Has anybody had a revision from sleeve to RnY?

Why did you have it done?

    How far postop are you?

    Any complications?

How much did you loose with the sleeve?

How much have you lost since the revision?

    How do you feel now?

Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I'm curious if you did the sleeve to RNY revision. If so, when? I had it done the day after Thanksgiving 2021. Reflux was gone immediately. I've lost 60 lbs. I lost it pretty quickly, I'm maintaining for over a month now. I was a little freaked out having problems with stopping the weight loss. I did the same thing with sleeve surgery in 2010. I can eat often, but very little at a time. I struggle with meat, an ounce is safe, maybe 1.25 oz, after that, it will end up 'sitting' between my ribs and 9 times out of 10 I'll have to throw up to get relief. Surgery was in Nov, then after a sonogram and endoscopy I had my gallbladder removed in March. (They also discovered a very large marginal ulcer. (What the heck is that?) I had to take a liquid medication 3xs a day and they did another endoscopy 6 weeks later. Ulcer went from very large to large. Six weeks later another endoscopy showed it was healed. Now I'm just focusing on trying to not lose more weight. Gaining 10 lbs would be fine. I'd like to stop there and maintain just under 150. How realistic is this, maintaining from now on. Sadly, sweets and some fried meats (catfish, chicken fried steak) are easy to keep down, mashed potatoes too. I have to weigh meat, and sometimes then it still gets to me. What's up with that? Any advice, insight etc would be greatly appreciated. Share you story with me if you've had the sleeve to bypass revision.

I would definitely call your doctor. This does not sound normal to me. Even if they are two hours away they can see you or recommend someone near you.

Taking your supplement is critical. Are you unable to take it because you throw up? Mine makes me throw up sometimes. I have to take it with food. Can you take yours with a Protein Shake? Are you not able to drink?

It sounds serious, so call the doc or their office to talk to a PA/NP. Good luck!

I was drinking three Protein Shakes a day pre-op. Now they feel heavy, 8 oz is a lot to get down, and I need to get at least two down per day. I was throwing it up every time I'd drink a third of one. I tried two others without any change. I gave up. I am not taking the Vitamins with food because when I take them it feels like I've eaten a meal. I have the Bariatric Advantage choc chews. I loved them after sleeve surgery, not now, and one fills me up! I am drinking two glasses of FairLife lactose free milk every day.

The office is closed today and tomorrow because of the weather. I will call Monday. Thank you.

What kind of Vitamins & what time of day do you take them?
Start a journal of when you eat, take Vitamins & when you feel any of those things.
I’m nauseous about 3-4 days a weeks. I buy meclizine on Amazon ($14.99/3 bottles of 100 pills) & keep them with me I had my RNY almost 4 years ago.

I had a revision from sleeve to RNY 11 weeks ago tomorrow. I was severely dehydrated a month ago, uncontrolled vomiting, BAD headache. I should have gone to the ER, but the wait was hours. It took four days before I was feeling better. I am back to drinking Pedialyte again, I was up at 4:30 AM vomiting. I have Phenergan suppositories, it knocked me out but I finally was able to rest. Even when this isn't going on, I can only eat an oz or 1.5 oz at a time. I weigh and/or measure my food. Several times a week an hour or more AFTER eating I'll have been gurgling and then it starts churning right above my breastbone. I know I'll have to throw up. Sure enough I do, and I'll feel better. I am going to contact the doctor; my bloodwork and my next follow-up visit is the second week in March. I want to know if I'm overreacting, if not, how do I word this to him where it makes sense? I am only getting in 30 - sometimes 70 grams of the 100 he wants me to get. I am not taking all my supplements. I took my Iron and multi this morning and threw it up.

  4. I had sleeve to RNY revision the day after Thanksgiving. I still can only eat 1 oz safely and up to 1.5 oz depending on what it is. Even then sometimes 1.5 hours later my chest start churning and gurgling, and I end up throwing up. I feel better after, but this is happening on a regular basis. Any ideas, doctor is in Dallas, 2 hours away. I'm not even sure how to explain this to him. I was severely dehydrated a month ago and talked to him and had an appointment soon after, a scheduled follow-up after surgery. He doesn't know what is going on now. I'm not able to take my supplement like I must do. Eating is iffy and liquids feels like a full-time job! I'm overwhelmed.

I am in the process of getting a surgery date for revision, sleeve to bypass - & this time around I feel a bit more scared than I did previously with my first surgery. I am worried of complications after surgery, did anyone run into any crazy complications after their revision?

