when I was a diabetic I had metformin prescribed for me. it made me very sick and I never lost a lb . now that I have lost 60 lbs I do not need medication. thank God.

      fit2Bme2014

@sharpie, while taking the medication, did you make any lifestyle changes such as reducing your carbohydrate intake? Still trying to figure all of this out.

      Dr-Patient

Early last yr, I took Metformin before I even thought about WLS. I dropped from 271.2 to ~ 256 just with that. It does help (or, usually does for) most people. but follow your Dr's orders.

  2. I find it less helpful to hear about the journey of somebody who's under 250 and having the surgery. I've seen so many people just under 200 pounds having the surgery and I am horrified. I guess everybody's journey and reasonings are different. It just seems like such a drastic surgery and if I were 200 pounds I would be thankful… At least this point my life. But just to lose 50 pounds, I have a hard time wrapping my head around it.

Here's my reality: I have just about every co-morbidity on the list. Every one. I was 210 pounds and being eaten alive by my autoimmune diseases. This surgery has saved me--the gut hormones caused a lot of my health issues. So I get what you're saying, and I tend to be a very judgmental person, but I've come to understand that we all got here for one (or several) very personal reasons. Hope this helps! :)

Maybe suggest a new forum? I personally have learned from all forums and don't find that the type of surgery makes much difference. As far as heavier people I get jealous on how fast they drop the weight but eventually they will be where I am ;-p

    4. fit2Bme2014

      fit2Bme2014

Kata13, there is a group that's designated for different weight groups. And, I do visit those. While you get discouraged by those heavier than you losing weight quicker, I get discouraged when I see posts about people losing very slowly. And, then I remember to go to the side and see if I can tell what their starting weight was...and pray the reason is just because they started at a lower weight than someone like me, and that it's not something worse like the sleeve just not working...

  3. Wishing that I didn't feel like looking in to wls as a copout. I should be able to do this myself, shouldn't I. And, I have, really sucessfully...just haven't been able to maintain it. Smh

Hi Fit… I've had the same thoughts, that is until I did the psych eval. The wonderful doctor and I had a conversation and she told me this:

"You're an educated woman, you're smart, you're logical ~ you've got a good head on your shoulders and if your weight was a logical issued, you'd have solved this problem long ago. But it's not ~ it's a very complex hormonal and emotional issue. The surgery will be the tool to kick-start your success and then your...

Wow! That's a really good response from your doctor. It's not to know that more and more doctors are taking this seriously and not just looking at us at fat, lazy slobs.

Yeah I used small spoons to eat for the first few months. It just helped me slow down because I eat so fast.

      fit2Bme2014

Wonderful! I picked up a colorful package of 10, at Walmart. I started using them last night. It really does seem to be helping me slow down. What other PostOp eating tips do y'all have?

    4. StephanieRR

      StephanieRR

Just eat slow and listen to your body. If you feel full and you still have an ounce left, leave it. That was the most challengeing for me. I still battle that. I take a 4oz serving and feel full sometimes after 3oz. Then I will have a whole conversation in my head rather I should just finish it since it was such a small portion to start with. I usually end up leaving it.

  5. It's weird. Other sleeve patients don't seem to want to hear the I've had it as easy as I had it. No vomiting, minimum nausea, able to do self-care: clothe myself, I get off the pot myself, in and out of the shower myself, make my own meals myself. It's almost like it's a badge of honor to have had some sort of complication or malaise after surgery. No wonder the nurses made the comment like they did. No wonder they were so impressed and so surprised I was getting out of bed and walking without prodding and prompting. Smh

Thanks, you two!! I Inking going to go ahead and keep my calories around 500 even though the surgeon said 1200. Didn't seem to be losing much at 1200, which is been the case for last few years. Super emotional for some reason this afternoon and want to eat so bad that I could gnaw my hand off.

  7. Saw my surgeon again today, I've lost 15# of the 20# the surgeon requested (I don't have an insurance mandated amount to lose). The CT scan that was done of my hernia actually shows a good liver, so she's not worried about that, however... Blood tests not great. My PPT is elevated. It could be from the aspirin I take or it could be that I clot too much. Need to retest and get a referral to hematology. The test also shows I have H. pylori and have to do some round of meds for...

so pick a spot walk to it for about a week, then a little further, so on and so on..BABY STEPS..then WHAM! you look around and holly sh*t, your 3 miles from home...lolololol

      fit2Bme2014

Dee_1111, I hate even saying this, because it feels like a copout and a really bad excuse, but I have severe stenosis in my low back and walking any distance causes my legs, specifically the right one, to go numb. It helps when I can use a shopping card so I can lean on it and lean forward a bit. I'm thinking the pool might be a good thing to try. :) just feeling frustrated and whiney. Lol.

