Do a search on BP for threads about regaining the weight after surgery. At 7 months out, those are the people whose posts I take to heart along with the responses they receive.
I don't need to learn the hard way! Protein first, veg then fruit. Carbs are not my friend.

    @@CowgirlJane
I have been assuring all my concerned friends that my current foray into the underweight category is temporary. From what I have observed, very few people have that problem when they are over two years out. That's why I don't want to overreact. My sister (who had RNY) purposely gained when she was told she was too thin, and ended up regaining a significant amount of weight that she is really struggling to lose.

IcanMakeit got a reaction from tfarr in How many ounces of meat can you eat at 1 year post op?
Hmm. I don't really know because I keep my meat/fish servings at 3-4 ozs. I could probably fit a bit more, but I like my vegetables too much. I'd much rather have veggies than more meat.
The problem with the way I'm doing things is that I'm still (at just over one year out from surgery) relying on Protein shakes/bars to make my quota every day. I should try eating a bit more dense Protein at a sitting and see how I feel.

IcanMakeit got a reaction from VDB in At what point did you make goal?
I reached my surgeon's goal weight at 7 months, and my personal goal at just over 8 months. I now, at 14 months, have finally (I believe) stabilized at 18 pounds below my personal goal.
The rate of weight loss is highly individual. You can't really make projections based on others' experiences. For instance, my 7 months to surgeon's goal was aided by the fact that I lost 42 pounds before getting WLS.

IcanMakeit got a reaction from ProudGrammy in Never hungry 15 months post WLS - am I the exception?
My hunger never really went away although the intensity of it changed. In the beginning, my stomach was delicate and even when hungry, I ate sparingly and carefully. Now at 14 months, I get hungry about every 2 to 3 hours, depending on how dense the Protein in my previous meal. So far, my capacity continues to be greatly reduced and my hunger is more manageable than before.

While this happens to me all the time, and if you notice there are so many people who go from fat or big or whatever euphemism we use, to becoming personal trainers etc. ( to me it's just wrong, but that i my sole opinion) but i do catch myself saying things in my head and not out loud etc, when i see a really big young person and thinking, "please , please. dont go through life the way I did, Please start fixing things NOW before you get to be in your mid-forties and have all these health issues and miss out on so much of life."
It is a hard thing to get over, and I'll never tell anyone they have to lose, or should try this or that, unless they know me and ask specifically about the surgery, and then ill keep it confined to the surgery.
But this is the reason I won't even watch my 600-pound life, I wind up yelling at the TV when I see them cheat or when families don't help the people. It's just a natural reaction to want to reach out and teach someone about the mistakes that I have made. But I know it would hurt too much as it would've hurt me when I was fat as well.

IcanMakeit reacted to Bufflehead in 3 weeks out and struggling - need advice
Use the search function here and look for the phrase "three week stall" -- you will find that this is something virtually everyone goes through about 3 weeks out. You are not doing anything wrong. Your body is taking some time to rest and recuperate after a drastic shock. The scale will start going down again, I promise you. Don't expect your weight loss to be a linear plunge down -- most people, as they go through weight loss, find that their weight loss graphs look like crazy stair steps designed by a drunk. Our bodies are not calculators, and they don't always behave with mathematical precision. It can be frustrating, but don't let it stress you out. Maybe stay off the scale for a while if it is making you crazy. But I promise you, stay on plan, this is a temporary blip.
Also, promise yourself to come back here in a few months and answer one of these sorts of posts. I am not kidding when I say there is a post every.single.day by someone who is freaking out because somewhere between two and four weeks out from surgery, their weight loss has "stopped" even though they aren't doing anything wrong. Maybe even go make some pre-emptive, informative posts on the pre-op forum so that not so many people are unaware of this phenomenon!

