  1. I am 3 days postop and I occasionally can feel my sleeve when something is passing through. It's a weird feeling yet very painful at the same time. Had anyone experienced this?

Yes, it turned out it was esophageal spasms. I had it every time i ate or drank. It lasted a few months and we're crazy painfull. It did eventually go away tho.

  2. I had a Traditional DS but my surgeons left the length of a modified, about 9 ft. I have pretty regular morning bowel movements. I take a tablespoon of castor oil if my eating has been on point, so it moves easily. If I have sugar, i do get faul gas and an oil slick loose bm...so, I don't do it often and know I'll be home, alone, near the bathroom. Never trusting a fart. I usually always have one premier Protein shake 28g or a myprotein 30g chocolate cookie. I aim for 80g a day in diet, so I probably get 110 a day. My 3 month labs were perfect.

Ty for the reply. How has your weight loss been with the modified DS length?

  3. Yeah I know what you mean, and I've lost 28 lbs since surgery 41 since preop.

I'm really not sure. I talk to my surgeon on wensday so I'll ask him all my questions then. I'm leaning towards the traditional DS only because there isn't long term data on the SIPS. I don't wanna fail again u know?
    How much have u lost?

    Awesome! Congrats!!

  4. I'm happy with my surgery so far. I had bowel problems before and would make frequent stops to the bathroom and ever since surgery I only go once a day, so I was happy about that. I'm actually not sure I malabsorb, but I don't have a problem with it being less than traditional DS I'm just happy I'm finally losing weight. Are you going to be having traditional DS or SIPS?

  5. No problem, and I've had SIPS surgery, and I find it hard to get my 80, but I'm also only about 6 weeks out, so hopefully that'll get easier.

Oh wow your doing really good to get 80 and only 6 weeks out. How do u like the sips? Have u noticed alot of bathroom visits? Did ur surgeon tell u how much u malabsorb? I can't seem to find that online. It's only the DS stats.

  6. 80 to 100 is usually if you get SIPS, where your common channel is 250+ which allows more absorption than regular DS where your cc is way smaller therefore less absorption and more Protein needed.

Oh! That totally makes sense. I've heard alot of people don't realize their SIPS arent the real DS and thus call it DS. Explains why they said 80-100. Thanks for that insight. [emoji4]

Do you all find it hard to get in 120+ Protein?

  7. According to the internet
Malabsorption syndrome occurs when something prevents the bowel from absorbing important nutrients and fluids, including Proteins, fats, and Vitamins. Malabsorption can be caused by conditions such as celiac disease, Crohn's disease, lactose intolerance, and intestinal damage.
So I don't think sleeve, RNY or duodenal surgery impacts Protein absorption. (I am 3 1/2 years post-op RNY gastric bypass surgery and I currently obtain all my Protein from food alone. I no longer take protein supplements and my blood work shows my protein levels are fine.) It sounds like another underlying condition (My last biopsy showed the small intestine villi were enlarged.) is at the root of the problem.
I am not a doctor and I suspect most individuals on this site cannot offer you the medical advice that you are seeking. So I would recommend that you work this very specific problem with your surgeons office.

Sorry for any confusions. I'm not asking for medical advice. Just giving some background info. My question is if any DS'ers have difficulty with protein malabsorption despite hitting the 80-100g. In the DS surgery the intestines are rerouted and you absorb less fat, protein and complex carb. That's the "magic" of it.

  8. I had the VSG in 2014 and lost 110lbs. Unfortunately a mix of sleeve failure (after an egd my gastroenterologist said if he hadn't known I had the surgery he never would have guessed, my stomach was normal sized) and emotional eating cause me to gain back about half.

My surgeon offered a revision with option to do resleeve, RNY, or DS. I don't wanna do an RNY because I need frequent EGD'S. I've always wanted the DS so that seems most logical.

Vitamins and bowel movements don't worry me. What worries me is the amount of Protein malabsorption. Has anyone had issues with this?

I already have a protein losing enteropathy so this is a concern.

On one hand adding the DS could exacerbate the issue since it's not certain where the protein loss is located .

On the other hand, it could help. My last biopsy showed the small intestine villi were enlarged. Which could be (and most likely is) the reason for the protein loss. If the diseased part is bypassed with the DS then it could potentially give me a better shot at protein absorption.

