  1. Surgery week folks! Today our 27s go through surgery and we will keep this thread going for a week while we all get sleeved!

It's FINALLY arrived, I don't know about you, but I am excited, anxious, nervous and did I say excited? I am SOOO over trying to figure out the next diet to do that will rebound in a few months. At last I have a tool that will WORK forever!

Get your lip balm and Gas-x strips ready and I heard a heating pad can be awesome for stubborn gasses in your back and shoulders the first few days, can't hurt to take it with you! If you are in a big busy hospital and might have to share a room, bring ear plugs and an eye mask... you may not need it but better to have it if you do. Don't forget to get up walking as soon as possible, it helps the gas go away. Excited to see how everyone does!

  2. My Aunt had gastric bypass over 10 years ago. She did pretty good, but never got below a 16, and every time she ate she got hiccups for quite awhile. I had no desire for that.

A client of mine had bypass a few years ago and she was sick for 6 months. Another reason I didn't want bypass.

Then I had a friend who I checked in on that had VSG. She was doing amazing, loved it! I started doing more research and I loved it. I love that there isn't any rerouting of organs or adding things that could come off or mess up. Just a smaller stomach so my 1 main meal a day habit would be fixed! I would have loved to have surgery a few months ago, but I needed the 5 days off and that didn't happen until this week. Can't wait!

  3. Welcome to the group Laurie! We will start a new thread over in the post op board probably Tuesday for everyone to start checking in as they come out of surgery! YEA!!

Here is our group so far, 22 sleevers in 4 days (the () is location of surgery)

  4. Hi hrhlaurie,

I'm having surgery Friday. I've thought about not doing it exactly once. And remembered that I'm here at 34 and have spent my whole life dieting and I am SOOOO over the roller coaster! There is a group of us having surgery the end of the week over in the pre-op area. Come join us, and it will be easier to have other people going through the exact same things at the exact same time! There are 3 others having surgery the same day as you. There are other nervous people in there too :)

    http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/308478-may-28-31st-sleevers/page-7

  5. I hear you all!! The closer Friday gets, the more nervous I get! Not gonna lie, I hope you you 27-29ers post in here after surgery and let us know how you are doing.

Trying to enjoy the last few days of food. I KNOW we will all eat again, and we will be able to eat anything we want, just in a smaller quantity. By the holidays, I bet most of us will be down 50-80lbs! Think on that everyone!

  6. I have this nice fancy machine that makes frozen yogurt and ice cream and even has a gelato setting. It was a fabulous gift from my cousin last year.

With my surgery coming this week, I'd love to get some things made and packaged. Is there a good recipe for a sugar free ice cream with Protein that I can make? I don't like yogurt fresh from the fridge, but frozen yogurt I love. Has anyone combined some nutriblasted fresh strawberries into a recipe for frozen yogurt?

Thanks! I have some little 2oz containers to fill :)

  7. Hi Sandi! Welcome to our little group, there are currently 19 of us having surgery within 4 days. I hope your cold goes away quick, I've been worried I was coming down with one but it turned out to be allergies. If your doc doesn't require pre-op liquid you might want to enjoy food while you can, unless you are trying to lose as fast as possible obviously. You'll be a month on liquid and puree as it is and the nutrition from food might help your cold.

Just a few days left. I cant believe its this week finally.

  8. Welcome to the group dmolly, My Journey and Speeder!

I chose Dr Aceves in Mexico for a number of reasons.

A few friends had it done in Mexico so I started looking at why. One problem for me was all the crap people had to go through to get to surgery. Appointment after appointment and test after test - I don't have time for all that! Even still, I wasn't sure if insurance would cover it.

If I did do it in the US, my hospital stay would be much shorter - which I didn't like. The deaths from this surgery are typically from leaks not being caught fast enough in the first few days. I've learned that some surgeons are actually doing this as outpatient and home the same day (including Puget sound bariatrics which is the main practice near here) which I think is aweful. Since I'm going at this alone as a single mom, my safety was super important.

This surgery is just starting to be really popular in the US. Because of that, the US surgeons don't have as much experience. Dr Aceves has done over 1800 of JUST gastric sleeves, not counting bands, revisions and bypass. He teaches the docs in the US and around the world how to do what they do, and was president of Mexico bariatric association. I have yet to find a surgeon anywhere near me that has even half that many under his belt.

After lots of research I learned that not every sleeve is equal. Its not like removing a gall bladder where all of it is gone. Its an art and the results speak a lot about the quality of the sleeve. If positioned right and oversewn, the sleeve will be less prone to stretching. After seeing results from lots of surgeons where people get stalled or stuck around 150, so many more of Dr Aceves patients were in the 120-130s and his results are that patients lose on average 95% of their excess weight within a year! With typical results being around 80%, I knew there was a reason I was seeing better results from posts from Dr Aceves patients. I figured it couldn't be coincidence!

