    Pre-Op Diet Support

Anyone else having trouble getting enough calories while staying below 50 carbs on the liquid diet? I got my target Protein today (70!) but am low on calories while having gone over on carbs. Frustrating. I'll have to plan better for tomorrow.

    June 17th

At Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio. I live about two and a half hours from San Antonio, so I'll go up the day before and stay overnight at a hotel. My husband will take off of work and come up for the day of the surgery but also my Mom is flying in the day before and staying for a week to help take care of me. She's a former RN, so I'm very thankful she can come. Where is your surgery taking place?

    Pre-Op Diet Support

That sounds good but no fruits or veggies on my pre-op diet, so plain broth it is! Today is the first day and so far, so good. I had a wave of nausea this afternoon but it passed once I drank some very cold, skim milk. Can't complain about that!

    June 17th

Because my pre-op diet is two weeks, I start tomorrow. How about the rest of you with a June 17 date? I also started a June 2014 Pre-op Diet Support thread for everyone.

    Judgemental People

I'm telling everyone but I have a little statement prepared that I stick too. I end it by asking if they have any questions. So far, so good. I am a confident person and I find being upfront puts me in control of the conversation. Of course, to tell or not is a very personal decision.

Spouse not on board with WLS

My husband didn't want me to have surgery at all because any surgery can be dangerous. I gave him a few weeks to adjust to the idea and then approached the idea again. The bottom line is that it is my body, my choice and I expect support. My husband has risen to the occasion and has educated himself. He's still worried but is also supportive. I'm thankful for that.

    Pre op liquid diet

I absolutely hated the first four brands of Protein powders I tried, no way I could have had four a day! Try different brands.

    clothes

My sweet husband insisted I buy some clothes for the fall (I'm a newly certified teacher) at a store I like that was having a big sale. So, I bought several tops two sizes smaller than I am now. It felt like a vote of confidence for myself/my surgery. Now to start weeding out the clothes I do have!

    In need of some advice

I think there is nothing wrong with closing down the non-helpful parts if the conversation. You can tell your daughter you've heard her opinion that you are taking the easy way out and so on. But you are the adult and you've made your decision. Tell her you're open to talking if she needs it but you're no longer open to repeated criticisms.

    Best Protein Powder

I'm frustrated to find that in trying out the various Protein powders, I'm not tolerating artificial sweeteners very well. In addition to that, I don't do well with gluten. So, I was excited to find a recommendation here for Raw Protein, which is gluten-free and sweetened with Stevia. I'm going to pick some up at our local health food store and give it a try. I also sent for a few sample packs of About Time, http://tryabouttime.com/shop/trial-pack/ Best of luck to us all!
  15. My goal has been to not gain additional weight as I go through this process. I walk, I eat well, but I'm not pushing myself to the gym or dieting. I"m sure I'll lose weight during the two week pre-op liquid diet but other than that, I'm just trying to maintain an even keel. I think it's a good strategy for me.

    Unsupportive Family Member Rant.

You are absolutely correct! Love yourself and demand the same from those you allow into your heart.

    Unsupportive Family Member Rant.

Are you in therapy? I have found therapy to be incredibly helpful over the years in dealing with my own mother. I'm restarting therapy next week just to have some extra support pre and post-op, so that might be another reason to start therapy. I'm a mother myself, my son is 22 years old. Here's my role as the mother of an adult child; be supportive when asked and mind my own business otherwise. It sounds easy but it's tough! I'm his mother, I think I know best! Making the transition from parenting a child to parenting an adult is tough and there is precious little guidance out there. It sounds like your mother needs a lot of work on boundaries and if she's not going to do that work, then you need to do the work to put up and maintain those healthy boundaries. You deserve support. And you deserve for people who can't be supportive to mind their own business! Best of luck to you.

    a little depressed

I'm going back into counseling to prep for my surgery and to get a little extra support both pre and post-op. Are you seeing a therapist? The time to start to deal with your family dynamics is now. You deserve the support and you'll do better after your surgery as well. Best of luck to you.

    Depression and Surgery

The one and only concern my WLS doctor expressed was that one of my anti-depressants was extended release and I could not crush it for post-op. So, I talked to my psychiatrist and we came up with a new plan. In fact, my WLS doc seemed happy that I was already in therapy and had a good relationship with a psychiatrist.

    Therapist?

I've started working with a therapist pre-op and plan on continuing to see her for as long as I feel it nessicary. You deserve the support, go for it!

    Sleeve, Band or Nothing

First, congratulations on your weight loss thus far! That is quite an accomplishment. For me, part of the reason I am getting the sleeve is to stop the yo-yo dieting. I feel like a need a tool to help me maintain my weight loss (once it happens) as much as I do to loose the weight in the first place. You know yourself best. Trust your heart and head. Try to tune out other people and listen to your own mind. Best of luck to you.
  23. I think becoming "fat positive" and learning to love yourself "as is" actually sets us up for success with WLS. We're not going into this thinking that being fat is the root of all our problems or believing we'll just automatically love ourselves when we get down to a certain weight. I do believe in health at any size, I just know that my genetic road map does not bode well for continued good health at my current weight. So, June 17th I'm having WLS but I'm going to incorporate all the self-love and self-care I've learned as an obese woman into my journey. At 44, it's scary to kind of "start over" but here I go!
  24. On a silly note, I am also going to miss my boobs and booty! The comment that you can buy back your curves has me laughing! On a serious note, I'm pre-op, so I can't speak for how it will be after the surgery but I imagine I'm going to miss being a confident, strong, fat woman. It's taken me years and years to get to self-acceptance and certainly loving yourself when you're fat is a fairly radical thing to do in this sociey and I like being radical! But I love my life so much that I want it to last as long as possible and so here I am. Will I miss being obese? No. But would I trade in the lessons in compassion, self-acceptance and acceptance of others that I've learned along the way? No. I have plenty of thin family and friends who learned those lessons in other ways but this was my path and I'll always be grateful for it.
