  1. It sound like you are good. In the beginning you are surviving primarily on your Protein Shakes and Vitamins. The meals are almost negligent. As time goes on you should be able to up the volume of your meals. Some foods will be harder to eat than others during the early stages. Its good to experiment and find out which foods your body can tolerate the best.

Thanks James, I'm glad to here this.i was beginning to worry that I wasn't getting enough nutrition from food. I guess this is a result of overrating and never getting full for so many years. It's just amazing how the surgery changes everything you think about food if you follow your NUT and Surgeons directions.

  2. So I had to look up information -- are you planning to run the long one? There's also a half marathon and an 8K. If you end up doing the 26 mile race, you should totally enter in the mayor's high five award. Take a look at the requirements. http://philadelphiamarathon.com/for-runners/mayors-high-five-award I think I'll shoot to do the 8K and make it a goal to run the entire race. You're inspiring me to go for it!

For my first marathon I'm trying to do the 8K and see how it goes from there. Who knows, maybe I'll be conditioned and in good shape by November and I'll run the entire marathon. That would be awesome!!!

  3. Here's the love of my life, my protector, my best friend, my Precious!!!! My hubby and I rescued her from our local ASPCA just days before she was scheduled to be put down. She is the joy of my life and I love her. She's "My Baby Girl" and I would not trade her for anything in the world!!!

  4. Good Day Everyone!!!

Today I'm one month post op (my surgery was done on 4/21). I'm doing well and feeling good but one thing has me concerned. I cannot eat more than two to three teaspoons of food before getting the feeling that I am full. I know better than to try to eat anything more when I get this feeling. I'm concerned that I may not be getting enough nutrition in my diet. I have my 8oz Protein Drink after drinking 16 oz of Water (I have no trouble meeting my drinking requirements) and I am taking all of my supplements. I mostly have a few teaspoons of either fish or poultry along with some soft veggies. In between I'll have some greek yogurt in an effort to ensure that I am meeting my Protein requirements for the day. It this enough to maintain a healthy lifestyle or better yet.....is this what I should expect for the rest of my life, not being able to eat more than a few bites each meal. Will my intake increase as I continue to heal? I am a LPN by trade therefore, I know that I am still in the healing process. I also know that in order to heal the body needs water, food, and adequate rest. Nutritional supplements are important but not as important as the nutrition we get from foods. I would love to get feedack on this from someone who is six months to a year post op. Thank you in advance for your response, God bless.

  5. Did the surgeon give you a training program? It's totally doable with a good program. I use to do triathlons with Team in Training even at 225lbs. It was all about the training. Usually 4-6 months. Crossing that finish line will be one of the highlights of your life.

Hey Amilf2, yes he has a training program that everyone will begin on Monday, 5/26 as a group (there's five of us so far). Not wanting to wait until then I've already begun joggin in place for 30 minuets on my Wiifit and doing squats along with my regular walking routine. I know the benefits of not waiting for a rigorous workout to begin. I'm already seeing the benefits in my strength, endurance, flexibility and weight loss. I can't wait for the day of the marathon, which he has not told us yet because he wishes to see how serious we are and then three months prior to the date he's going to tell us. for me this adds to the excitement and motivates me to stay focused. I'll keep everyone posted on my progress weekly and I plan to have pictures to share as well, thanks for your feedback, have a blessed day!!!

  6. Hi Everyone.. I had my surgery Feb 6th.. The weight loss was pretty rapid the first month where I was losing over 5 lbs a week. Now I'm averaging about 11 lbs a month. I'm not able to get all of the Protein in and was wondering if that can be the reason I have stalls on my weight loss?.. I exercise daily riding my bike at over an hour each ride. Do I need to be taking in more protein? I'm so happy to find a group that is at the same stage as I am..starting weight 243..weight at surgery date 226.. As of today 175.[/quote

Congrats that's an awesome weight loss!!! Whatever you're doing, no matter how slow it seems, keep on working our program don't change because obviously, it's working!!!

  7. I'm feeling a bit frustrated. I'm 5 weeks out. I'm sick and tired of the food I'm allowed to have at this point and the fact that I have 10 more days of it. I will never eat tuna or white flaky fish again after this. I'm not eating enough Protein because eggs are literally the only thing I can stand. So some of my meals don't have protein. I'm also nauseous all the time. I was on an antibiotic for a bladder infection but I had to stop. I'm hoping that helps. I've resorted to eating saltines as needed. I've also determined my gut will not tolerate cheese. My pouch is fine with it but my gut is not. I know this is minor stuff in relation to what many experience. I am grateful these are minor annoyances and not major complications. I try to keep it all in perspective.

You are doing great!!! I've been following your posts since I joined this site and you always share your journey in a way that informs and inspires me and others I'm sure. This post is no different. It just shows how we all feel from time to time. Continue doing what you're doing in time this will all be a memory to be shared over and over again as you Celebrate the new you. God bless.

  8. Mrsglomartin, what a WONDERFUL goal!!! You can do it too as long as you keep your eyes on the prize! I'm hoping for surgery in early Aug. Perhaps next year I could run a 5k, I've always wanted to try that. Right now my knees are shot from this excess weight but I am hoping weight loss will take care of that.

