@@SwanRose, thank you for the post.  I am scheduled with Dr. Garcia on November 22nd.  Being self-pay, I could have scheduled it sooner, but with kids in high school, I planned it for the week-long holiday during Thanksgiving so I would not have to worry about arranging travel to/from football practice, school, etc.  It helps to allay my mother's fears (and my own) when I can point to another person's good experience!

One week out from surgery and just started full liquids. Doing well so far. Surgery went very smoothly and I'm down 10lbs.
I hope everyone is feeling okay.

@olsonjb You'll be fine. I cheated twice on my pre-op diet. I did 10 days on two shakes and one lean & green meal.
On day 2 I was so hungry I had a chunk of sourdough bread with butter - bread is my drug of choice! And on day 5 I had my one and only attack of cold feet, decided surgery was too drastic, I wasn't going to do it, and had a ham sandwich for lunch. My feet warmed up again later that day and I stuck to the diet after that.
You haven't done any harm. My surgery went without a hitch despite my cheats, so I'm sure yours will too.

Glad you are doing so well and had such a positive experience! How far did you have to travel when you returned home? I'm having my surgery with Ariel Ortiz on Sept. 1, but not returning home until September 5. I'm a little concerned about traveling post op. Did you run into any issues?
I'm really happy there are so many surgeons doing excellent work in Mexico. It really offers a great opportunity for those of us who have to self pay.

@@Bob2013 I agree about the kids needing some consequences for their actions.
Also - and meaning no offence to the OP - but I have to ask, since she "came home" to find her food eaten, who was supervizing these kids? If it was their father then shame on him for letting them run riot in the kitchen cabinets all day.

Im lucky, my kid is grown and out of the house and my wife's eating habits reflect my own (just slightly higher calorie count) so I usually dont have that issue. Except for the couple times she ate my last morning star black bean burger I was saving for my work lunchbag. She knew I wasnt happy.
But sounds to me like the OP needs to get some discipline going on the kids. All those Premier bars and shakes are some pretty expensive Snacks. A week in their room with no electronics seems appropriate.

I'm no expert, but this seems like a crazy idea to me. If you're eating the diet of a sleeved person and you're not yet sleeved OF COURSE you will be hungry.
I can see the sense of getting used to eating more slowly and not drinking while eating, but eating post-op portion sizes - why? If we could eat tiny portions we wouldn't be here. Surely a NUT worth his/her salt should realize this?
I'm very glad I'm going self-pay and don't have to put up with all this stuff.
    Good Luck!

I was sleeved by Dr. Garcia on 7/3/13 and could not be happier. He and his staff are wonderful!! You will be given a ton of literature to read and will forget half of what you are told by the time you return home, but the paperwork is pretty easy to follow. So much of it is common sense that it really is hard to screw up. The first couple of weeks are the hardest, but after that you get the hang of it, and the weight is falling off. I do not regret for one second going with Dr. Garcia, he has absolutely changed my life.

When my husband and I first married, I was at the store eyeing a beautiful sapphire ring. It was only about $400 and he told me no. I worked, he worked, we could easily afford it. I came home with a 5k diamond tennis Bracelet instead. He quickly learned that telling me no was counter productive.
You are a grown woman and you have been struggling with your weight for decades. This decision is not his to make. I'd sit him down, tell him this is what you ARE going to do, tell him you'd love his support, but if he can't give it to you! it's not going to change your mind. Period.
Hopefully he'll come around. This is not about him, it's about you.

i think its his responsibility to convince you that its in your best interest to not have the surgery versus you needing to convince him that you should. its your body, your health, your choice. so i would turn it around and tell him that this is your choice and if he thinks its not a healthy choice, he should research proof that remaining obese is less risk than having this surgery. if he can do that, you will reconsider. until that time, your mind is unchanged.

During my puree phase I stuck to Cream of Mushroom Soup and refried Beans mixed with pureed turkey hamburger. I tried to keep it simple. When I'm only eating a 1/4 cup of food per meal, I didn't want to go to a lot of trouble cooking.

I'm also having a few What-Am-I-Doing-? moments, thinking I'll never be able to eat this/drink that again. There's a quote from a UK TV show I saw years ago that helps me -
"You can't move forward without leaving something behind. It's a fact of life, there's nothing you can do about it."
So since I definitely want to move forward from where I am now - waddling, unfit, can't walk round the block without my back aching like hell - then there may be some things I will have to leave behind. The bottom line for me is that it's worth it.

I am so sorry, but your venting made me laugh..So many things that we all experienced and the buyers remorse shining through your complaints.
Hold on kid it is going to get better. I promise you. Life is going to start to hand you some pretty cool experiences called NSV. And then you will say I am so glad I did this.
Mean while it takes time to get used to all the changes and rules..of our new life style. But it will become very manageable for you as well as routine very soon.
Take the time to really enjoy exploring new foods that would be interesting to try. And then for sure you will have conversations about food.
The whole reason you had this surgery in the first place was because of your addiction to the chemical reaction in your brain and lack of self control while enjoying the chemical reaction in your brain. But if you learn to make good, nutritional choices and make them tasty. There will be lots to talk about and you will be helping your body as well.
I am never hungry either and have not been hungry all along...If i did not have Reactive Hypoglycemia I probably would not eat as often as I do and then I would be smaller then I am now......
Trust me girl it will all come together and you are going to be so proud of yourself!!!!!!!

