincere and had done a vast amount of research on VSG. I think the insurance people have to go through much, much more hassle to get it covered.

The blood test took about a week to get results on, EKG was immediate, and chest x-ray took 3 days. I could have had the surgery within three weeks of my first consultation.

I chose to wait because I'll be off for the month of December. I'll be having it a couple of days before Christmas.

    Good luck to you, OP!

What doctor did you use here in FL? I'm looking around for a dr.... getting the various self-self-pay prices.

  2. I am in the very same boat. I had asked the surgeon I want to use at the consult how many surgeries he's done and how many had complications that lead to death. My husband focused on that information only and now is convinced that I am going to die if I have this surgery (the number of surgeries was a little over 1500 and he's had two deaths....one was from issues that the person had prior to surgery and the other they don't know what happened... the surgery was perfect and she passed away her sleep the next night). My husband literally is my only person I have I can lean on for support. I NEED this surgery for my health. He doesn't seem to realize that if I don't have it my path will remain the same. ????

  3. I'm so glad someone else is having this struggle! My hubby thinks it's the easy way out and feels that I should just exercise. He thinks I don't eat now as it is and says I will be miserable after because I won't be able to have what I want or go out for dinners with friends. Um hellooooo? All of that got me to where I am now! This has been a struggle for well over half my life now. I'm fed up and ready for things to change!

  4. I'm sitting here now trying to create a list as well. My appointment is in 10 days. So far all I have is:

how long is the procedure. complications during and after.

    healing time.

if my smoking is an issue.

    His mortality rate.

How long will I be in hospital.

What do post op appt consist of.

Do I really have to do 6 months of evaluation.

That's all I have as of now. Hoping to see others replies in case I'm missing something important.

Not sure if your name reflects the year of your marriage. You may want to ask about pregnancy after your surgery. I have no intention of any more kids. 3 teenage boys are plenty for me lol.

No kids for me! I ended up having to have a hysterectomy five years ago for cervical cancer, so it's just me, the hubby and fur babies!

  5. Hi all! I have my consultation visit with the VSG surgeon I'd like to use in a couple of weeks and I'm trying to compile a list of questions to ask him. Outside of the number of surgeries and the number of patients with complications, what other questions should I be asking? I know there are plenty but when it comes down to me remembering to write them down when I think of them... well... oooh look a shiny thing! ????

  6. Tampa here, I am self pay and looking for local surgeons. I found one in Orlando area and another on Boca Raton both for $10,500 but would really like to find that price in Tampa. Does anyone have ideas? I'm not interested in Mexico.

I went for an seminar with Dr Dietrick. He's in the Tampa area. The self pay price for a sleeve is $14,600.

  7. Hi ya'll! I've been lurking for a while around here. While I haven't had surgery yet (I'm still in the research phase of my journey) I had a question for everyone. I make wedding cakes... And I feel like once I have surgery I may have to cut that out of my life... As a form of self control. Has anyone struggled with their food profession after surgery and what did you do to overcome it? I really don't want to give up doing it. I love it. Any advice is appreciated!