Nothing crazy but very different. Eating is a challenge, getting enough fluids is a challenge taking supplements is a challenge. I'm struggling. I've been severely dehydrated about a month ago. I should have gone to the ER but they're full of Covid and the wait is HOURS literally. I drank Pedialyte unflavored, added grape juice, chicken broth and milk. It too four day to get through the vomiting and severe headache, but I still haven't fully recovered. I need to get a handle on this. I'm so glad to be through with reflux and the non-cardiac chest pains from the hernia, but dang, I want to get past all this other business!

I’m almost 16 months out from revision. I had VSG to RNY revision due to GERD 8 months after my VSG because of a hiatal hernia of almost my entire sleeve. The protonix after surgery made the GERD worse until I stopped taking it and I was great after.

As for food tolerance after revision I couldn’t eat eggs or chicken for almost a year but handled egg substitutes well. I also still can’t eat cucumbers which is a bummer because I love them. Some days I still can’t eat more than a few bites of things and other days It seems like I can’t eat enough. I do experience dumping sometimes but it’s a random thing that happens even if I’ve eaten the food before so there’s no rhyme or reason to it.

I woke up at 4:30 AM throwing up. It's been a bad day. Dumping I think, I am trying to just get something in, and something will calories so I indulged in about 4.5 oz of a milkshake. I won't do that again.

I'll eat, weigh and measure, less to 2 oz. I'm fine and then sometimes 1.5 hours AFTER eating it will start gurgling and feels like it's just sitting there on my breastbone. I know if I throw up I will feel better. It will not go away. WHAT causes this? I'm worried about continuing to lose weight. I'd like to stop, but that seems impossible at this point.

    Hello everyone,

I see as I read all of the recent postings that you all are pretty new to this new life you now have, but I would love to help anyone who needs advise on anything about whatever is on your minds.

I had my surgery on march 28 th 2011. I was 422 pounds and today I am 119 pounds at 5 ft 7 tall. And since then I have not found a love in my life as most do not understand all of the things that comes with the new you. Anyone also having this problem?

    My name is Athena

I had a sleeve to bypass revision 7 weeks ago. I can only eat about 1 oz of food at a time. I've tried three different Protein Shakes, they all literally make me sick after about 1/4 of the shake. I can feel it churning and gurgling in my chest. I can't get my Protein in with just food. I am not getting all my supplements taken, it's like eating a meal taking the big Calcium pills. I really am frustrated. I need to weigh or measure everything I put in my mouth, which is fine. I was severely dehydrated last weekend. I should have gone to the ER but the wait time is up to 10 hours. I knew I wasn't drinking enough. I didn't know how to prioritize supplements, protein and drinking. My skin was very dry, my lips stayed chapped for two weeks prior to the sudden onset of uncontrollable vomiting and an instant pounding headache. Not a Migraine but a headache that I couldn't get rid of. That was Saturday a week ago. I talked to my surgeon in Dallas Sunday. He wasn't to make sure my abdomen wasn't hurting. He said if I started running a fever 100 or above get to the ER. I'm 2.5 hours away from him. I started doing better, I was drinking Pedialyte mixed with no sugar added grape juice like crazy. I ended up drinking 2.5 bottles, 33.8 oz each, and grape juice and two cups of lactose free milk every day. I'm back to eating again, trying to. I've thrown up twice today, I woke up at 4:30 AM yesterday and threw up. I haven't had nearly enough to drink, eat and I've taken 1/3 of the calcium I should be taking. Any advice at all? Thank you.

I am 8 weeks post op. I've lost 42 lbs. I am now at a stall weight which is fine I guess, I've read serveal post that say this stall is just temperary so I'm trying to remain optimistic. My biggest problem is "food". Nothin goes down right and nothing feels good in my stomach. I'ts very discouraging. And I miss the satified feeling you get when you eat something really good. Everything I try to eat taste okay but not good. Plus I get really full really fast.

