  1. The difference

Since surgery on January 9th, I have lost 53 lbs. When I brush my hair after a shower, it looks like I lost enough hair to make a toupee. I keep forgetting to take my Vitamins, which I am trying to work on. But my clothes are falling off of me and I haven't felt so good about myself in decades. I might even buy a new outfit and treat myself to a day of getting my hair and nails done for my 10th wedding anniversary.

  2. Bummer! I gained 3.5 pounds. I have a Protein Shake in the a.m. An egg in the afternoon, and for dinner I have a piece of chicken, steak, or hamburg. I'm lactose intolerant so it's hard to find safe foods to eat. I'm working out everyday. I'm confused as to why I'm gaining.

It could be muscle gain from the weight loss, exercise, and Protein intake. It could also be Water weight. I am constantly battling with water weight. If I don't take a diuretic, I gain 5-15 pounds in water. I am hoping this stops once I drop more weight. If you are really concerned, talk to your medical support group.

  3. Well, I had surgery on January 9th. I have lost 49 lbs since surgery with me losing 118 lbs in the past year. I am eating pretty much what I want within reason while staying within the sugar/fat/protein triangle. I even have small baby spinach salad loaded with meat and a cap-ful of dressing. My problem that I have been having has been dizzy spells, almost fainting, and fatigue on a daily basis. I talked with my PCP and GI Nutrition team. They ruled out deficiencies and hypoglycemia. I have been referred to a cardiologist because since surgery my blood pressure has gotten really low as well as my pre-surgical EKGs came back with sinus bradycardia and an arrhythmia. So I have to find out what is going on. I find it funny that I am losing weight to get healthy and now I might have to get a pacemaker in order for my heart to speed up and pump harder in order to be healthy. But other than that I find myself walking more, trying out yoga, and signing up for 5K races. I feel like a new person.

  4. Hopefully someone will come back now that it is April. No posts since January. I had my surgery on 1/13 and am feeling great - not too happy with weight loss (I guess I thought it would just fall off. I started the program @ 242, day of surgery 231.5 and now weight 196. I know I am not getting enough Protein so started drinking shake this morning to make sure and have read from others that this helps in weight loss. Seem to be at a standstil for the past week. Any thoughts?

I find myself at a standstill after every 10-15 pounds. I lose roughly a pound a day for a few weeks, and then around the time that PMS starts it stops. But once the monthly event is over, it starts dropping again. I guess my body can't handle two "traumatic events" at one time. I have started drinking a Protein Shake very morning. I have found that it is easier to make sure I have Breakfast and it helps keep me under 1000 calories, sometimes I hit 1200 calories. My nutritionist says to aim for between 800-1000 calories a day. But of course I am heavier than you (starting wt 448 surgery weight 379 current weight 334). But I am happy that it is coming off without any major problems. Great job losing!!!

  5. It is good to see that our group is losing weight after their plateaus. I hope that everything is going well. My plateau lifted almost 2 weeks ago. I have been losing not quite a pound a day. I have lost 11 pounds in 13 days. But I have run into vertigo. My doctor has put me on anti-vertigo meds while she waits to get my blood results back. But she did say it is most likely due to losing weight so quickly combined with my low blood pressure and low heart rate. I have been taking my Vitamins and eating as I should (roughly 900-1200 calories a day with at least 60 grams of protein). I am also getting exercise using Zumba Rush at home or my recent purchase of beginners yoga. I am just hoping that the vertigo goes away soon. I am beginning to think that I lose roughly 15-20 lbs and then hit a plateau so my body catches up before it crashes. Anyone else suffer from almost debilitating dizzy spells?

  6. It's hard not to get on the scale. I have cut it down to once a week. As a slow loser I'm sure it would be so much better not to weigh for maybe every 2 or 3 weeks but even in weight watchers you weigh once a week. I don't have a scale I weigh at my friends so I am definitely not too obsessive about it. It's just when I finally do go on and see no change or very little change after hard work it is confusing. I know you lose the most in the first couple weeks so if that is the case I'm surely in trouble. On the flip side I can't do anything about it now. I just have to keep my head up and keep pressing on but I thank God I have a place to vent about it. A place were I may find others who can relate. I'm also wondering if there is anyone out there who has only lost 13 lbs 6 weeks out. Maybe I want to find others so I can assure myself I'm not all alone. That it's not so abnormal. It helps to vent but then I go back to the gym and I pick myself up by the boot straps and press on . . . Until I weight again the following week.

I have lost 36 lbs in 8 weeks. There are weeks that go by that I don't seem to lose a pound. I have lost 5 lbs in the past 3 weeks. But I don't worry about it to much now that I have some objectivity. I went to Walmart to try on clothes for the heck of it. I was able to fit into size 3X (22/24) JMS stretchy capris. I haven't fit into 22/24 clothes since before my first child was born almost 15 years ago. So even though the amount on my scale hasn't gone down much in the past month, my non-scale victories (NSVs) continue to increase. I can cross my legs, my bras that I bought back in September are way to big on me, and I can fit into clothing ranging from 22/24 stretchy to 26/28 comfortable. So even if the scale isn't budging use a tape measure to see how many inches have been shaved off once a month. Or Celebrate the small yet consequential NSVs that come along. Focus on the positive changes and it makes it all more worth while.

