    Post-Op Sweets

At 2 weeks you'd be best to stick with greek yogurt and Jello. Anything like Cookies or wafers would be pretty tough on your tummy. I'm almost 5 months post-op if I REALLY want something sweet I reach for a piece of fruit. cookies, wafers or anything else, even sugar free, would be like a gateway drug for me and it's just not worth it.

    Head hunger

Skipping meals isn't a good thing. Pretty soon you'll notice that you'll quit loosing weight. Your body will go into starvation mode and it will horde fat. Eat on a schedule every day. There are apps for phones that you can set to remind you to eat. I don't know what your calorie intake should be for sleeve, I had RNY and for the first 3 months I was at 600-800 calories. I've had to increase that to 1000 to keep myself from stalling.

    disappointed

Lauren - Which surgery did you have? What do you eat in a normal day? If you'd supply some information I'm sure there are many others besides myself who can give you suggestions and help. Don't give up - The best thing you did today was reach out here. Hang tight. (You can email me at tlloyd851@yahoo.com for support if you like. I had RNY and have had great success)
  4. I'd call the surgeons office and talk with them about it. Explain everything you said here and see what he/she says. Do they suggest all the additional test? Could they suggest a different sleep study group, or if the results of the sleep study show no apnea, would that be sufficient for them if the vascular surgeon is prepared to approve you? Don't over analyze the situation until you've consulted your surgeon. You'll make yourself nuts and it may not even be an issue.

    Feeling down

Nothing sounds wrong to me You're going to be sore for a few weeks. Your taste buds change after surgery. Where I once craved sugar and fried foods, they now taste horrible. I didn't mind the Protein shakes prior to surgery, now it's a struggle to drink them, fortunately I don't drink them often. I honestly think that the liquid, pureed and soft food stages after surgery by far were harder then my pre-op liquid diet. Take each day as it comes. Every day the soreness will be a little better, keep walking which definitely helps. I tried liquid Vitamins, couldn't get past the smell. I've been chewing gummy vitamins with no problem. At my 3 month check-up my labs all came back perfect. I know some surgeons frown upon gummies and believe they aren't able to be absorbed, but my body has no problem with them, that being said, follow your plan, I'm not telling you do take them. You'll get there, I'm guessing if you've stepped on the scale you haven't seen a big drop. That's because of Water weight and swelling. Try to wait until at the very least 10-14 days out. You should be pleasantly surprised at the results. I've said this more then once and I'll keep repeating myself to anyone who will listen - Stay positive, I believe it's what's made my surgery both successful and fairly easy to date. Best wishes.

    Im so bumbed out

Can you see about doing cobra with the the insurance company? Or look into a private plan
  7. I had a lot of pain in my abdomen, I found that if I wore an elastic support band it helped a lot, it kept things from moving around. See if your surgeon is okay with you wearing one, I found mine at Walgreens and wore it for about 4/5 weeks on and off, depending on what kind of activity I was doing.

    please tell me the truth

At just over 3 months out I had my first slice of pizza after surgery. A 3 x 3 inch square filled my up but it was by far the best pizza in the world. You will eat it again, that and a lot of other things you can't in the beginning.

    Please reassure me

Carol, I just realized that your almost exactly where I started. If all goes as planned, just imagine spending the holidays at around 155 lbs. sounds awesome doesn't it? Now quit doubting, commit fully and live girl.

    Please reassure me

I'm just over 4 months out and I've never regretted my decision. I think a lot of the process is about attitude and staying positive. Please don't let a random comment side line you or cause you some trepidation. You deserve to be healthy and enjoy life and that's just what this will do for you.

    Sleeve or bypass

I also was leaning towards sleeve when I first started out but after doing a lot of research, talking with my pcp and my surgeon I decided to also go bypass (RNY). I had type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure with occasional acid reflux. As of today, just over 4 months out I'm no longer taking any medicine for any of my co-morbitities. I'm down just over 60 lbs, with tons of energy. I've not had dumping, if I eat what I'm supposed to I never should. I take 2 multi Vitamins in the morning and another 2 at night along with 1 Vitamin D. So far this has been the best decision I've ever made for me. Please research diligently before deciding. Only you, your primary and your surgeon can know what is best for you. Best of luck, it's a long process but it has very rewarding results.

