    negativity

I didn't tell anyone but my husband about my surgery. So glad I did it this way. I told my mom 2 days after and she was supportive and agreed that I shouldn't have told her before because she probably would have worried too much and talked me out of it. I haven't told anyone else. I feel like this is my journey. I don't need anyone else's input.

    Pre-surgery diet

I was told not to do the gummy vitamins because of added sugar. I doubt it is enough to make a difference though.
  3. I had surgery Feb 21 and the swelling in my abdomen has finally gone down enough for me to feel my port. It actually freaked me out because I found it by accident and when I touched it, it hurt like heLL. What has been your experience with your port site?

    Pre-surgery diet

10 days of Protein shakes, broth, sugar free popsicles and Jello for me. I could have 4 4oz shakes throughout the day total. It's to shrink your liver so the surgeon has more room to work. Each person has a different plan though.
  5. I was banded on a Friday and went back to school on Monday, but it was hard. Sitting in a desk chair was not comfortable. I wanted to sleep. I would recommend taking as much time as you think you need, one day at a time. Everyone is different though. Good luck!
  6. I got sick the day before I started my liquid diet 10 days before surgery. I had a bad sore throat, cough, phlegm, muscle weakness. Was diagnosed as viral and went home. 4 days later I went back and I got bronchitis. Was put on a zpak antibiotic and an inhaler for shortness of breath. Was in contact with surgeon throughout. Felt much better and before I was wheeled into surgery the anesthesiologist listened to my lungs and said they were ok. I was freaking out the entire time too, really stressed that I would have to reschedule. Thankfully I didn't. Keep us posted! Feel better!

    I found my port

Cute! I sleep with a pillow on my stomach because my two cats like to sleep there, and jump there too, so I need the extra cushion for now.
  8. Insulin resistance usually involves slight browning of the skin in certain areas. I have this along the with a fatty liver and PCOS. http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/mobileart.asp?articlekey=30653&page=4

    please help! need caloric intake

I add 4oz half and half and 4oz skim milk to my Unjury shake powder and keep it in the fridge for my 2 snacks. I agree with the calorie increase suggestion. It's to help the body stay out of starvation mode. I have been slowly increasing the amount of calories I eat each day. After surgery I started around 300 calories and have built up to about 700. Still in the liquid phase though. I start mushies on Friday.

    Wahooo 2 days in!

We all have different diet plans. For instance, I have been allowed to eat anything that can fit through a straw since 24 hours after surgery. That includes yogurt, oatmeal, and soggy cereal. You should ask your doctor if you are allowed to move phases early (or when you feel you are ready).
  11. Haha! Yep, the metformin was a nightmare for me. I was being treated for infertility because I have PCOS and very abnormal cycles. I took it for about a month until I couldn't take the diarrhea anymore. The extended release was much better and I didn't have that problem anymore. The problem was it was more expensive, but definitely worth the money. I am sort of in the same situation in that I have insulin resistance but not at risk currently for diabetes. No one in my family has it though, and I wasn't pregnant long enough to get gestational diabetes. I was on Atkins for several months and only lost 36 pounds, which is how I knew I was insulin resistant, plus the skin discoloration among other things. My body doesn't process carbs effectively. The metformin helped me conceive, which was a relief.

    Welcome welcome! Congratulations!

    Medications

I use unjury shakes and they don't have hardly any vitamins and minerals. I did my children's chewables during my preop diet.

    Post-Op Liquid Diet?

Not really. In no way did I claim to be an expert at anything. I don't really know where you got that. People before me did the exact same thing and posted their nutrition plans so I thought I would contribute by posting mine so the OP could see the difference between how different doctors prefer different nutritional paths. The way you handled this Karen is very immature. If you had an issue with what I posted in the beginning you should have started with a PM instead of your rude comment. I could have edited my comment to take out whatever you misconstrued as "expert advice" (or at least clarified). But whatever, it doesn't matter. I don't care to discuss this anymore. I am not here to bicker, I am here to learn and give advice when I can help. Good day.

    Post-Op Liquid Diet?

Well then she can publicly speak for herself. I have enjoyed her contribution to the boards as well. Her response to me (with the many exclamation marks) was uncalled for.
  16. Anyone experience this? I was banded yesterday.

    hiccups after I drink water

I have noticed this too as the week went on. It happened when I accidentally gulped my water.

    Post-Op Liquid Diet?

No offense Karen, but you don't need to be rude. I didn't say that my diet plan was perfect and the only correct one for everyone. I said I got my plan from the dietician (who gives the same plan to all lap banders) and asked if the surgeon made the diet plan for the OP. I don't know what your freaking problem is.

    Post-Op Liquid Diet?

My nutritionist has us follow this plan: Preop: 10 day liquid (16 oz total Protein shake throughout the day, broth, sugar free Jello and popsicles) 1st 24 hours postop: Clear Liquids only 1st 2 weeks postop: 3 meals a day (no more than 4oz) that can fit through a straw (without using a straw) with 2 Snacks (protein shake). Soups mostly, but oatmeal and soggy Cereal are ok. Weeks 3-4 postop: Soft diet...basically anything pureed. Adding meats 3 meals a day. 2.5 oz solid and 1 oz nonstarchy veggie or fruit. Canned tuna and chicken, deli meat, eggs, Beans, etc. Snack 2 Protein shakes (4 oz each) 1 month postop: normal diet From a nutrition standpoint, a full 6 weeks of liquids does not seem healthy to me and it's nearly impossible to get enough calories in without becoming malnourished. It does not take the body that long to heal from this procedure. Did you see a nutritionist or just your doctor for the diet info?

    Calories Calories!

Well, I was only allowed two protein shakes a day total 16oz. I could also have some broth. I was around 500 calories a day for 10 days.

    February 2014 bandsters?

I sure hope so! I am usually a stomach sleeper so this whole sleeping on my back thing is torture. My doctor said they attach the port with surgical mesh to keep it in place. I think that's where most of my pain is coming from.

    February 2014 bandsters?

Good so far. I had my surgery a week ago and am still doing liquids. My body really wants regular food though. I ate a bowl of soggy cereal and have had some oatmeal to help with that. My gas pain has subsided quite a bit. I don't feel bloated anymore. The past two days have been the hardest in terms of hunger. As my body recovers from surgery, the swelling in my stomach goes down. I am still having issues sleeping well. I can only sleep on my back because if I try and lay on either side, I feel pressure around my port incision.

    Banded 2/24 and have questions!

Dehydration also causes headaches. Stick to liquids only. Follow what your doctor says. I was banded 2/21 and went back to school on 2/24. It was hard and I hurt because of GI gas pain and port incision pain, but I am a week out now and feeling much better. Feel it out and see how you do.

    I'm hungry

I think you need to increase your protein. Eat it first. You will be hungry because the swelling around your band has gone down. Are you still supplementing with the shakes?
