  1. My surgeon asks that you not consume alcohol for the first year. I think some of it is that it is high in calories/sugar, and metabolizes differently with a smaller stomach. Also, there is research that is showing an increase in alcohol dependence after gastric surgery (cross addiction and liquids go through really easy :-). Not to say this would happen to you but something to certainly be aware of. I am actually an alcohol and drug counselor and have seen a number of clients recently who never had a problem with alcohol pre- surgery and now find themselves having problems. I know for me, genetics and now sleeved I'm not sure I want to take the chance anymore. So if you decide to have a glass....have one for me :-)

  2. I think as mothers we have a tendency to put their needs above our own and think of their future first. I raised my daughter, put her through college with little to no debt, helped with a wedding and then.....empty nest hit. Yikes! So......I decided to go back to school and get my Masters degree. Something I had wanted to do for the past 25 years but always found a way to put it off. Well....I just finished my coursework (took 2 years) and will be starting my internship on Monday. A totally new career at age 52 :-) But it's what I have always wanted to do and finally just did it! My fears were much like yours, especially the technology part and being so much older than my classmates. I am sooooo glad I took the chance on myself knowing that I will be a better mom and grandma but more importantly able to care for myself financially in the future because I have done this.

My advice.....keep going! You will be better for it and will secure a future for yourself!

  3. As the time gets closer the "what if's" really kick in. The fear of failure, complications etc. but it's normal! Anything that we aren't 100 percent sure about brings in doubts. I know for myself I was like a rollercoaster; reading too much information on too many sites. The bottom line is, can you afford NOT to do the surgery. FOr me that answer was NO. I wasn't going to lose this weight on another diet and I wanted to be healthy. The complications from high cholesterol, diabetes, blood pressure etc. should scare you as much as the surgery because the reality is those things can kill you. So......search your heart, talk with YOUR surgeon, and make your decision based on all of the statistics and outcomes. I know for me I am SOOO glad that I made the decision to get the surgery! Good luck!

  4. Nolagirl:

I'm with you! Protein, under....water, under but getting better....and Multivitamin....what Vitamin? Makes me vomit everytime! Even the chewables :-( I'm down 42 pounds and feeling much better! Need to get more regular with exercise as well. The way I figure it....any weight loss is weight loss! I have finally decided that I am not going to worry about it too much! Eat what I can, drink what I can and just do the best that I can overall! This isn't going to be a diet for me! Too many of those in the past! I'm learning that it isn't always about perfection but just being "good enough". It's gonna come off one way or another!

Hang in there and just do the best you can!

  5. Jennifer:

I basically started where you are and am basically where you are now. Great to see before and after pictures!! You look at yourself everyday and wonder if you really are LOOKING thinner, not just feeling it in your clothes/other. Guess I'm gonna get my camera out so I can see my progress :-) Looking good!!!!

  6. I had healthpartners and went through Park Nicollet. The longest portion is the phone course...every other week. During that time try and get all of your other appointments (Psych, sleep study, nutritionist set up. I would often try and get a couple on one day.

I started process end of January (took my seminar info. online course so that I didn't have to wait so long) was sleeved on May 20th. So....I think you will be done before the 6 month mark. Then it's about what works out for you surgery wise, work wise etc.

Good luck on starting the process! I am so glad that I didi!

  7. 9 days out.....yep, I was tired after just a little conversation too! Give yourself time! Your body just went through Major surgery and you need to rest and DRINK. Hydrate those chords for sure! :-) I haven't noticed much change in my singing other than I can actually take quicker breathes and fill all the way up and don't feel so exhausted after singing a song lol! More stamina and more room for breath...yeah!!!!

  8. I'm also a musician (singer/vocal coach) and worried about the same thing. Keep doing deep breathing on a regular basis and even vocal exercises for breath (ie. lip buzz) - that's our exercise too! I don't know how far you are out but I'm six weeks and find it much easier to sing now. Remember it will take some time to build back the stamina but it will happen! For me I think it was a little more paranoia that I wasn't going to sound the same after dropping some weight. Welcome to our "new normal" !

  9. I'm a bit over 6 weeks out (May 20th includes 9 day preop). I'm down from 251 high to 219 this morning. Clothes are loose, some actually fit now (you know...the ones you're squeezing into and saying they fit :-) and I actually got into a pair of jeans I had bought but never worn.

Need to be more diligent with Water for sure and exercise. But...I'll take any loss! Wasn't able to lose this weight on any "diet" lol!

    Congrats everyone!

  10. Agreed! Can't compare yourself to others :-) I did the same thing (I'm only 5 weeks out) I was getting on the scale WAY too much and getting discouraged. So....once a week weigh ins is what I am trying to do. Secondly, my nutritionist said that I should only give myself max of 30 minutes for each meal. Giving yourself more time may allow you to eat more than you really need to for that meal. I was doing something like you 45-60 minutes and I was able to eat probably more than I should have too. At this point they say 1/4 cup or 4 oz total is what we should be able to eat. Shortening up my meal time has helped me I think. I can tell when I'm full as well.

Hang in there! Any weight loss is weight loss! My biggest thing is getting all my liquids in!! need that to help the weight move too. :-)