Oh, last thing, there are a ton of nurses that have reviewed their stay at this hospital and say it is the cleanest they have ever been in! I'm excited to have a nice quiet room to myself, I hear noise and room mates are an issue in US hospitals too. So super clean and quiet? Yes please!

Anyway so bottom line, it was worth it for me to find a loan and save up to get the surgery I wanted so I can get the results I've always thought were impossible! :)

  9. Oh how I wish I could take weeks off!! I'm a single mom, and just a manicurist who works for herself. If I don't work, bills don't get paid! So I'm having surgery Friday and back to work the following Wednesday - so Cupcake I'm happy to see you feel great after 4 days!! My days are slightly lighter the rest of that week (6 clients instead of 9). I will keep my Protein next to me and sip ALL day and make sure I have those gas x strips nearby if needed. Hopefully I'm good to go and they give me the good drugs to get me through. I know I'll be so ready for that weekend! Luckily my 6.5yr old is crazy easy. I get home too late to cook most nights,so she actually has tv dinners quite often (they calories aren't super high and not much frankenfoods in it, so I'm ok with it). Will make it much easier on me not to have to cook right away since I'm not eating it anyway!

I AM looking forward to the day before surgery at the hotel pool :) and the 3 days in the hospital. Hopefully I recover easily and at least can enjoy the last on those days before flying home. Surgication here I come!

  10. HI, I'm where you are with your mom. I told her about my upcoming surgery and she flipped out. She doesn't like surgery, ANY kind of surgery, it freaks her out and scares her. My mom isn't one who worries a little, she will think about it non stop and not sleep. This is a decision I thought about, researched and know without a doubt it is right for me. So as a single mom, in order for it to happen, I had to cancel a work trip that she was already watching my kiddo for. I've been waiting for this weekend for months, but I'm excited! There are friends who are overweight that I've told and they are all really excited to see how this goes, none of them had heard of it before. I have a feeling I'll have VSG friends in the future.

As for my mom knowing, I know I'll tell her. I want to get healed up and everything first. I've been doing low carb as a pre-op and she knows I'm doing low carb, so chances are she will think for awhile that I'm simply losing because of the low carb. I have a few other work trips in June, so as long as I can avoid restaurants with her, it should be easy to avoid the issue. Eventually when we go to a restaurant, and I don't order a diet pepsi (ohh I'm gonna miss it) and eat just a few bites, that's when I'll tell her. And hopefully by then I'll be 50lbs down and she will love the results and that I am healthy and made it through surgery perfectly fine. Sure its a little scary, and yea its a bummer that I don't have anyone going with me down for the surgery. But in the end it will be so worth it.

I know many have problems with head hunger at the beginning for sure. I think by 6 months out everyone is adjusted to a "new normal" and it isn't really an issue anymore. On top of that, I have yet to see anyone 6 months or more out who said they regretted it - they all say they just regret not getting it sooner! Trust me, had I known and researched this 3-4 years ago, I'd already have had it done. :)

  11. Great I'll update my sheet! I will start the first new thread for us a tad early on May 27th so we can get a new one started with surgeries!

If you all can fill in the side info (I gotta do it too!) I can add it to the sheet

Let us know your name and where you are from too! :)

I just finished with 5 hours of yard work. Ill be feeling it tomorrow!! But I want it done so I dont have to deal with it post op. I really need to get my bedroom clean too. LOL

  12. Hey all!! I've made a little spreadsheet so we can keep track of everyone! I'll update it and make a new thread each week on Saturday with the updated info on everyone... sound good? I know we area all so far apart and I don't have a support group for after surgery, so you guys are it! I look forward to talking with everyone as we go along... tips, tricks, losses, NSVs and ideas! (Like those popsicles, I just ordered some molds from Amazon and they should arrive before I go so I can get some in the fridge! I bought some other non flavored Syntrax nectar Protein that I plan to mix with some stuff to make popsicles too.)

  13. The stuff I'm looking forward to most is being able to shop in any store I want, wearing normal necklaces, watches, boots and bracelets. Also fitting in airplane seats, compact rental cars, booths at restaurants and carnival rides. And more than anything having tons more energy and not turning diabetic or having other health problems.

I hear you on ALL of these!! We just did Disneyland last month and I will feel MUCH safer on roller coasters with the shoulder straps going down farther.

I'm also looking forward to being able to cross my legs! Ohere Non scale Victories (NSVs)... Not DIE 4 minutes into wearing heels. join a coed softball team or something and not feel like no one wants me there because of my weight. Learn to scuba dive. RUN a 5k

Oh my I could go on and on!

  14. I'm am very excited to go to Dr Aceves next Friday! I did a lot of research not only on number of surgeries, but on complications, after care and real results. Dr Aceves does a lot of sleeve revisions from doctors who don't quite do it right and peoples stomachs stretch a lot. I was he very encouraged by the number of people who not only got down to their moderate goal weight but even below it and had to learn how to stop losing weight because it was done so well. I'm very excited and feel totally comfortable. The fee is $8750 and includes a night in the hotel and 3 nights in the hospital and transportation to and from the San Diego airport.