    I'm 5'5" , 370# which surgery?

Sorry, but I have to ask - Why would you not recommend RNY to anyone? You've never had it so why rule it out? These are exactly the comments that bother me. I firmly believe you should only be providing information on your experience and NOT commenting on things you know nothing of. I had RNY and have had NO complications. No dumping, nothing. 4 months out, over 60+ lbs lost, no longer taking meds for high cholesterol, high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. I only take 2 multi Vitamins in the morning and 2 at night along with 1 vitamin D capsule, perfect labs. That's what RNY did for me, but it's not for everyone and I realize that. Again, this is a personal choice that should only be based on your facts and only with your surgeon.
  13. Little venting here - I just read yet another post by someone who tells people that if you have RNY you have to take Vitamins every 2 hours, every day for the rest of your life. I don't know who started this crap - I had RNY and only take 2 multi's in the morning and 2 multi's at night along with a teenie tiny Vitamin D capsule. My labs come back perfect, no deficiencies at all. Please, please, please people - if you haven't had RNY, don't say this crap as a way of pushing your unbiased opinion of RNY on others because it's just not true. I don't live off vitamins, I don't eat them for meals, I don't take them throughout the day. And for the record, before I even had surgery I already took them once a day so essentially I only take them one other time a day - certainly not something to consider when deciding on something as important as a surgical procedure.

    Hungry!

Angel it's probably either that your body is craving water/fluids or your bored. It's highly unlikely that your hungry. I know that sounds silly, but most likely what your experiencing is the dreaded "head hunger". Before you reach for food, go for a walk, drink a glass of your favorite liquid or do something to distract yourself. At 4 months out I still don't ever feel hungry, no stomach growling or empty feelings. I eat because it's time to eat, not because my body tells me to. It wasn't always that way though, at around 2 weeks out I also thought I was starving. It's going to take you a bit of time to figure it out, but hang tight, you'll get there.

    In a rut

I don't know if it's an option for you, but my friends mom has fybromyalgia and goes for Water aerobics. She can't rave enough about how much easier it is on her joints and overall body. Also, my zumba teacher has a class she teaches that involves water exercise, she says she has tons of clients who suffer from arthritic and they actually look forward to class because it helps them with their joint pain.

    Couple things I promise

Love your attitude and positive thinking. Both are traits that will make this process a better experience for you. I've always tried to stay positive and have a good attitude/outlook as well and I know it's served me well. Being prepared for the what if's is important, planning will help you succeed. There are tons of subjects you can search for here and a lot of other sites to hook up to. try them all, you'll see which are a good fit for you. Best of luck to you.

    I'm 5'5" , 370# which surgery?

I agree with rodeomom969, it's something that should be decided between you and your surgeon. Do a lot of research, both here and elsewhere on the internet. Each surgery has it's reasons for being a better option for everyone. I had type 2 diabetes and bouts of acid reflux so for me RNY/bypass was the best option. 4 months out, 60+ pds lost and both are a thing of the past. Others that don't have issues like mine go with sleeve or banding. Please consult with a WLS professional to assist you with your decision. All too often we see people interjecting their person opinions and speculations to try to sway someones decision, you need to decide based on facts that pertain to you specifically. Good Luck, no matter what you choose you've found a great place for support.
  18. Thanks for the feed-back and support on the subject. I don't normally post negative things, but this particular subject irks me so bad. If someone wants to provide input, make is correct information, not some contrived malarkey to try to sway someones decision. That's not what we're here for. (I do find it interesting that since I called her out yesterday she's been mysteriously quiet. Better that then her other choice.)

    Vitamins

I absolutely agree - If my labs ever came back with a deficiency I'd address it with whatever is needed.