Now people say eat 80-100g of protein a day and no worries. Has this amount ever given u an issue?

    Thanks in advance!

  9. Your Vitamin regiment will depend on the type of surgery that you had. You are posting under the duodenal switch forum but you are identifying yourself as a gastric sleeve patient. The Vitamin regiment is very different between these two groups.
Your surgeon's office should have defined this for you. According to my Bariatric Discharge Instructions, duodenal switch patients were advised to take:
Four children's chewable complete multivitamin's daily
    1800-2400 mg. calcium citrate daily
A total of 5000 International Units of vitamin D3 daily
1000 micrograms sublingual B12 weekly or B12 injections monthly
and 100 mg Thiamin (Vitamin B1) weekly
I underwent a different type of surgery (RNY gastric bypass) and I was told not to use Gummy Vitamins because they would not be absorbed properly. There are two types of Iron supplements and I was told to use Ferrous Sulfate for best absorption. There are also different chemistries of B12. I use the sublingual B12 and was told to use methylcobalamin.

Yes I know it's all different. I was sleeved in 2014 but it has failed. My surgeon offered me resleeve, bypass or DS. I've chosen DS due to medical reasons. Im sure he will give me vitamin instructions but I wanted to do all research ahead of time. Sorry for any confusion, I just didn't want to bore everyone with my details, but I am a soon to be DS'er

  10. I've done alot of research, and its possible Im looking too much in to this, but I can't seem to find a definitive answer on how much of each Vitamins are required daily. I found this list....

-Adult Multivitamin, w/100% of the recommended daily allowance

-1800 mg to 2400 mg calcium citrate (divided into three or four doses of about 600 mg each, taken at least two hours apart)

-18 mg to 27 mg Iron for menstruating women

    -10,000 IU Vitamin A

    -2000 IU Vitamin D

    -300 mcg Vitamin K

    -B-50 complex is optional

Is this accurate? Ive read alot of posts of people taking alot more so I have a hard time believing this is a comprehensive list.

  11. Congrats to all the aug 2014 sleevers! Wow we have made it a YEAR!!

Yesterday was my 1 year surgiversary. HW 364, SW 347, CW 254. I have to admit I'm pissed at myself for not losing more. My husband and mom often have to remind me that I have a huge amount of stress and losing as much as I have is an acomplishment.

Despite not losing as much as I want, I have had some great nsv's. I havnt been sick in over 6 months! (Huge victory for me because I have an immune deficiency and normally get sick every other week), I can cross my legs and curl up in a chair, I can bike 4 miles without stopping, I have inspired at least 10 people at work to use their breaks walking, I've been able to RUN with my 3yo son, and so so much more. Best thing I've done for myself :)

  12. Wow that's some extream jealousy. What do u do? I'm amazed your coworkers are so childish.

For the most part I've had encouragement from my coworkers. With the exception of one woman. She started "tatting" on me to my boss. I use my breaks at work to walk around the neighborhood. She told my boss that I took too long on my break and then told my boss I took 3 walks one day. It was funny tho cause my boss asked how many walks I took one day and I flat out told her 3.... my two normal ones on my morning break and afternoon break. And I added one during my lunch break (which I clocked out for). My boss laughed. She wasn't upset anyways. I surpass my coworkers in the work I get done and she thinks it's great I'm losing weight. I know this girl is just jealous, but it really bothers me that she's trying to get me in trouble.

I guess it's just the price we pay

  13. I'm one of those people who are extremely sensitive to heat (70+ and I get sick) so I understand your concern. I can tell you from personal experience that yes it does happen easier, but not much worse. One thing that you should do is make sure u take gummy/liquid Vitamins (it absorbs better). If you are deficient in any nutrients the heat exhaustion gets much worse. My arms get so weak I can't lift them and a few times I've fallen cause my legs gave out. Turns out I had a vit b deficiency. But I don't regret getting the sleeve. It's very manageable! Good luck

  14. I have no idea what my pcp thought of the surgery. I went in to her, handed her the surgeons fax number and told her to fax the referral to him. I really gave her no choice. I tell you this because I want to remind you that Dr's don't get to choose what happens with your medical. Don't ask her, tell her you want a refferal. If she refuses, just go to a different dr. You don't have to give her up as your pcp. Just agree to disagree with her.
