  1. So far the only people I have told are my mother (she's not happy, but she's not being negative about it either...just keeps sending me new diets to try), my husband, and my best friend. My sister, who I am very close with, is very anti-WLS so I'm not telling her until I come back. I also work for a small nonprofit, and I know I'm going to have to tell my coworkers SOMETHING, as there is no way for me to slip off for an hour, let alone two weeks, unnoticed. I mentioned to them many months ago that I was considering WLS, and the response was not positive. Throw Mexico in the mix and I anticipate someone may faint. I still haven't decided what I'm going to tell them yet.

Only my husband knew. I told people I was having hiatal hernia surgery (partly true, because the surgeon did fix it), and I did not say anything about Mexico. I'm 10 days post-op, and no one has called me on it. You would have the same incisions and post-op recovery with the hiatal hernia, so it may work as a cover story for you.

  2. I have heard amazing things about Dr Aceves as well as Dr Alvarez both have a $8000 price tag.. Im seriously considering dr Aceves after watching a youtube video by lessofsarah where they talk openly about their experience and the cleanliness of the hospital. Im hesitant of going to Tijuana even though it is much cheaper.

Dr A. Lopez did my sleeve on May 19th, and he also repaired my hiatal hernia. There were 4 others in my group that were sleeved that day, and the nurse told me he did a total of 9 sleeves that day (I unfortunately was number 9; didn't get to the OR until after 10PM). Other than having to wait the entire day, I am happy with my decision, Dr. Lopez, and the care I received. I keep in touch daily with the other 4 people I got to know who were sleeved the same day by the same doctor, and none of us have had any complications. I had no issues going to Tijuana, and may return to the same hospital next year for a breast lift with 2 other women in my group. I'm down 16 pounds and feeling great, belly is still a bit tender, but I'm getting my Protein and fluids in. Best of luck with your decision.

  3. I had great success with Nutrisystem, moderate success with Atkins, and limited success with Weight Watchers. No success with a plethora of diet pills and cleanses and other behavior modification programs. I don't have an issue taking the weight off - my issue is keeping it off. With menopause and a very underactive thyroid, I have to eat less than 1100 calories a day to maintain weight loss. I simply cannot do that on my own - I need the sleeve to help me with Portion Control. It's not what I eat that gets me, it's how much I eat. I can't think of any other tool to help me except WLS. No more excuses! Surgery is Monday in TJ with Dr. Lopez. I can't wait!

  4. Perhaps if your sister knows that you are going, with or without her, she might change her mind? I had a similar situation with my husband. He told me I was crazy to even think about going to Mexico, and couldn't I just "eat less and exercise more, like normal people do"? Once he realized I was going, with or without him, he said there was no way he would let me go through this alone. He still does not agree with my decision, but he is supporting my decision. I'm a lucky gal. (BTW, my surgery is Monday 19 May with Dr Lopez in TJ. I look forward to meeting anyone else having surgery next week and staying at the Marriott).

  5. I'm sure I'll get flamed here, but I'm not sure I wouldn't go on holiday in Mexico, so you can imagine how I feel about having surgery there. Just MHO. The crime rate is bad in some areas, due to the cartels.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion. What I don't understand is why you are even reading much less responding to this thread, which is in the "Surgery in Mexico" section, if you have no intention of going to MX for your surgery?

  6. Hello!!! I will be traveling alone to TJ. I live in San Diego so I don't have a long distance to travel for the trip home...I am hoping to talk to someone else who is scheduled around my time or has a recent experience with Dr. Lopez. I have done years of research and feel very comfortable with my choice of doctor, but any new info would be great!! Thanks!

My surgery is May 19th w/Dr Lopez. Maybe I will see you before I go; are you staying at the Marriott on the night of the 22nd?

  7. I am considering a gastric sleeve in Tijanna (thanks for the help choose a destination) with

Dr Lopez in May /June time frame.

Anyone have any experiences they would like to share?

Anyone having the procedure in the same time frame?

Would love to have a buddy!

I'm scheduled with Dr Lopez on 19 May. If you do a search on this board, you will find several others who have also had Dr Lopez and were pleased with the procedure and care received.

  9. I am scheduled for surgery in May, self-pay in Mexico. I don't plan on anyone but my husband knowing. I'm 51 years old, 5'1" with a large frame, and weigh 187 lbs. I am sure people would judge me because they think I'm not overweight enough to offset the risks of surgery. Well, I'm obese, and without surgical intervention that will never change. I'm pre-hypertensive and have been hypothyroid for 14 years, just went through menopause which added more weight. Yes, I should be able to lose the weight with diet and exercise. I probably could, but I know from experience I can't KEEP it off. I see no reason why I shouldn't prevent future medical problems by using this tool to help me. But, even my husband says "Oh if you would just get out and walk a few miles a day you'd be fine". No one but an obese person understands the unhappiness, frustration, and even shame of being obese. I'm tired of being obese, and tired of trying to justify my weight to myself and others. I refuse to even discuss this surgery with friends or family. Sorry for the rant, but I think we should be able keep our surgery private for as long as we want.

  10. Congrats! Is your procedure in the US or are you going to Mexico?

I've been trying different things that I'll be able to have on the liquid part of the pre-op and post-op diet, and so far the best thing I've found is Herb-Ox broth in the individual packets. It's really good! I bought it in bulk from Walmart.com and it's economical. I also like the Syntrax Fuzzy Naval Protein drinks in the individual packets - I love the taste and convenience. 100 calories, and 23 grams of whey Protein from isolate. The 800 cal pre-op diet will be the toughest part for me too.

Lenae in ND - surgery date 19 May, self-pay in Mexico

Hi everyone. I am having my surgery on May 13th, and would love to wait it out with you all. I'm super excited but very nervous as well. I start my 2 week 800 calorie(ugh!) pre op diet on April 29. That's gonna be tough.