IcanMakeit got a reaction from blashlee in I want Thai food
@blahslee I agree that not all Thai food is sweet. I think so many Thai restaurants over-sweeten food because most Americans like it that way. (For me, they could leave out all the sugar and double the spices.)
I was whining because my favorite Thai restaurant is gone and I miss it. But you all have reminded me that I have two hands. I should make my own, just the way I like it.
Next weekend, the wok comes out.

I know what you mean. Can't speak for you, but for me, this hard look in the mirror is not too attractive, and similar to you, get lots of muscle building exercise, but now going on 80# down in three months, looking pretty droopy. This sounds really strange, but I expected to see the in-shape, smooth skin (no droopys and no stretch marks) 25 year old farm boy emerge even though I am 64 and made decisions that meant that I was significantly overweight from 35 on. The reality is that I got up to 450 at one point, and put my health at high risk, and as a result, my skin got very misshapen and stretched out. Now, like you, moving around great, have much better endurance, have gotten cured of five major health issues due to surgery, but am STILL looking for that good looking farm kid. I am having to adjust to a very different "Me" ..... and to reframe my experience into being so glad that I am better, and this is me with droops and sags, and that is ok...

IcanMakeit reacted to Mandyctr in Boyfriend's mom doubts my potential success.
She is judging you as a stereotypical obese person. A lot of people will. It's pretty gross. My husbands mother did that to new when he and I first got serious. She even suggested he break it off with me because she thought I'd be a lazy wife and mother. And this woman is stubborn too (this was 7 years ago, I've only been sleeved just under 3mos). When he told me that (he was disgusted with his mother) I made a really great decision. I decided her judgmental attitude was her problem and not mine. I love myself and my (now) husband love me so no one else really matters. I let it go and didn't hold it against her. And guess what.............she LOVES me now (even before my surgery, she could have cared less about that). We are really close, she brags about me as a wife and mother and tells her daughters to call me for life and parenting advice. My husband and sisters in law have said I'm the only thing on the planet she's ever changed her mind about. It's not because I'm amazing or anything, it's because she got to know me and realized how being overweight was a stupid thing to judge over. I'm glad I didn't hold it against her too because we've had a fun relationship we would have missed out on. And even if your story doesn't turn out as well, you still have a choice in whether or not you let this get to you. Free yourself of her judgement because you can't control her, just you. Good luck.

    Stop caring.
I know that sounds flip, but in the grand scheme of things, how does HER opinion of your decision and your weight loss journey really affect you unless you allow it to?
She might hurt your feelings, but she won't change your progress unless you allow her to. I try to cut negativity out of my life -- sounds like I'd not be too anxious to know her, personally.

I eat tacos. Just without the shell. You learn to eat in a more WLS friendly way. In other words, cutting out or extremely limiting carbs from bread, Pasta, rice etc.., leaner meats, less sugars, less processed foods etc....
In my honest opinion, I think it's pie in the sky thinking when people say they will eat whatever they want, just in smaller portions. It will work for a short time in the honeymoon period while you're losing and even into maintenence, but it won't last. There will be regain of weight if you don't cement healthy eating habits early on. And that's a fact.

IcanMakeit got a reaction from Alex Brecher in Goal?
My surgeon set my goal at 135 lbs. I'm 5' 3" and my starting weight was 244. I reached that initial goal weight in 7 months but knew I needed to lose more to really feel healthy. My own private goal weight was 125 lbs. That was my college weight, and I remembered feeling pretty strong and fit at that weight. Well I blew past 125 only about six weeks after reaching my surgeon's goal. Now, six months later, I'm down to 107 lbs. I know that sounds scary low, but I actually still have visible fat (concentrated on my abdomen) and don't believe I need any more. I just need to build some muscle so that I won't look scrawny. I'm hoping to maintain at around 112-115 lbs.
Let me second the comment about not expecting to look like you used to once you reach your goal weight. The older you are and the longer you were obese, the less likely you will snap back to your youthful appearance. I look much less fit at 107 lbs (and age 61) than I did at 125 pounds in college.