  7. I have been cleared for full diet and I am down a few more pounds since my last check up. A total of 102 lbs lost in the past 11 months with 36 lbs lost since surgery (according to my nutritionist). Woot.... If I keep this up I will reach my goal of 250 lbs (10 lbs a month) by the end of the year. I am getting back into Zumba and look forward to getting the new Zumba with the riser to tone and dance at the same time.

  8. I am beyond frustrated...I have been getting my exercise and my caloric intake spawns a daily, "Your calories are too low" warning from MyFitnessPal because I don't get at least 1200 calories in a day. But I am in a dreaded plateau and have been for weeks. I am ready to cry. And having to rely on prescription "water pills" doesn't help matters. Sorry just had to vent. Anyone have any advice to help me through this either to push past it?

  9. Hi all. I have been doing great up to this point. I am four weeks out. The last two days I have been unable to have a bm. Well today, all I had was my Protein Shake at breakfast, and Water, then right before lunch I got sooo sick I couldn't go, then finally started to, then I started to vomit foam. This all went on for over an hour! It was miserable! Has this happened to anyone else? Was it just the Constipation? Can I take stool softeners this early out? I don't want to go through that again!!

Miralax and such is safe to use because it doesn't have any stimulants in it to cause issues. My surgeon said that in the beginning there may be days between BM. A bit TMI but even 7 weeks out I go maybe once every three or four days. Because our amount of food has significantly smaller than what it used to be our body has to adjust.

  10. Ladonna, I was up and about after the anesthesia wore off and I was able to stay wake for more than a few minutes. I haven't been able to get to a gym or even walk like I want to but I have been getting in exercise whenever I can. I usually get up and dance with my kids or even dance while doing dishes. I am at home right now but in April I go back to school to finish my last few terms before I get my degree. Even then the plan is to walk and walk and walk. I know that as a nurse you are on your feet pretty much the whole shift. So I would suggest that when you do get a change to sit down, such as charting, that you do some chair exercises to keep from locking up as well as give you an extra boot of energy. You can find a bunch of them online. It isn't more for burning the fat off but to tone as you go along. Once this blasted snow melts around me, I plan on taking my daily 5K walk and expanding it. Hopefully by the end of summer, I can run part of it. But right now I am happy with my weight loss. So far since my surgery on Jan 9th, I have lost 30 lbs. I am on a plateau but only because every woman's monthly enemy is visiting. But that will not discourage me. I am still dancing and once I get some things taken care of, getting my daily dose of Zumba.

  11. I just placed an order for a nectar sample pack. I am hoping it lives up to its hype. I have been using the Walmart version of crystal light but it would be awesome to have the great Water flavoring with the added bonus of Protein. It would be easier to drink my Protein in my Water when I am on the go then have to worry about packing a snack when running errands or when I got back to school next term. But good news is that I fit into 26/28 sweats. I haven't been able to do that in years. When I started my journey to a better me I was fitting into 38/40. Woot! And I can cross my legs (somewhat).

  13. Has anyone saw the infomercial for bacon bowls? I was wondering I it worked with turkey bacon. Pack it with lettuce and Tomato and have a blt without the bread or guilt. I cannot wait to start introduce solids back in and change it for the better.

I also have my first appointment Thursday and I am very excited. Never thought that I would e excited to go see someone that is going I tell me what I can an cannot eat.

How is everyone doing! How is the weight loss?!

I have seen the commercials and it does work with turkey bacon. I plan on buying that soon for the same idea...breadless BLTs or even Breakfast bowls with eggs, tomatoes, and other yummy veggies. I have lost 26 lbs so far and I am happy with that...it is roughly 5 lbs a week (tomorrow is week 5 for me). It is harder since I can't do mush walking like I used to because of this wretched snow but once I get my treadmill, all bets are off. So for now I just get my leg stretching done while shopping once a week for a few hours.

  14. Hey ladies. It has been going well here in NE Pennsylvania despite the snow. I will be ordering my treadmill this weekend so I have something to do when I am itching to go for a long walk. I am down a total of 26 lbs since surgery. Some days it seems like I don't lose anything but then I remember to take my furosimide (Lasix) in order to pee like a normal person. Anyone have issues with that? I drink my 64 ounces a day, but if I don't take my Water pill I just don't "go". I have also learned that my new pouch is sensitive to seasonings. I tried to eat a mexican chicken tortilla Soup and I was in pain from the spices. So I bought some new Soups that are a bit blander but have good flavor. But I also realized that my full button is actually the stuck feeling I get. So now I know.

