    Sleeve to RNY

I am considering a revision like you did and for the same reason, severe reflux. The surgeon I met with last week said he considers dumping a good side effect, it teaches us what to stay away from. I hope insurance will approve it since it's medically necessary, and hopefully I'll have good results.
  2. How does bypass compare to sleeve? Have you or are you learning what causes dumping? If I have revision surgery it will be due to severe GERD that has developed since sleeve surgery. I've been dealing with it for about seven years. I'm trying to educate myself as much as possible on RNY.
  3. I am hoping ins approves the revision from sleeve to bypass. I have severe GERD and also a hiatal hernia. When I had the endoscopy done in Nov 2019 there was also a stricture and ulcer. The prescription PPI worked until it didn't, he upped it to twice a day and it worked until 3 months ago. Now I'm back to needing Tums as well as the prescription almost daily. I like your post. I only have a regain of 35 lbs, so losing that would just be the icing on the cake. If I can get rid of the reflux I'll be so happy. I can't imagine doing this for the rest of my life! Tell me, what things can you eat that you couldn't after sleeve surgery and what about dumping. The bariatric surgeon I met with last week said they consider it a good side effect to help patients know what to be careful of or avoid altogether. Good luck!!!
  4. My first appointment for severe reflux after my 2010 VSG was last week. He recommended RNY, I had a endoscopy in Nov 2019. The gastrologist put me on a prescription PPI. It worked, I went from 8 - 10 Tums a day, EVERY day, to none. That lasted for two months then it started coming back. Dr had me up the dose to twice a day. That worked until three months ago. I'm back to needing to eat Tums almost daily. There's no rhyme or reason, I've cut back or out anything that I see recommended online, but the reflux bothers me after things that absolutely should not bother me, and it isn't consistent. Sometimes something will really get me, but the next time it won't, and vice versa. I hope the insurance will approve this. I was self pay with VSG, I can't do that again. This is medically necessary, so many it won't be turned down. Good luck!!! Keep us posted.

    VGS vs Bypass

I had sleeve surgery ten years ago. I have an appointment with a bariatric surgeon because of severe GERD and I have a hiatal hernia. I am on a prescription PPI AND eating Tums!!! I would recommend the RNY for sure.
  6. How are you doing? Is GERD gone? Did you lose any weight, any other pros or cons? My appointment is tomorrow. I am sitting here with Tums, I've already had two this evening, plus I'm on a prescription PPI. I hope he can help me, I hope Anthem BCBS will approve it. How is RNY recovery and eating different from sleeve surgery? Good luck!
  7. Good luck, it won't be long now!! My appointment is tomorrow. I don't know why I'm nervous, but I am!
  8. I started having non-cardiac chest pains less than 14 months after sleeve surgery. (surgery was June 2010) I was told I was having some sort of spasms. Medication prescribed did nothing. Fast forward to 2015, I'd gradually worked myself up to 8 - 10 Tums EVERY day. I had them in the console of the truck, next to my bed so I could turn over and get a couple in the middle of the night, almost every single night, I had another bottle in the medicine cabinet. I had NO idea it was bad to take that many. I finally went to the doctor after reading this is not good. He did a endoscopy and I have a hiatal hernia, I had a stricture and an ulcer. He put me on a prescription PPI. That was Nov 2019. It worked immediately, but only lasted about 2 months and I started needing Tums again occasionally. Now I'm eating them more often. I've had the bloating for years and occasionally have trouble swallowing. I made an appointment with a bariatric surgeon, clearly this other doctor isn't too familiar with bariatric surgery. I am hoping this new doctor will be able to help me. I've vomited every so often in the prior years, but in the past two or three weeks I've thrown up 4 times. Always in the evening after dinner. Any idea why this would start now?

    Dr Long in Texas

will he do RNY while in there repairing the hernia, GERD issues?

    Dr Long in Texas

Do tell, what does the hernia route mean? I know some are repairing hernias and doing sleeve surgery at the same time. Insurance covers the hernia. I was self pay sleeve surgery in 2010. He found and repaired a hernia while he was in there. Now I have another one, and have had GERD since about 18 months after sleeve surgery. I did not realize it could be fixed. I didn't realize up to 10 Tums every day was bad. I am sure he'll suggest RNY, I hope insurance will cover it!!
  11. They use the Michael Jackson drug, you won't know a thing. It's not a big deal at all.

