  1. For the past month I have been addicted to pickled jalepenos and Frank's Red hot sauce. I put them on everything...literally. I probably ate them 1-2x a year pre-surgery so this is pretty funny to my DH. I don't have any issues after I eat them. That being said I am on a prescription for stomach acid so I likely don't suffer because of that. Everyone's so different with how their stomachs react though so try little bits at a time and test out how your sleeve reacts.

I accidently ate raw tomatoes last week (salsa...I thought it was picante but it was fresh) and I was literally bent over horizontal until the Gas-X kicked in. That was horrible.

  2. I'm 4 months out and at first I definitely could only sip, sip, sip and it drove me nuts. Can't tell you how many times I took a big chug of Water out of habit, caught myself and had to either spit it out or try and swallow little bits at a time. Worst feeling ever after surgery if you take too big of a drink...ugh! It's like there's a rock stuck in your mid chest. It was a really hard habit to break for me. Now I can take pretty big drinks, no gulping, but definitely bigger drinks.< /p>

  3. I had my surgery Thursday evening in TJ and flew home to Canada on Sunday afternoon. Total air/airport travel time was like 8 hours plus another 1-1/2 hour drive from the airport the my home town. I was totally fine the entire day, no pain, no pain meds, just tired but other than that it was fine. Honestly the worst thing for me was that I had a very bad stomach so couldn't drink anything all day because I was petrified I'd have an accident on the plane....that was painful having to only take a tiny sip to wet my mouth all day! lol!

I returned to work full time on Tuesday morning. I healed really fast and barely had any issues whatsoever (super lucky) and so transitioning back to work was easy. I brought a heating pad with me to work and used it for an hour or so for the first 2 days if I got 'tender' but that was it. No one even questioned it, if anyone asked I just said I had an upset stomach.

  4. When I was still in the hospital post op I remember looking over at my left hand where the IV was and crapping my pants! My hand and wrist were HUGE, like HUUUUUUUUUUUGE! lol! It looked like it was going to blow up. Vein collapsed so the IV was draining under my skin. They removed and put on other hand but it took a few days to completely go back down.

  5. I'm 4 months out and it takes some getting used to. I don't get hunger pains and/or the signals of 'hunger' like I did pre-op but I have learned to listen to my body now. First I always try and eat on a schedule (3 meals/day plus 1 small morning snack) but on days when I get too busy and forget and/or I am expending a lot more energy it will catch up to me. Typically I will catch myself getting super irritated, catch myself yawning a lot (even though I'm not tired) or I just don't feel right (woozy, grumpy etc) and I KNOW I need to eat something or in some cases drink some Water.

Just pay attention to your body, it will tell you what it wants/needs and don't skip meals :)

  6. My first closet gutting was a strange and very emotional experience for me (and I don't do emotional lol!). I have ALWAYS kept my 'fat clothes' when I lost weight in the past. Almost like a safety blanket I guess, I always knew I could fit back into something if I gained some back. But the 1st time gutting my closet after surgery I caught myself boxing things up to keep (per the norm) and realized.....what the hell am I doing?! I will NEVER fit these clothes again....never. That was a real eye opener and it was very unsettling to let go of my safety blankets and take all of the oversized clothes to donation.

Now I just keep an ongoing box of clothing and add to it as things get too big and I do a happy dance. Not quite so devastating anymore :)

  7. Hi Juba!

I didn't even THINK about the tax receipts!!!!

    Great !

Where in Canada? I'm in BC

do you mind me asking which surgeon you used?

    Thanks so much

    Deanna :)

I'm in BC as well, on. Vancouver Island :). I used Dr Ramos Kelly. He was great and my surgery went really well, 17 weeks out and I have had zero issues, tons of energy blah blah. Buuuut I think his staff really sucked and were very disorganized etc. once I got to. Mexico. Beforehand they were great. That being said it was a long weekend and the regular staff were all away/off so I got the new girl who was flakey and didn't really know what she was doing. Others on here had a great experience with his staff.

  8. Just had the gastric sleeve done this week at this hospital; my BMI was under 35, and yes, I also got hit with with a $430 bill for "extra" hospital charges. And just for the record: some of the "required paperwork" I had to sign at Nova was only available in Spanish, even though I asked if English forms were available... I was told there was no translated paperwork available.

My paperwork was in Spanish as well and I had no idea what the hell I was signing...

  9. Yup they totally nailed me an extra $350 and I was still trying to get a proper/clear answer as to WHY 3 weeks post op. I was finally told that they had to give me addt'l painkillers above and beyond. My response was that I had ZERO pain or discomfort after my surgery and in fact never took a single pill after leaving the hospital. Their answer was "well that's because you were given extra painkillers." ummmmmmmmmmmm WHAT?! I never once complained about pain or requested it be given to me. I was not a fan of Nova Hospital, it was pretty gross imo. Having seen another new hospital for my leak test I would've paid the extra money to stay there.