I chose not to live my live out loud. I don't discuss my finances, and I don't ask people about theirs. I don't discuss how much my house or car cost and I would never ask another person the same. My mother told me if some one was ill, when they return to work never ask what was the illness. Just say I'm glad you're feeling better. On my job I'm amazed on a daily basis at some of the personal discussions I hear.
As for me...it's not a secret, it simply no one's business. Really, why does it have to be announced?

I guess I am just made of different kind of stuff.
I don't care! I am done! You want to tell me your horror stories(people do). Go ahead
You want me to give you my reasons - fine "it's the right decision for me" and more specificity you can kiss my ass
I told everyone. I do not invite you to share or opine upon my decision. Support only.
Thank you. The rest can kiss my smaller ass.
When it gets around to getting smaller.
Here is what I posted on Facebook : so we r clear
I received 100+ positive posts. And no negative opinions.
Many of you know and many do not. But today is my new birth date
For the last several months I've been working on a new lifestyle and a new diet. Today was the culmination point.
I had a gastric sleeve this morning.
There were numerous reasons That factored into this life altering decision. I am not going into them but know it was not done lightly
The sleeve is a weight loss surgery that provides you a new tool to lose weight.
    This is not a cure.
It involves removing a portion of your stomach
This decision wasn't taken likely but it was the decision I made and feeling it was the right decision for me
I expect to go home tomorrow. My asthma and blood pressure are in check and so no reason to stay longer.
Many people may not agree with this... But it's my decision and I am not asking for opinions just continued support as I enter this lifelong journey.
    Happy birthday to me.
My family has been great, especially my husband David who I could not have done this without.
I feel good. I was told what to expect and expected to be in agony today and it's not the case. The only pain I have is from the surprise hernia that was found and repaired.
Thank you all for your kinds words and keeping me in your thoughts

    I'm not "hiding" anything.
    No, I'm not embarrassed.
    No, it's not a "secret".
I *DID* do this on my own. Yes, I had surgery, but no one weighed and measured my food, tracked my intake, ran my miles, danced my Zumba, lifted my weights, swam my miles, or did any of the other work I had to do to lose 110+ pounds last year. My surgery was a tool, a really super awesome tool that I will be forever grateful for, but I lost the weight, no one did it for me.
Why have I not made my surgery public knowledge? Because it's none of anyone's business. I have so many more things about me that are *MUCH* more interesting than my surgery. I am a successful business owner with 300+ women on my team, I am a mom of two gifted teens who I am very proud of, I am a volunteer for a women's shelter, I am a martial arts training instructor, I have a pet hedgehog who is as cranky as they come, I can move both of my eyes independently of the other, I can sing songs in sign language, I hate getting dirty but I have a new love for doing mud runs, I am white Water certified in kayaking, I can do the splits in all three directions, I've been married to the same man for 20 years and haven't attempted murder yet, I have a wicked sense of humor and can insult you five ways to Sunday and you'll thank me for it without even realizing it.
I have no desire to explain (to people who really aren't truly interested) what a sleeve is, how it works, why they really don't know someone whose mother's best friend's cousin's neighbor's brother's wife's dentist died from this surgery/gained back all their weight/was malnourished/has seizures/never lost a pound/etc, nor do I care to explain my portion size, justify why I eat what I eat, answer the question "are you allowed to eat that" every time I put something in my mouth...
I don't talk about my pooping habits with the general public or my menstrual cycle, my gall bladder attack, why I used to pee when I sneezed, my IUD, my sore boobs during PMS, etc. I don't talk about the size of my hubby's package, how often we do the do, where we conceived our children, what we fight about when we fight, how much money I make, how much money he makes, my IQ, what brand of handbag I carry most often, or how much I spend on shoes annually, either.
    Any other questions?

Hi, I'm getting my sleeve in Tijuana on 4th August. Only two people know about it - my husband and my best friend in the UK who I emailed about it. Both are 100% supportive, and I think I'm fortunate that I don't I don't need to tell anyone else.
Feeling more excited than nervous - so far, anyway - and I'm making lots of plans for all the activities I'll be able to do later.

I'm an artist, and I went back to school shortly before surgery, so I was covered as far as things to do went. I find I can sketch much better now that I don't have food in my hands or residue on my fingers. Yay for no grease stains on my sketch pads!!
I also have craft projects standlng by if I'm not up for drawing. I crochet (we got a new kitten, so I made a bunch of nip-filled balls for him), and I learned to make paracord keychains and bracelets. And I spend a lot less in craft supplies than I used to spend on food, so I still come out ahead
But like others mentioned, going for walks or picking up the dumbbells (once you're cleared for it) are also good ways to keep the hands busy. I really didn't want to even think about food post-surgery, so it was fairly easy to distract myself. Not that I didn't get bouts of head hunger, but luckily, I was able to stay distracted and ignore it.