    I'm 5'5" , 370# which surgery?

Beachgurl84, Please don't be offended, but I feel compelled to clarify some of your beliefs about RNY. - First I'll preface by stating that I had originally "thought" that the sleeve would be best for me but after much research and conversations with both my surgeon and my PCP it was the final decision of mine to have bypass. I had RNY on March 17th of this year. Prior to surgery I took 2 gummy multi Vitamin in the evening. Since surgery all I added was talking them in the morning along with a teenie tiny Vitamin D capsule. I don't live off vitamins, I don't take them every 2 hours, there's no maintenance program to follow at all and doesn't impact my quality of life and it's certainly not an inconvenience. I don't know who gave you this information about having to take vitamins every 2 hours, but it's simply not true. With my twice daily multi vitamins and vitamin D my labs come back perfect every time my blood is checked. That being said I'd like to ask you as kindly as possible to please refrain say these kinds of things to anyone who is trying to figure out what's best for them. I'll also mention that the "re-routing" of intestines as you refer to it for me is no more scary then having 3/4 of my stomach permanently removed. My stomach is 100% intact and is still 100% functioning, it just meets up with the food a little lower down but that's really not a big deal. I'm 4 months out and down 60 lbs. I'm off diabetes and cholesterol meds and I couldn't be happier or have more energy. Would someone find the same results with the sleeve surgery - absolutely and I fully believe that they should make that decision for themselves without my inputting information about surgeries I know nothing about. That's why I, as a post-op patient only provide my personal experience and don't speculate based on what I've heard. I hope you understand, I truly don't mean to offend, I just don't like miss-information being put out there.

    Vitamins

I buy the fusion multi Vitamins (gummies) at Walgreens or Jewel. I take 2 in the morning and 2 at night along with a tiny Vitamin D capsule, that's it. My labs come back perfect. There are surgeons who recommend taking Flinestone vitamins, they also work fine. You don't need to spend a fortune to get sufficient sources of nutrients. If you compare ingredients between the standard (fusion) vitamins and the more expensive Bariatric Advantage vitamins they match up almost one for one. I would add that if you have problems with a vitamin deficiency you should maybe take a specialty type of vitamin but if your eating well, it's probably not necessary to go to spendy.

    I'm 5'5" , 370# which surgery?

I would add to those who think that anyone with RNY spends their days taking Vitamins, it's not true. I take 2 gummy multi's in the morning and 2 at night along with a single tiny Vitamin D capsule at night - that's it, nothing more, nothing less. My labs come back with perfect results. I don't need to or have to take them ALL day long. Just sayin...............

    Is it too late ?

If you're not comfortable with your decision, I'd call your surgeons office ASAP and talk with them. Worst case, it may delay your surgery if they have to wait for a change with your insurance, but better that then to be unhappy with your currently scheduled procedure.

    I'm 5'5" , 370# which surgery?

Michelle, each surgery has it's benefits and downfalls. I think you need to do your research, talk with your surgeon and PCP and decide for yourself which is best for you. Also, see what your insurance will cover and what they won't. That could have a huge impact on your decision. Because I had High Cholesterol, High Blood Pressure, Type 2 Diabetes, a tendency to get reflux, it was decided by me with input from surgeon and my primary that the best surgery for me was Bypass. I'm 4 months out, 60+ lbs down and only taking meds for High Blood pressure (probably only for another day or two after a much needed conversation I have to have with my PCP tomorrow about being light headed more and more which I believe is because of low blood pressure). Remember, you don't need to decide right away either, all of the procedures require all of the same pre-requisites so you have time before you need to decide. Make sure it's the right thing for you. Good luck to you, i will say - This will by far be the best thing you could ever do for yourself, I know it was for me.

    Surgery TOMORROW!

You're going to do fine. Worrying won't do any good, being positive is key. Stay on program with your food, keep drinking your fluids and walking and the weight will do what it's supposed to do - go away. Best wishes - see you on the losers bench.
