    The Maintenance Thread

I wish I could consume more calories with how much I exercise. First two years, I maintained with little effort around 1500/1800 calories. Third year, things changed. The calories that once worked I had to dial back. The scale does not go back down when I increase calories. I wonder how people maintain with ease (not logging and eating freely) I will always have to be mindful of eating healthy without being obsessive. It’s my personal maintaining battle. Is there anyone afraid to post about their diet? I’m afraid of misleading or derailing someone’s progress.
  2. My surgeons plan - Walking right after surgery to help the healing process. Then released to do more after a month. (They would like to see patients walking for an hour 4/5 days a week) Here is my problem with waiting for six months (only my opinion) Exercise with bariatric diet complimented my weight loss. I got to goal in six months. Would I have lost at this rate if I waited? IDK

Take what is useful on this site and ignore/block the rest. I’m not always going to be a light touch when I’m concerned about someone’s health issues. Take it or leave it. My tough love comes from a place of caring.

You posted “Yesterday I ate straight JUNK knowing I would get sick but it was a lot of calories and I felt desperate in the moment to "stop losing". I did get sick, Not shocking” “1350 (give or take). Which is comical since I eat about 600-700 cals tops (and obviously a lot less today). Also cleared to go back to the gym in January post-plastics so that'll add to the massive calorie deficit. Buhhhh. I’m on that path to gaunt.” I’m glad you checked into this thread. All of us had to increase calories, fats and carbs with tight surgery restriction. We are proof it can be done. Tough love, If you honestly want to stop losing weight, STOP eating in weight loss mode. You know what you need to do. Graze all day to up your calories. Your restriction will be less over time. It will get easier. Add low glycemic carbs and healthy fats. (Don’t eat junk food to get calories in) Are you still working on becoming a trainer? What would you tell a client that was going back to the gym to work out on 600/700 calories? If you want different results make better choices.

Hey AZ Glad you found cooked cereal doesn’t cause dumping. What is working for you to fuel as an athlete? I still do a training tapper, seven day carb load and only liquid carbs race day. Have you tried unflavored cytocarb added to your water/hydration vest? can’t wait to hear about your 50 miler. You are a bad ass!

    NSV shout outs

Resurrecting this NSV thread. I’m grateful for moments when my inner obese woman kicks a fit person’s butt. Yesterday, I ran the same track with 22 army recruits. Drill sergeants yelling out times as they passed. (2 mile run requirement) The recruits went on to complete the rest of their testing (push up’s sit ups etc.). I continued to run. Half our later, sergeant’s and recruits came back to run the track after testing. This former obese woman outran them.

    Daily Menus for Maintenance

For an hour run. I can eat a banana 30 minutes before or run fasted. Depends on the day. Bagels could be the cause of my low blood sugar. *laughing* It was the only carb in the house. This is not a normal day of food for me. Anything over a 10K, I carb load for a few days before. Mainly sweet potatoes. (only carb that doesn’t bloat me /or drops my blood sugars.) Race day I run fasted/no food. I use the glycogen stores of my carb load to fuel my race. I use powdered carbs added to my water/hydration vest. Its been trial and error to find what works with my stomach.

    Those last 14 lbs....

115 pounds lost is phenomenal. How did you do it? Did you have to adopt a different strategy for the last few pound The last pounds can be painfully slow. We have less body fat to burn. No different diet or strategy . Reaching a lower BMI was not important to me. Its just where I ended up. I wish there was less emphasis on BMI. The goal to me is healthy. You said “The final pounds of weight loss are difficult and - because of the type severe restriction to get there - are not often sustainable” I agree that severe restriction is not sustainable. I did not use severe restriction to get to my BMI. I used bariatic basics and the calories/macros that kept my body in weight loss mode. Many do Bariatric basics, Keto, intermittent fasting, whole 30. Vegan paleo Etc. These are weight loss phase diets. You said "Ketogenic diets are not really recommended long-term for bariatric patients" Maintenance phase diet is a totally different long-term food plan.(ask your office for your plan) My instructions add calories, carbs, and fats to slow/stop weight loss. It’s been sustainable for me at five years out. You said " There's a risk that if I go back to a diet with 'forbidden foods', I may start thinking about it too much again (which - for me - would be counter-productive). You may want to work with a counselor to address this issue. Restricting and thinking about food too much is counter productive. I hope you find your own balance with all this. None of this is easy, right?

    Questions?

I apologize to the original poster this is off topic. Sorry you are having struggles; you are right everyone is different. Your calorie range seems normal, the majority of us are low calories at 3 weeks out. Weight loss does not happen overnight. Give your body time to heal.

    I don't know what I am doing!

It’s normal to feel hunger in the first stages. Let your body heal from surgery. Managing hunger will get better as you progress out to real food. Follow your food phase instructions. You can always call your team to get clarification and ask if you can bump phases.
  16. Welcome back You are not alone in having a gain year’s out. Working weight back down can be done. Some of us change up diet plans – Whole 30, paleo, intermittent fasting, vegan etc. Others do pouch reset. It does not shrink your pouch, it may help to feel restriction more and get back into healthy habits. Whatever plan you choose -Go back to basics: Log your food in an app (myfitnesspal) – stay within your weight loss calories and macros, exercise/activity and hydrate. Get temptation out to the house and go shopping for foods on your plan Years out most of us have extra sleeve space. With all foods allowed on your plan…Eat dense protein sources and as much veggies as you want until full. Veggies will keep your calories low. The bulk and fiber will help you feel more satiated. Keep healthy items on hand for sweet and salty cravings Adding extra carbs and real sugar causes you to crave them more. Detox off them. It will help with hunger. Getting your head back in the game can be a struggle. Here is a link to doing the head work. We have a monthly weight loss challenge/motivation/accountability thread on this site. Link below.

    carbonated drinks?

I was a soda junky pre surgery. I was surprised that I didn’t crave it after surgery. I waited until my first year (less surgery restriction) to try it. I felt bloated after.

    Desert substitutes

Nutrition can still taste good and be long term sustainable. Decide what school of thought works best for you. (strict or moderate) I was on the stricter side in weight loss phase. If I denied cravings, I just wanted them more. I found healthy options for sweet and salty. Many great bariatric recipes for deserts. I read food facts labels on products. I log recipes in MFP. If things fit in my calories/macros for the day, I lose consistently.