That's what I like to hear, you don't miss it. When I was off sugar except for natural sugar in an occasional piece of fruit, I did not miss it. I eat sweet stuff more often now, and I have to make myself not give in too often. I'm logging again and my sugar grams per day are sometimes single digit! Thank you!

Yikes!! Caffeinated or decaff, or does it matter? Creamer? Coffee Mate or half and half? I'm in the process of taking myself off caffeinated coffee. I cut out afternoon coffee totally a few weeks ago. If I want a cup I have ONE but only decaff. Fully caffeinated in the mornings, 3 cups. I mixed some decaff with reg ground coffee this morning. Still three cups, baby steps. I'd like to get down to 1/4 reg and 3/4 decaff, or maybe totally decaff if it has any bearing on my GERD, ulcer etc.

Speaking of bread, is that a problem for RNY patients? I have a friend who's always had a problem with bread since being banded.
  15. Thank you. If I do end up getting a revision, I will tip toe into solid foods. Dumping does not sound like a good time!! I appreciate your response!

Yikes, that would for sure be a deterrent!! I'm glad it doesn't last as long now. Sugar is definitely a weakness, so I keep things I'd be tempted by, out of the house most of the time. I'm anxious to see what this doctor says. My surgeon in Dallas retired, we've moved so this is a brand new guy. Thank you for the information!!
  17. I think I'd feel like you. I'd like to know I HAD to stop after bite #2 of whatever. I have a friend who knew she could eat five candy corn, #6 would be a deal breaker!! LOL

How are you doing? My first appointment with a new bariatric surgeon in in about 3.5 weeks. Sleeved in 2010, indigestion, heartburn, GERD started about 18 months later, progressing to 8 - 10 Tums every single day for years. I had no idea it was a big deal, but it is not safe. I am sure the subject of a revision will come up. Please tell me how you're doing if you have time.

Good luck!!! Please keep me posted!!

did you have the revision because of GERD? I'm gathering information prior to my June 17th appt. What makes you dump and how bad is it? Do you throw up, hot flashes or what? Do you think it to be a helpful thing as far as a deterrent? Fats and sweets, do you have to stay totally away or just be very careful? Thank you! Oh, are you still on a PPI? If I have to go this route, I sure hope I can get off of the meds.

    Sleeve Revision to Bypass

I'll be eleven years out June 11th. I lost it fast and maintained at or below goal for six years. I've regained some, but not even half. I'm more concerned with another hiatal hernia (one was discovered and repaired when I had WLS), endoscopy (because of GERD) in Nov 2019 revealed another hernia, a stricture and ulcer. Surgeon made it clear he does not repair hernias, and I was not made aware of the stricture (what is that?) and I had no idea about the ulcer. I was put on a prescription PPI. It worked for two months, I had previously been eating 8 - 10 Tums a day, every day. I needed zero immediately.....and then started needing one every so often, he upped the medication to twice a day. That helped for a little while, but I'm back to needing Tums several times a week, although I do not need as many as before. I've been awakened with horrible GERD, coming up into my throat. I never did this before. This is new. I made an appointment with a bariatric surgeon/general surgeon, I'll see him June 17th. I'm not sure what to expect. Everything I've ready, revision to bypass is the best way to fix this for good. I was self pay the first time around, I'm hoping if it comes to that, insurance will cover it. Let me know what you decide. I'd love to know the process with your doctor. Tests etc. Good luck!
  22. You might want a second opinion.
  23. Have you had the revision? If so, what do you think so far? I'm in the same boat you were. Great weight loss, surgery was in 2010, but the GERD has gotten progressively worse. Non-cardiac chest pain, trouble swallowing sometimes, I'm on a prescription PPI and it was helping but I'm back to eating Tums again. When I finally decided to see a doctor I was eating 8 -10 Tums every day. I had no idea it was a bad thing until I read it somewhere!!! I suspect the appointment with the bariatric surgeon next month will give me an idea of what the solution is. I was self pay when I had sleeve surgery. I hope Anthem BCBS will approve and cover whatever he thinks I should do.
  24. I had it every so often, sleeve surgery in June 2010, and now I'm seeing a bariatric surgeon due to a hiatal hernia and GERD. I know that revision may be what he advises.
  25. Please keep us posted on this new journey!!! Prayers for an uneventful recovery!!!