  15. I was cleared a few days ago to start eating lean meat and cheese but it hurt too much. It felt like it was stuck in my throat. So I am back to pureed/liquids for a few days. I think I pushed myself to far last week (pushed the envelope foodwise) and my stomach is rebelling. So I am going to try it out going back to liquids/purees for a week and try merging into meats/cheese again next week. Yesterday was bad. I barely got 700 calories and only 16 grams of Protein. I could only drink so I had some gatorade and Soup because the thought of a Protein Shakes was not appealing. I had no appetite and I didn't want to force it. Today will be better.

  16. As of my one month post-surgical check up, I am officially 360 lbs and I have been cleared to eat lean, moist meats and cheese. I also start my twice daily chewable vitamins. Woot. Next check up is in a month when I can be cleared for veggies, fruit, and carbs plus B12 shots and calcium/Vit D. Now to get my treadmill so I can get some real exercise. I have been dancing around the house with my iPod because the snow won't go away.

Have you been using the treadmill? I'm 2 weeks out, and wondering when I can start. We have snow also, I don't have anywhere to walk. I can't really drive at this point in th snow. If it clears up I may try SAMs club for a walk on Wednesday, but we are supposed to get more snow!

I haven't bought my treadmill yet. I am going to get one by the end of the month. I am waiting for our tax refund to buy it.

  18. Hi All. I'm 2 1/2 weeks post op. I walked around and am finally up to doing normal routines. I pushed it too hard to soon with the walking and made my stomach sore.

I had a hard time but am finally learning what is "full". My life felt better after the JP tube was pulled.

Liquids are going down easier but I still can't handle more than 2oz at a time of food and I'm up to 3 sips of liquid then rest.

I had the bypass with a hernia repair. There's a slight difference in the recovery but nothing major. In fact I didn't get any of the common nausea or throw up side effect that other have. I wonder if the hernia repair helped.

I try to eat stage 3 foods but it's only made me really sick to my stomach. So I'm sticking with the puréeds. I'm looking forward to the long road of health and recovery.

Best of luck to those who are going for surgery. It's been the best decision I've made and I hope it's yours too. :)

I am 3 weeks post op from lap RNY and an umbilical hernia repair. I found that when taking walks I need my abdominal binder that the hospital sent home with me. It helps support my new upper GI system while I get some exercise. If I don't use it, I am hobbling back to my van hunched over and holding my stomach in agony.

  19. Got out of the hospital Tuesday. Feel so much better. I'm now on pureed foods. I'm having trouble getting in 64 ounces of liquids everyday on top of 75g Protein. I am to the point the Bariatric Advantage shakes are now making me gag and I can't tolerate them. I went to sams club and got the Premier Protein shakes and I can drink those without gagging. I have a g tube and I can put shakes Water and meds in it so that helps. Right now I'm taking liquid meds and those make me gag too so I've been putting them thru my g tube. I will have the g tube until at least 8 weeks post op. I had an open rny and I'm surprised that I didn't have much pain with it. I mean the 1st 3 or 4 days was bad but I didn't take pain meds after 5 days post op. I was down 23 pounds at the Dr office yesterday but could be more they said because I was in the hospital and had a lot of iv fluids. I had pancreatitis and a uti but am so much better. Doing good now just working on getting in all my Proteins and fluids.

I am glad that you are out of the hospital and doing well. I think we all struggle at some point to get the water and protein into our tiny tummies. And kudos on the 23 lbs!!!

  20. I get between 800 and 900 calories a day. Mostly because I drink 2 Protein drinks (8-12 ounces of fat free milk with a scoop of protein powder which is 190-240 calories each) a day plus cottage cheese (110 calories for 1/2 cup) plus the cream Soup or Jello in between meals. I try to have 6 small meals but end up with 5 usually. My doctors frown when I don't get at least 90 grams of protein (they bumped me up from 60 grams last week).

How in the world do you get 90 grams of protein?? I'm having trouble with 50.

It is hard some days but my protein drink gives me anywhere from 29-33 grams of protein depending on the amount of fat free milk I use. The cottage cheese gives me 13 grams for every 1/2 cup. I add my unflavored protein to my other fluids so it gives me an additional 24 grams of protein on top of what is in my cup. Today I finished with 98 grams of protein from 5 small meals most of which was my protein enhanced milk.

  21. I avoid applesauce because the amount of natural sugar in it for the small amount. But I can have cottage cheese and eggs on top of the liquids. On Monday, I will be moved to lean meats (crossing fingers). I am going to Celebrate with a turkey burger patty for dinner. I have missed my jalapeno jack turkey burgers (I never eat it with a bun or bread). In April I get veggies and carb rich foods like bread and rice.

Where do you get jalapeño jack turkey burgers, they sound yummy.

It is made by Jennie-O...I find it at Walmart. It is delicious. 250 calories and like 27 grams of Protein for one 1/3lbs patty. It needs no seasoning or Condiments. It is a standalone meal.
