who cares if it is the easy way out?

Maybe (big maybe) it is an easier way to loose weight and keep it off but it's also the only way that is statistically successful. 4 of my close friends who are significantly overweight have had this surgery. They've also had long term success even when they don't follow the diet as well as they should. 2 of my friends have opted for diet instead. One lost 150 lbs while she stayed home with her son. She lived in the middle of nowhere and didn't have access to unhealthy foods at a moments notice and she had time to work out. She still had to work her ass off every second of everyday. As soon as she went back to work, she started gaining. The other friend has followed a very strict diet for 18 months. She's lost 75lb and has been stuck for months even though she works really hard. But it's been all that time and she still has at least another 100 lbs to go. Both of these girls were/are obsessed (like in a clinical burgeoning on eating disorder way) with their diets every second of every day. I can't live like that. It's not my personality. I could not do what they did on my own and I admire them for it. And unfortunately it doesn't have the same long terms results WLS has. I know that RNY patients will face many of the same issues that they face, but we have one extra tool in our shed. Neither journey is easy, they are both long, difficult roads, and you have to pick the one that works best for you.
  2. 15 lbs. but they pumped me so full of gas and fluids I gained it all back in the hospital.
  3. I took my time with everything but it was 9 months for me from my first appointment until my surgery. I could have sped it up and got that down to 8 but I was ok with the amount of time it took.

    March 2014 Surgery!

I made it! My surgery was Tuesday at 8 am. I woke up in a lot of pain and pretty disoriented but I once I got some pain meds in me I felt better. The pain wasn't bad at all and I haven't been hungry since I woke up. I had some minimal complications with my heart wanting to beat at 150-160 but they got me well hydrated and that resolved it self. The most painful part of the whole thing was when my IV blew today and filled my arm with magnesium. I'm home now. Working on setting up meals for the week. I lost 15 lbs on my preop diet but I've gained it all back in fluid. The good thing is that I'm sure I've still been burning fat so I expect with in a few days I'll be on my way to losing again.

    Feeling good

My surgery was yesterday. I woke up in a lot of pain but once they got that under control I've been feeling much better than I expected. My heart was racing last night. It was staying at 130-160 all night so they did a ct and didn't find any issues. I've done my swallow test and it went well so now I'm just waiting for my ounce of jello.
  6. Try premiere protein. I've tried a ton of different ones leading up to my surgery and I like those the best. They are about $20 for 12 at Sams club if you have a membership. They also have a snack size version that's smaller, but still has 18 grams of protein. Those are $20 for 18. Have you talked to your doc about something to help you with the naseusa?
  7. Hi! I just turned 27 and my surgery is on Tuesday! Welcome to the forum. I'm still pretty new here too. If you have any specific questions I'll be happy to try and answer them for you.

Confessions of a Pre Op Shopaholic

I'm 3 days preop. So far some things I've bought and loved or at least tolerated well: Premier Protein drinks in chocolate from Sams club $20 for 12 Premier Protein in vanilla with 31 grams from Trader Joes or the Vitamin shop $2-3 each A small Blender Bottle from Walmart. It says it's 20 oz but it really only holds about 12. $5 Samples of syntax nectar protein from the vitamin shop $2 Unsweetened apple sauce Cottage cheese About 5 pairs of jeans in my favorite style in every size from a 22 to a 12 New sheets and a body pillow so I'll be comfortable when I get home. I use my fitness pal to keep track of what I've been eating on my preop diet and run keeper for work outs. I'm hoping to buy a fitness tracker soon. I'm waiting to see what the next gen of smart watches look like before I decide on one. I'm going to go check out this Popsicle maker ASAP. Thanks for the tip!

    The waiting game!

The wait between my final appointment and scheduling my date was nerve racking. I just researched as much as I could and started buying some new clothes here and there. Once I got my date I started buying Protein and trying recipes. My surgery is on Tuesday and I'm not nervous but I am questioning myself. I know I'm doing the right thing though. I'm sure I'll be a nervous wreck by Monday. My advice to you would be to get your house ready for when you're going to come home. I had to rearrange some furniture. And rest as much as you can. I've had quit a few restless nights so I've been going to bed early when I can. Good luck with everything! I hope you get your days soon.

    March 2014 Surgery!

I bough bullion cubes to make broth. I like 1 chicken cube, one beef cube, and some onion powder. I bought a couple of types of Popsicles and a lot of yogurt. I bought some cottage cheese tonight because I was desperate for something different. I bought a couple of kinds of juice but I limit how much of that I have since it's high on the carbs.
  11. I'm on day four of my preop liquid diet. I've not had that many cravings. Luckily one of my medications makes me kind of nauseous and suppresses my appetite which has helped. I have had almost a constant headache and I feel almost flu like, tired and achy. I can deal with all that though. But the weird thing is my sense of smell has been on over drive. Has this happened to anyone else? In my bathroom I can smell the medicine my husband took before he left for work 8 hours ago. I can smell my glass of orange juice that's sitting next to me and I think I smelled everyone's lunch with in a 30 foot radius at work the past few days. It's not really annoying, just kind of funny. If someone didn't know I was getting ready for this surgery, they'd probably thing I'm pregnant. Has this happened to anyone else?