So you are doing great! Listen to your stomach!! I think next to your doctors advice your stomach comes in 2nd as an expert! :-)

Let us know about that race so we can cheer you on!!!!

Hi Nancy E., thanks for the inspiration and positive motivation!!! Congratulations on making a decision that is going to change your life forever!!! I know it seems far away but August is gonna be here before you know it and you will be sitting on the losers bench in anticipation of your new life. Don't worry too much about comparing your loss or the many ordeals you will go thorugh with others because we all heal differently, have different tolerances for pain, and although we share in our desire to change our lifestyles, we all have different approaches to them and you must find the one that works best for you!!! If you begin an exercise routine now you will greatly reap the benefits after surgery even if it's just walking for 30 mins each day, that's what I did. I pray that you surgery will go smoothly and that God will allow everything to work in your favor. stay strong, stay motivated, and always keep a positive attitude, trust me, it will help you endure those rough Patches that wil come. remember those times will be so well worth it when you see those pounds come melting off and your energy levels begin to soar!!!!

  9. November this year? Or next? I ran in high school too and have always wanted to get back into it but the weight has taken it's toll and I wonder if I'll ever be able to again. I was thinking of making a tiny little goal of a 5k late this year. But a marathon???

You GO girl! (and if I get postop and find I can start running some, I'll hit you up to do a 5k with me somewhere near Philly! Maybe one of those Turkey trots on Thanksgiving Day... better than staring at all that food you can't eat!)

    Ginger

Hi Ginger Snaps, yes, that would be the marathon held in November 2014, this year!!! I'm very excited and yes, I would love for us to meet up and do a run together in Philly or Jersey (I believe you live in Jersey). That would be great and it would motivate both of us to continue our healthy lifestyles. Anything done with others makes it more fun and increases the possibility of us staying focused. You can do this too!!! I suffered for years from low back pain that was so severe that I could not walk more than a few steps before I had to stop and rest. I also have osteoarthritis in my knees, shoulders, hips, and spine that the surgery and weight lost and exercise has helped to greatly allieviate the pain. The longlasting results of this surgery is so worth it!! God bless you and good luck with your surgery. I know you will be fine, I can't wait to plan our marathon together in the very near future!!!

  11. I started walking in the hospital, four hours after surgery and little by little I increased my pace and the amount of steps I took. I'm four weeks post op and I'm walking an hour two times per day and doing aerobics, yoga, and strength training. The more you move the better you will feel. Don't push yourself when your body tells you to stop, STOP!!! But focus on gradually doing more. by week two I was walking outdoors with my dog four about five blocks and back increasing it as I felt better. whatever you decide to do, make sure it is what you like to do and then you will be more likely to wan tto do it consistently, Good luck with your plan, God bless.

Hello all 6 days postop and still have some incision pain. I'm doing lite house choirs and a little walking. I think I'm just getting antsy and feel like I should be doing more. I take a short walk to the mailbox etc. Any support or insight is appreciated. Drinking and eating 2 oz is going fine. The pills are tough but I manage to get them down. I have my first follow up on Tuesday with Nutrician and surgeon.

  12. Hello everyone, today is week number four post op and I am not at all excited about starting soft foods. I am doing well as far as getting my 64 oz. of Water each day and protien in from the shakes and food, but I'm just not hungry and I can only eat two-three teaspoons of food at a time. I joined myfitnesspal and I'm monitoring what I eat, drink, and my exercises that I do every day. This is a new and exciting world for me because my tastes have changed drastically (I can no longer tolerate anything sweet or fatty) and that's great news for me because I was addicted to sweet-fatty foods for many years. My new stomach is definitely in control of what it likes and doesn't like and I am okay with that. I weighed myself this morning and I have lost another five pounds. Life is good.

At my support group last Wednesday my surgeon gave us a challenge. He challenged us to set a long-term goal for ourselves. Then he asked how many of us would like to run the marathon in Philly in November. I said I have always wanted to get back into running (I used to run track and was on the cheer leaders in high school, and I was on the girls volleybally team) I said yes. I looked at all of the training that I will have to do in preparation and I am going to give it my all. I believe that by setting this training goal I'll be more focused on getting the exercise I need everyday and it will help me to achieve my goal to get to 140 lbs in a years time.

  13. I'm getting up on a week and the scale teeters back and forth between 2 lbs, I loose it I gain it, loose it gain it....it's so frustrating. I am having the hardest time eating to where I could honestly care less about good, either it makes me nauseated or it's too filling or it goes down ok....I never know...

Are you counting your broth, SF Popsicles, and watered down juices (since they're half Water and half juice my NUT says they count)? Also SF Jello is water based. Don't know if they count but it seems they should.

  14. My nose begins to run and I sneeze. The taste of the food which was good up until that time; suddenly the joy of eating is gone. If I eat a little more, it becomes painful and as I enter dumping syndrome.

Thanks for sharing this James. I thought it was weird that even though I'm still only able to eat two to three teaspoons of food at a time the food seems to lose its taste if I try to have more. I'm still on puréed diet at three weeks out.