I had surgery the day after Thanksgiving. I was 7 weeks out this past Friday. I'm struggling. I was/am dehydrated, severely dehydrated. I knew I wasn't drinking enough for a couple of weeks, my skin was very dry and my lips stayed chapped. Last Saturday at 4 PM I started vomiting uncontrollably and at the same time my head was pounding. We were out running errands, my husband had to pull over. I had to take a couple of drinking of Water so I'd have something to throw up. I kept heaving on the way home, luckily we were about 6 blocks away. My husband went to Walgreens to get Pedialyte and he was able to talk to the pharmacist. He said classic signs of advanced dehydration. Keep me drinking, so I was doing nothing but drinking this stuff, lactose free milk and chicken broth. Called and was able to talk to my doctor Sunday. He said what I was doing was good. If I started running a fever or 100 or more, go to the ER. Did good until I felt a little better Monday evening, then I made the mistake of trying to eat some stew meat. He wants me to start getting Protein Shakes in, 100 grams of Protein a day. I'm on my third brand, they all make me sick after about 1/4 of the bottle. I can't get in all my supplements; it feels like I'm eating a meal. I am at a loss. I cannot comfortably eat more than an oz of food at a time. Have you had problems with being sick?

Hello! For those that have gotten the revision because of the GERD, did you feel relief immediately or did it take some time? My revision from sleeve to bypass was on 10/27, however I still feel GERD. I’ve heard some ppl say they felt immediate relief and others that it takes time. Can you all tell me what was your experience please. I am praying it goes away. The main reason I got the revision was for relief.

Immediately! I haven't taken a PPI or antacid since the day of surgery, plus I've lost 20 lbs. Surerty was the day after Thanksgiving. Barely two weeks ago.

Hello, wondering who much you gained in 11 years? I am also 11 years post-op VSG, I have regained 40lbs however the GERD is just so bad every day I did not know you could get a revision to fix that. Thank you!

I gained 40 lbs!! I maintain at or below goal (150) for 8 years!! I've already lost just under 20 lbs, but I'm on full liquids. No Gerd, no chest pain from the hiatal hernia. Right now, other than struggling with Protein, this was a win/win!!

DISCLAIMER: I do not recommend this type of diet for those that do not have the same metabolism as I do. Also, I don’t normally eat like this all the time! I’m just in the middle of a crap food period, which I have on occasion 😂

I've been looking for a surgeon who can perform weight loss surgery on me. My problem is that I have a BMI of 30, I have hypothyroidism and keep gaining weight. I'm the heaviest I've ever been. I've tried everything and nothing works. Doctors wont even see me because of my BMI. I'm willing to self pay.

    Does anyone have any recommendations?

You might check with Dr. Victor Gonzalez in Dallas. (Medical Center Dallas on Forrest) He's who I just used for revision surgery. If it is medically necessary, it just is. He's a good surgeon. I had a sleeve to RNY revision almost two weeks ago.

I did pure liquids for 3 days and moved to mashed foods. I do not like eggs or cottage cheese... but on my list is FF Refried Beans... so I did move to them quickly. I know each program is different and your NUT may work with the Dr. office and tailor to you personally but I couldn't do just broth and Jello - no way EVER.

I still have to take omeprazole 20mg per day - I had bad acid reflux the other day and it turns out I had forgotten to take my morning pills and well, suffered the consequences.

Anyone post op have issues with acid reflux OR has their GERD nearly disappeared?

I had revision surgery due to severe reflux. I got RNY two weeks ago this Friday. Yes, the day after Thanksgiving is when I did it. Ugh! I haven't had ANY reflux since surgery. I've moved on to smashed refried Beans with no problems, but I'm supposed to be on a clear liquid diet of Protein and broth for two weeks. Full liquids (no bumps or lumps), cream Soups, milk and everything on the clear liquid diet.

I’m 62 and will be having bypass surgery on 10/25. I’m so happy for this next chapter to begin.

How are you doing? I have surgery the day after Thanksgiving. whey Protein smell is killing me. I'm supposed to be on Clear Liquids, but I started RTD Quest Protein Drinks a couple of days ago. I couldn't do the other, and found myself doing very little. Decaf coffee and tea both taste different, not bad, just I don't enjoy them now. I put the Benefiber in a hot cup of coffee every morning.

I was 63 at time of my bypass surgery 3 years ago last May. I lost 150 pounds in about 18 months. I have regained 30. But have leveled off. I am restarting my liquid diet to restart weight loss. I feel great most days however I still have an occasional dumping.
All in all I would have it done again if I knew all of this. Wish I had it done decades earlier though.

I had surgery the day after Thanksgiving. I'm still on the liquid diet until this coming Friday. Tell me about dumping. What does it feel like and what causes it for you?

I'm 48 and in the beginning phases (dietician visits and tests) of bariatric surgery. I am probably getting the RNY. A lot of posts that I see are from younger women (which is great!), but I'm concerned that the weight will come off slower now that I'm older. Especially since menopause is probably around the corner. Could you share your stories (successes or challenges), so I could get an idea of what things look like for women close to their 50's. Thanks!