    Pre-op diet blues

I feel you. It's really hard. I haven't had the cravings too bad but I just feel like crap. It does make me constantly question if this is what I want. My arms feel so weak. Today was my last day of work though so I'm hoping I'll be able to rest a few days before my surgery, on Tuesday and I'll fell better.

    Suprised

I know I'm going to have a drain but I can't for the life of me remember if anyone at my surgeons office actually told me that. I've had 3 friends that had the surgery with the same surgical group and they had them. At first I was annoyed at the thought of it but then it was explained to me that if you have a leak you can get very sick if you don't know it. If you start getting weird stuff in your drain they may put you back in the hospital for a few day and not let you eat but it will probably heal on its own. So I'll take the drain I guess.

my 600 lb life on TLC

I've never watched it before but tuned in tonight for Tara's episode. Do you think they really took her into surgery that fast? Does the show normally show the full process, all the testing and preop stuff? I suppose she could have done that in the two month period. I'm just wondering if that's what really happened or if it was sped up for tv magic and drama.

    March 2014 Surgery!

Mine was fairly simple. I filled out the questionnaire. It asked the same questions multiple times with slight different phrasing. So watch out for that. For example it might say "I often take illegal drugs" on one question and they next may be "i rarely take illegal drugs." Talking to the psych was pretty simple. He asked questions about addiction, to see if you're likely to develop other addictions ECT., family history hobbies, just basic stuff. There were some off the wall questions like "what's your favorite type of chocolate chip cookie." Good luck with it! I was nervous, but it was nothing.

    March surgery

I have united health care. It only took a couple of days for them to approve it but it still took a few weeks from my final appointment until I could actually schedule my date while I waited for paper work to go back and forth.

    March 2014 Surgery!

My employer offers BCBS and the approval process is a lot faster. I have several coworkers who've had it done in just a few months. I'm covered under my husbands insurance because it's cheaper and the coverage is better but they requires 6 months of weigh-in. I took an extra month on top of that to get everything done and then it took a few weeks to get my approval and schedule my date so that put me at almost 10 months when it was all said and done.

    March 2014 Surgery!

Wow that's really fast! My first appointment was in early May.

    March surgery

March 4th! Starting my preop diet now. Good luck everybody.
  21. I'm still preop. My surgery is 9 days. One thing that's helped me so far has been to focus on eating slower and to really focusing on when my stomach is full and waiting for the rest of my body to catch up. It's really hard, and I don't always do great with it but I have noticed I've been eating less the last few weeks so at least it's a start. I don't know if you were told "put your fork down and take a break between bites" thing, but I think that really does help to. When I catch myself eating too fast, I just kind of mentally step back and give myself a minute. Good luck with your surgery and you're liquid diet. If you haven't yet, go subscribe to the march surgeries thread and we can all keep up with each other
  22. This has been the absolute hardest part of my journey so far. My surgery is next Tuesday and I've only told some of my friends and family in the last few weeks. It's been almost a year since I started this, and i really didn't want to talk about it constantly for the whole time. I've really only told people on a need to know basis. My aunt works in the same building as me, so she would notice I was gone for a month, and the same with most of my friends who are also coworkers. For a while no one but my husband and two friends that had the surgery knew. Then I told two other friends but that was it from early summer when I started until about a month ago when I went to my final appointment. So far I've been pleasantly surprised with people's reactions. I have two friends who have struggled with their weight who I was worried about but they've been very supportive. One of them even traded me a bunch of clothes which was great. My biggest concern was my dad. He really hasn't been in my life much until the last year and he's been a bit over bearing since then. Trying to make up for lost time I suppose. But I had minor surgery a few months ago and he drove me crazy. He's also one of the reasons I've struggled with my weight my entire life. I remember him making me eat until I literally threw up once when I was about 5 and even now he constantly tried to make me eat more, makes comments about how I "eat like a bird" ect...(I really don't). He also constantly questions my decision not to have kids. Anyway this weekend I finally just told him. My best friend had the surgery last year and he's seen her progress so he was excited for me. I explained to him that I don't want visitors in the hospital or while I'm recovering at home and he was ok with that. Honestly it's been a huge relief getting that over with. I feel so much more ready for it now that I'm not trying to hid it from anyone. I still haven't told my mom. I don't see her much, our relationship is also very complicated but I can easily get through the entire thing without seeing her. She is a nurse so that would be super helpful but she is into a lot of "alternative medicine" and takes it very personal if you're not into it to. There is a "secret surgery" thread on here somewhere dealing with similar issues. I posted there a while back, and I'm relieved at the progress I've made since I've posted that. Good luck with telling people, I've been very lucky so far and I hope you are too. Don't let them make you question your choices. As you said in your post, it is a weight lifted when you finally come clean. I've watched a couple of your videos, and plan on watching some more while I'm down. You're going to do awesome.

sleepless since i found out my date

Me too. My date is march 4th and I wake up once an hour thinking about it. Only two weeks to go. I'm lucky enough to have really good short term and lots of vacation time so I'm taking a few days off between now and my surgery date so I can relax a little.