  9. With 15 days to go, I've lost the 20# required by my surgeon! The rest of the way they'll lose before surgery, will be a bonus!

Doing my best to do so. I think lowing my calories to 600 cal a day is kinda messing with me. I've been extremely tired and light headed. Ugh! Surgeon was up set when I told her I lowered it that far. She was worried it might kill my metabolism. I'm just doing everything I can to lose weight before surgery.

  10. My praying friends, I ask that you say a little prayer for me and my surgical team. I'm having a procedure done this morning. I really appreciate it...and all of you.

Its important for your liver. keep losing.. the more the better to shrink your liver and make it easier for the surgeon to move around in there

  15. Scared about Self-Sabotage and how to deal with Head-Hunger. I watched an episode of, “My 600# Life” and it seemed as if the gal was TORMENTED by the Head-Hunger. There are times when there is nothing in the house and I wanna gnaw my hand off so I find anything, even if it’s something I normally don’t eat, to eat, to make my head shut up!

    1. Carlotta1

      Carlotta1

Keep busy...drink plenty of water. Head hunger lessens as time goes on. At least mine has since I have the sleeve.. Pre sleeve. ..yes it is tough. But if u r rep hired to lose some weight prior to surgery ..then persevere.

    2. fit2Bme2014

      fit2Bme2014

Thanks. My surgical appointment is in a few days, and knowing that I will have to start my pre-op diet, the head-hunger is off the charts! I've eaten so much to day that my tummy huts, and still my head is like, "more, more my precious, more!" Smh

  16. It just hit me.... While I've been excited that I have my first appointment with my surgeon, and I'm anticipating being given my pre-op diet and appoints scheduled... she still may not 'approve' me. That would be devistating.

  17. Oops! I thought I was supposed to start the PreOp diet. I only have to be on it five days not seven; I actually don't need to start this until Wednesday, but a couple of extra days of liver shrinking won't hurt, right? Lol!

    1. Christian Zaccone

      Christian Zaccone

right.. surgeon needs to be able to move it around and less chance of it getting damaged.

  18. Just did the Biggest Loser, CardioBlast warm-up...yes, warm-up and I'm worn out. Due to health issues, I have little balance or stamina and it's difficult to stand straight without my back/legs going out. It wasn't longer than 5 min. Feeling pretty low abt myself right now. :(

      Mikee57

I am in the same boat with you, I have had my knee replaced and still can't even walk far, so this is going to be a long road but I am ready for it...we got this fit2Bme2014 we've got this!!! Let's think positive then positive things will surely happen 5 minutes at a time!!! :)

Thanks! I ended up finding somebody to go swimming with me. Unfortunately where I live, we always have to have somebody with us. I managed to get in about 30 minutes.

  19. I miss the girl who could spend hours in the gym and take a 3-4 mile walk afterwards. I hate knowing that even after I lose weight, because of damage to my spine, I'll probably never meet that girl again. That's not going to deter me from looking for her. I'm just very disappointed in the person I have about myself to become.

I have had so many set backs since wls. first I fractured my wrist and arm. I still have to wear a splint and I did this last july. I also had to have the gallbladder removed. it is discouraging. but you don't want to make things worse. rest for now and heal. exercise the upper body for now. I wish you well and hope you heal quickly

Hi fit2 bme2014 I did the exact same thing at work I fell on some ice and I am on crutches, I met with my surgeon and they are still willing to do my surgery because I can still walk on crutches he did say if I'm still on crutches for the surgery I will have a walker instead if crutches at the hospital. I agree with terrydumont46 keep exercising your upper body until surgery and watch what you eat so you don't gain wright due to limited movement .

  22. Busy thjs weekend; preparing my life for surgery in a few weeks.

It's taking a bite, eating it for a minute, taking another bite, eating it for a minute, doing this 3 times, and then waiting 5 minutes before the next round of 3 bites. Frustrating for a wolfer downer of food like me.

Sorry... I'm preop. They put me on 1200 cal diet and I wasnt losing, so I switched it to 500 to 600. My surgeon was quite upset with me about that. She says I will burn out my metabolism before surgery. However, after surgery I'm going to be having so few calories, right? Why won't that burn out my metabolism? I don't necessarily "feel" like eating. And want to continue losing until surgery. I feel really off today. I have five more days left of the anabiotic pack for h. pylori, maybe it's the medicine.
