    Here endeth the stall

Hey Jessica, Here's my blurb on that... Congratulations! You have reached The Dreaded Week-3 Stall. It's perfectly normal, and just about all of us have suffered through it. You're not crazy, and your doctor didn't screw up. In fact, you might not lose any weight for two weeks or more. But don't worry -- after that, the weight will start falling off if you stick to your program. If you're interested, here's a good article that explains why it happens and why we all have to go through it. Hang in there. Pretty soon it'll be in the rear-view mirror and you'll be dropping weight again like crazy! (Apologies to BP regulars who have seen this repeatedly, but it's a big deal to those who are going through it!)
  2. Attended a high school reunion for the fist time in many years and felt great! It was a 55th birthday party for our entire class. I drank iced tea all night while others chugged beer, and lost weight the next day. I love my sleeve!!!!!!! Here's a picture from the reunion...
  3. And THAT'S why we post 'em! Good luck on your journey! It's so worth it!!!

  11. It doesn't say "image modification" at the right, it says "image moderation" below the image.
  12. All of us who have heard (or felt) the F-word know that for some unfathomable reason, the last "acceptable" form of discrimination is against the overweight. How many times have you heard a radio talk show personality say something like, "I'll give that fat bastard a piece of my mind"? And how many TV shows and movies still make fun of the chubby character who is written to be a bumbling buffoon? Why do they still get away with it? Why doesn't the FCC come down on that subject just as hard as it does on the defamation of every other group? Because being overweight is a choice and not a condition? How about ignorance? Now THAT'S a choice! The prejudices are deeply ingrained and constantly reinforced by society and the media. We are weak, otherwise we'd be able to lose weight and keep it off through diet and exercise, right? Huh? Then why are diet products a multi-billion dollar industry? It's not that easy! Those of us who have made the WLS decision have come to recognize that fact, because we've all tried the old way -- over and over and over again. Some of us have started a new diet every stinkin' Monday morning for most of our lives! The point is that people who don't face this issue (and many who do) can't understand the constant battles we have faced in trying to get control of our bodies and minds. And this is the tool we are turning to as our best hope of turning our lives around permanently. So don't presume to tell me what I do, or do not need to do with my body until you've walked a thousand miles in my skin! And the next time someone tells you that you don't need weight loss surgery, gently tell them, "Fat Off".
  13. Here's my trick that doesn't require an app... I bought two 24-oz Tervis tumblers (and handles) at Bed, Bath & Beyond – one for home and one for work. I fill one with Crystal Light decaf iced tea about 45 minutes after Breakfast and sip on it all morning, finishing it 30 minutes or more before lunch. I fill it again about 45 minutes after lunch and sip on it all afternoon, making sure to finish at least 30 minutes before dinner. 45 minutes after dinner I fill one more and sip it throughout the evening. And voila – 72 ounces of fluid! Weekends are a little trickier, but I take one with me in the car while running errands or whatever. The same basic schedule applies. One between breakfast and lunch, one between lunch and dinner, and one after dinner. Once you get in the routine, it's easy to get all your Fluid in every day. Plus bonuses for coffee and hot tea. Good luck!

    Feeling so discouraged

I agree with the rest. Get a consultation from another heart doctor, and your primary as well. That doctor sounds uniformed. As for your other question, I'm nearly 4 months out from being sleeved, and have not had one single bout of diarrhea. The opposite effect is more likely, but can be managed with fiber pills. Furthermore, my diabetes, apnea, asthma, high cholesterol, and borderline blood pressure are all gone. Saw my endocrinologist after 3 months and my A1C was down to 6.4 without any shots or pills. He was really excited for me and joked, "Damn! Those bastards are going to run me out of business!" Does that help? Good luck!

    DISAPPOINTED & ANGRY

Glad to hear it! Ironically, I'm in a four-week-long stall myself. After losing 70 pounds in the first three months, I've lost 5 in the past month. Intellectually, I know what's going on; but emotionally, that scale is a real bastard!
  16. At 265, I wasn't that big too. So I was open and honest about my reasons. I had all the "fat-guy diseases": diabetes, apnea, asthma, high cholesterol, borderline high blood pressure, arthritis, body aches, exhaustion, feeling like poop all the time, miserable in my own skin.... Need any more reasons? Now I'm 3+ months after surgery. I still have arthritis, which is not necessarily weight related. Everything else is gone! Any questions? Good luck with your journey!

Congratulations! Sounds like you are in the midst, or possibly near the end of The Dreaded Week-3 Stall. It's perfectly normal, and just about all of us have suffered through it. But don't worry -- after that, the weight will start falling off if you stick to your program. Pretty soon it'll be in the rear-view mirror and you'll be dropping weight again like crazy! Here's an extra hint: If you're not already, I'd recommend logging your food and exercise with something like http://www.myfitnesspal.com/. It's easy, and will help you determine if you are getting enough Protein, liquid, etc. Don't worry about not getting enough calories. Most sleevers find that they are unable to get in more than 700-900 calories a day for many months after surgery. Good luck! (Apologies to BP regulars who have seen this repeatedly, but it's a big deal to those who are going through it!)

  19. You're welcome! Finding that article is what got me through my week-3 stall. Unfortunately, I've been in another big, bad stall during the first few weeks of my 3rd month out. So I rely on the wisdom gained from that article to realize that it's a normal part of the journey and I just need to muscle through it – and not make less-than-optimal choices because of it!

    Haters!

Yep, I'm down 74 pounds, which just happens to be 2/3 of the weight I want to lose. People are already telling me that I don't need to lose any more. HAH! Technically, I'm still obese for another 6 pounds! But I realize that they mean it as a compliment, so I take it that way and don't let it bug me. And regardless of how we feel individually about the BMI calculations, the fact is that they are the standard that the medical and insurance professions use to determine weight-related risk factors. So I have targeted a goal weight that puts me exactly one pound into the NORMAL range. My wife says, "I didn't marry a skinny guy", and I answer, "Too bad, cause your gonna end up with one!" So, family aside, I'm going to try not mentioning how much I have left to go. If somebody says, "You don't need to lose any more weight," I'll say, "Thanks for the compliment!" and leave it at that. We'll see how it goes....

    Week 2 post op question...

Two weeks out you may still have a little bit of swelling, which can make everything feel more constricted. My surgeon's advice to "eat until satisfied, not full". Sounds like you're doing that. When you get to solid foods, it's easier to measure because you can weight it. I can eat 4-5 oz of tuna salad or chicken salad, 4 oz of chicken, but only 3.5 of steak. Make sure you're getting in at least 64 oz of fluids, and if you're short on Protein, have another shake or a Greek yogurt. Calories aren't an issue because you won't get anywhere near 1,200 for a long time.

    I need help please!

I vote for Premier Protein from costco as well. 30 grams each morning to start off my day!
  25. Quote: This from the man who nagged me for YEARS about my weight. I think he is afraid I will leave him! Which is not the case at all! LOL You know... I think many of our spouses/partners make the, "You're gonna get skinny and leave me" comment. This is a big adjustment for them as well. And frankly, during our weight loss journey, by necessity we tend to be more self-focused. So part of our job is to reassure them that we love them and that's not gonna happen. (Assuming that's true, of course). My wife, who has no reason in the world to feel insecure, has said it in jest. I just keep telling her I love her. And by the way, now that I'm smaller, lighter, and more agile, our romantic life has improved as well! TMI–LOL!!!