I just had a sleeve to RNY revision due to severe reflux and a large hiatal hernia. I had sleeve surgery at age 50. (I'm 62 now) I lost 93 lbs from my pre-surgery weight. I reached my goal and went five lbs below for a 'pad'. I stayed at or below goal for 8.5 years. I was diagnosed with arthritis in my hips, ended up on thyroid meds for a while and then Covid. Grazing and less walking put on 40 lbs. (I was NEVER a gym rat, actually I never did any formal exercise) Take advantage of the honeymoon period. Follow the rules, I highly recommend logging your food. It will help you make better choices. I stopped doing that after shoulder surgery and it was a downward spiral. I'm back to logging! This was medically needed, but since I had to do this, I hope to lose and keep off between 25 - 30 lbs. I had surgery the day after Thanksgiving, I'm down 17.5 lbs since my pre-op diet weight. Good luck!!!

  17. Congratulations! My RNY was last Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. I'm doing good drinking. I posted on another page, I'm a little worried because I'm taking bigger drinks than the medicine cup. I took Tylenol (liquid) at noon today and I was fine until 9 PM. I took a pain pill at 6:30 this morning and then again a little while ago. My breast bone and down my left side is very sore, but all in all, I'm going goo. No hunger at all right now. I'm glad it's over with and I'm on the road to recovery. Good luck, keep us all posted!!

  18. Hey y'all. I had surgery the day after Thanksgiving. I was in at surgery was at 8 and I was discharged the following day at 4. I'm not hungry, I not taking pain pills throughout the day. I took one last night at 9 and then again at 6 this morning. I took a dose of liquid Tylenol about noon. I took my final one for the day at 9 PM. I'm walking, walking, around the house, and we even got out today and I walked around Walmart for a while just to walk. The only thing I'm worried about is I can take a drink of Water, more than the little medicine cup. Is that bad? Harmful? I guess maybe I need to be pouring my drinks into the little cup. What do you think?

  19. Sleeve to RNY revision this Friday. The day after Thanksgiving. I am excited, nervous and someone else said they didn't feel prepared. That's me. I have Vitamins and all that jazz, but I hate not knowing what to expect. How different is this going to be from sleeve surgery; will the reflux really go away......what do I eat to start off with. I have papers, but I still don't feel like I have a grip on what's getting ready to happen.

  20. Had sleeve surgery June 2010. Like you, I lost down to exactly 132. My husband and daughters were alarmed because I could STOP losing. My goal was 150. I started adding higher caloric foods and gained to 145, I like that 5 lb pad. I maintained at or below goal for eight years. I have arthritis in my hips and after we left the Dallas area, I don't have the big malls to go to. I used to go and walk, no power walking, just window shopping, but I did it quite a bit. We also had a 2-story house and I'd purposely go up and down the stairs more than I needed to. Here I am, severe reflux and a hiatial hernia. I have regained a little over 40 lbs. Revision surgery is this Friday. I hope surgery will fix the medical problems and hopefully I'll drop 25 lbs!! Good luck!!

Where is the best place to buy broths? Which ones do you like the best? I will look up how to make Asian broth. Don't think I have ever had it.

I am going to have to start experimenting. So far I have only tried the chocolate Protein Shakes. I know that will get old quick.

Thanks for welcoming me and sharing! Have a great day!

My favorite RTD shakes are Quest, unfortunately right now I can only get them from Amazon! The chocolate almost tastes like choc milk. I've been on the pre-op since Saturday. I was drinking Campbells chicken noodle, adding the can of Water and then straining it. I saw Swanson's last night and decided to buy a can. One can is a serving, calories for the entire can is 20 and 2 gr of carbs. I add a little salt and pepper, it was very good. I went to the grocery store this afternoon and got a carton and picked up two cans of their beef broth. Hopefully it will be just as good.

Honestly, go to the grocery store and buy a rotisserie chicken for dinner tonight. Keep the carcass and use it to make your own broth. It will taste better than store bought, be healthier for you and you can be precise with the sodium/spices.

What spices would you add to make it taste even better?

I have to do two weeks, full liquid (protein shakes and SF jello/popsicles only). I am seriously dreading this. Any recommendations for savory broths? TIA.

I'm on the pre-op diet. Canned Swanson chicken broth is good. I add a little salt and pepper. The whole can is a serving, it's 15 or 20 calories. 1 or 2 carbs. I just got beef broth, I'm going to try it tomorrow.
