  1. I'm two weeks away from surgery, and still on the liquid diet. I am not on the instant breakfast regimen, which you may find on Amazon, instead I am on either Premier Protein or skim milk drinks with 100% whey protein. Either way, I find that using cinnamon really helps with the taste. Good luck.
  2. i get a choice between Premier Protein shakes or mixing my own shakes out of 100% whey. I actually like both. I use the whey when I am home, and can mix it in the blender. if i mixing, i add cinnamon, which really cuts down the aftertaste. at this point, I have been at it for more than two weeks. I have actually lost count. I am in a rhythm about it and don't think about it too much. I don't know who that happened. being on the liquid diet is the one experience that has showed me that I can actually do this. For me, the worst thing for me would be to lose and regain. I'm getting used to it. I am spacey has can be, but I suspect as I lose more weight and require less food, this will subside. Thanks everyone. And good luck.
  3. Chelly is right on about what to do. Premier Protein has been my life saver. No fuss. Once I went on the liquid diet - that was it. I had to start thinking as though I'm post op even though I'm not. I'm living mostly on Premier Protein and Cytosport whey powder mixed with 30 cal Almond Milk. But Premier Protein is the true life saver for me. I've had to divorce myself from my romance with eating. You can get the PP from costco. If you aren't a member, do you have a friend who can help you out? I wish you luck. PS My doc told me to lose 30 lbs. I'm almost there.
  4. I have been on the liquid diet for three weeks now. I have three weeks to go. I drink either Premier Protien shakes or 100% whey powder with 8 oz skim milk. I prefer the vanilla as the chocolate is sort of a let down in the chocolate department. I am also allowed raw veggies, but they are tasting like metal. I do eat Jello. On my journey to my RNY I had a hysterectomy and fell in love with jello then. Since I (was) pretty much a foodie, I find this somewhat embarrassing. Now, I will be in search of popsicles. It was the introduction of the Protein shake that really convinced me I will be able to do this new life I am getting. If I can carry shakes around with me, I am certain that I won't be heading for a big sandwich at lunch time. Surgery is 10/28.

    October 2014 RNY-ers :)

I finally have a date. OCTOBER 28. My first contact with my surgeon was November 7, 2013, so it has basically been a year since I started. In that time, I have had uterine cancer, more tests than I ever imagined. And now the time is actually near. I've already been on the liquid diet for three weeks, and I will be on it until the day of surgery. (Three Protein drinks a day and raw veggies 2 x a day) That does not seem like enough food to me, but I am willing. I don't have a lot of information on how this all happens. My pre-op appointment is not until October 24. Meanwhile, I wait. I am so happy about this. I find this website to be extremely helpful. I thank all of you out there for sharing your experiences.
  6. You don't have to start over if you look for another surgeon. You can verify this with your insurance company, but you do not have to have a whole set of tests to start with a new surgeon. The new surgeon might have the same opinion, but it might be worth a try. It would be a shame to have come this far and then be turned back. Good luck to you.

    Medicare requirments

Medicare varies from state to state. For instance, I'm in California. Here Medicare does not pay for a Sleeve Gastrectomy but pays for RNY/Gastric Bypass. On the other hand, the requirements are "easier" to the point where if you meet the requirements of the Center for Excellence, you are there.
  8. Hello: I am not sure if I am putting this in the right place. I am having a problem with my liquid diet. My Surgical Coordinator put me on a liquid diet consisting of either 3 Premier Protein drinks or 4 100% whey Protein/Skim Milk Drinks and two servings of raw vegetables per day. I am 61 years old, and have Type 2 Diabetes, amongst other health problems. I started the diet right away. In the first four or five days, I lost 11 pounds. It was physically very hard on me. I was not hungry, but my energy was seriously diminished. I wrote to her about the situation, also telling her that while I usually love veggies, I could not stand them as they tasted like metal. She wrote me back, asking a few questions, and never got back to me after that. Meanwhile, I became weaker and weaker until I was totally unable to function. Luckily, I had an appointment with my regular health care person, who suspected immediately that my potassium levels had dropped. She put me on potassium immediately and explained that the keto-acidosis can cause Potassium levels to drop. I'm feeling much better now, and still on the same liquid diet. But I am having a serious confidence problem with the Surgical Coordinator, who will be my main contact after the surgery. Since I've been on the journey for a year, and am very close to the surgery, I just don't know what to think. I have confidence in the surgeon, but the Surgical Coordinator is an important player in my journey. Thanks.

    Medicare....No approval needed?

Medicare does vary a bit from state to state. I live in California, and here they do not pay for the Sleeve, so I am having the Gastric Bypass. But the people are right. Good luck.
  10. I love to have parties. It was always my plan that i was going to throw a "Last Supper" potluck where everybody would bring their favorite guilty pleasure. Then, !!AllOfASudden" my surgical coordinator put me on a liquid diet. There was no warning at all. I contemplated waiting a day or two before I started so I could have a few of my favorite meals, but I decided that it was time to stop messing around with food. I went out and got what I needed for this. She told me I'd be on it until the surgery so that is that. I am pretty glad I made that decision. I do look back every once in a while, but I have to do this. I am 61, and it is my last chance.

    Protein powder

I've been on a liquid diet for 5 days. I had the bathroom issue in a serious way for the first few days, and then I felt okay. Then I became constipated. I am taking Fiber. It seems that the liquid diet varies. My liquid diet is Protein drinks made from skim milk and 100% whey powder. I can eat raw veggies, no dressing, 2x a day. I think that once my body got used to being starved, fewer than 1000 cal a day, it settled down. Good luck.

    Pre op liquid diet

I started my liquid diet on Tuesday. It actually caught me quite by surprise. I have been in this process for about one year. In that time I have been diagnosed with Uterine Cancer, had a complete hysterectomy, and have spent a lot of time waiting. In the course of the waiting, I gained five pounds. The surgical coordinator did not like this. I thought a lot about having a last meal before I started the liquid diet, but I decided to just dig right in. My diet is either three Premier Protein drinks or four Protein Drinks made with skim milk and 100%whey protein. the vanilla Premier Protein drinks taste like vanilla pudding. I really like it. I also get two servings of raw veggies, but I think the veggies upset my stomach, so I usually skip those. I've lost 10 pounds in five days. The diet is about shrinking your liver and reducing your belly fat. I believe that it is also about showing that you are dedicated to this process. I have read that the liquid diet is the hardest part. I don't have a surgery date yet, but I go back in a week to have a check up and schedule the surgery. I have been told I will be on the liquid diet until the surgery.

    I am 60

I'm 61. It has been a year since I first began the journey toward having weight loss surgery. In addition to the regular requirements to qualify for surgery, I have had to deal with Uterine Cancer resulting in a complete hysterectomy and then been required to have a colonoscopy ahead of my colonoscopy schedule. I am not sure if my Uterine Cancer would have been had I not been on the WLS path. After the hysterectomy, my surgeon insisted I have the colonoscopy. Guess what? There was a polyp that likely would have turned into cancer. So at this point I am feeling so grateful that they look at every iota of your being before they say okay to the surgery. Finally a year later, I am on the liquid diet. When I go back to check in, they will weigh me and ,hopefully, schedule the surgery. I read in the New York Times that only 50% of the people who start the process make it this far. Im so grateful to be one of them.