  10. Most important keep your receipts because you can write off the hospital and surgery on your Canadian income tax. Not sure how much you will actually see back but you will get a good chunk of it returned to you :)

I'm from BC and had surgery in Tijuana on April 17th. Just educate yourself of your surgeon options and remember that the cheapest isn't always the best way to go. I found so much information on this site and it really helped me - still does :)

  11. I haven't changed a thing about how I cook for my family. Most of the time I just eat a portion of what I make for them (i.e. I won't eat their side/carb but I will eat the Protein and small portion of veggies). If they are wanting to eat something that I can't alter and/or have anything to do with (i.e. homemade pizza night), I just insure I make myself something else.

We have never been a very processed food kind of family so the only change has been me eating what my sleeve can handle and/or what is a good choice for me.

Now eating out is a different story...I hate it now. It's so awkward and waitor's always think you don't like your food after you've altered the crap out of it to begin with when ordered. LOL!

  12. 10 wks as of yesterday. .down only 20 lbs as of this morning. .extremely slow and down hearted. Don't know if I'm not eating enough or my hypothyroidism causing me to lose this slow. Feeling defeated.

I am only 4 weeks out as of today, and I am down 27. But I have not lost any weight since 6/20. Only thing I can say from talking to others, is stick with your plan and it will come off. I know its hard to understand. I dont eat right now more than 400 calories, how can I not lose? But just think, you are down 20 lbs, that's alot and obviously something we couldnt do before. Keep up the good work!

Eating only 400 cal can have the opposite effect you would expect. Your body goes into starvation mode and holds onto everything for dear life. Guarantee if you up your calories you'll start losing again. I know it seems backwards but seriously I am losing more now than I was on liquid post op. And at only 400 cal are you hitting your Protein requirements??

  13. 1 cup of food?! That makes my sleeve hurt just thinking about trying to get that in, no way! I am 9 weeks out and there is no way I could get 1 cup in unless it's liquid or my Protein shake. food wise I can usually get 1/4-1/2 c depending how dense it is and I'm still only able to get 3oz (tops) of chicken.

I don't focus on quantities as much, I try to focus more on food quality of what I actually get in and that I'm hitting my Protein and Water intake requirements. I rarely hit my minimum calories (800-1000) but slowly have been able to work up to it.

  14. I can totally relate! Even during my liquid post op phase I was super excited about cooking and baking for my family. It seemed weird and I thought it would be a struggle but it just isn't at all. I'm quite enjoying trying new recipes and experimenting and have had zero inclination to eat any baking etc. most but not all of the food I cook for my family I am able to modify and/or eat parts of it myself. Not having any appetite and/or knowing that if I eat certain foods will make me sick is making it easier for sure.

It's funny because if I go out socially my friends/family will keep apologizing to me if they are eating foods I can't or won't eat....it drives me nuts! Haha. No matter how many times I tell them it doesn't bother to me or that I don't crave it etc they don't "get it". I think so many woman are used to "dieting" that automatically they assume I'm sitting there dying to eat the crap food....but I couldn't be more grossed out by it. A friend was eating Doritos around me last week and the smell was making me literally dry heave. It was pretty funny actually. I'll take crappy food aversion side effects any day! ;)

  15. I went to Mexico but Tijuana. It was an experience and their medical system/standards compared to BC we're interesting to say the least. But that being said I knew that going in and I made sure I researched my surgeon. My surgery went really well and I have had zero side effects. Just go in knowing it won't be the same as an AB hospital but if you chose a good reputable surgeon you'll be in good hands. You only spend 2 days in the hospital anyways. It's a very common surgery down there and a lot of ppl go down there for it.

  16. I'm about to book my surgery in Mexico but still going to the Red Deer info session, I've heard its a 2 year wait here in Alberta which makes me crazy! I am considering a surgery with Dr Joya in Puerto Vallarta, its $6500 including the hotel stay. I have to pay my own flight. Do I want to spend $6500...NO? Do I want to jump through a million hoops and still wait 2 years, NO! Does anyone have any experience with the bariatric sleeve in Mexico?

  17. ooooooooh it finds its way out trust me :D I was one of the lucky ones and only had the post surgery gas pains for maybe 2 days. I found that a heat pad on the area bugging me (I..e shoulder or stomach) helped a lot and to just keep moving around.

I used the Gas X strips more to help with stomach gas as I found once I started eating Soups etc right after surgery that everything gave me gas for the 1st week or 2. I doubt they work to release surgery gas.

But it does find its way out via the normal routes for sure and/or your body must absorb it.
