How is weight loss for people over 50?

Hey Carol, I sure hope you get to come home the same day too. My dr. had told me to be prepared to stay over night but I did not have to after all. I had to get up and walk completely around both nurses stations before I could. I was so drugged, my husband said if he had not been holding my arm and pulling the IV stand, I couldn't have made it. My legs kept buckeling but somehow I made it. He said I would forget the IV pole was there and just walk off. I was so determined to come home the same day, that I would have done most anything.. ha ha Glad your surgery is so close. Brenda

    A fool for my tool...

Hi again, I have eaten a little more than I should today too. We have had friends here most of the day and of course what do you do when friends are here? EAT! I am really hoping that first fill will help to restrict me. With my luck it will take several fills. ha I have appointments for the first three fills. I get one on the 8th, then one two weeks later, and a third two weeks later. Then I think we play it by ear. Dr. Wellborn said if you can eat 1/2 sandwich or hamburger, you need a fill.. I like the way he thinks.. Keep in touch and keep our fingers crossed that the fill helps us. I thought I was going to starve during the first two weeks of liquids.. but its better now. Take care, Brenda

    A fool for my tool...

Hi, During the 2 weeks post-op of liquids, I lost 10-12 pounds of the 16 or so I have lost now. I did not have a pre-op diet and have not had a fill yet. My first fill is Jan. 8th. I can hardly wait. Hope you are doing well. Email me or message me if you have any questions I can help with. I am just getting started in my journey but I will be glad to help if I can. Brenda

How is weight loss for people over 50?

Hello Texasbanster, uijjjjjI am 4 weeks post-op and I felt so nervous before my surgery, I could have cried. I did not know why but I did. I promise you that it will be fine. Just remember, the first couple of weeks of liquids will not last for ever and then you can start a more normal eating pattern. Being able to eat a small amount and feel full, they tell me, comes from getting your fills. You will feel some restriction right after surgery due to the swelling. Once the swelling starts to go away, you might get a bit hungry. In all honesty, I started getting hungry before those first 2 weeks of liquids were up but some folks don't. I get my first fill on Jan 8th. I can hardly wait. I want to have the feeling of eating only a small amount and feeling full. I still feel some restriction in the mornings. The bands are tighter in the morning. I am only getting started in my journey but there are so many people on here that have been doing this for a long time and have been very successful. They are great help. One of the many that has really helped me has been Indigo Girl. She is so positive and will tell you "just how it is." As far as exercise, my dr. wanted me to start walking right away. Walking helps to eliminate the gas they use to expand your abdomen in order to do the surgery. Every dr. has different things they require. The best advise I can give you is to follow to the "t", what the dr. orders. Good luck and keep us posted on how you are doing. Brenda

    A fool for my tool...

Jack, I have been reading these post since August and I just have to tell you that I love reading yours. You are so funny. You make me laugh out loud. I may try the Chinese foot-binding technique to my head. ha ha. I have been banded for 4 weeks and 3 days. Life is so much easier now that I have gotten past those hellish two weeks of liquids. Keep on posting so I can smile and laugh more often. If I miss a day of laughing, then I feel I have truly lost something special. Take care and good luck. Brenda

How is weight loss for people over 50?

Hey, it seems like nobody is posting very much. I guess everone is with family. I do not feel right if I can't get on this forum and read what everyone else has been doing. I am 4 weeks and 3 days post surgery. Things are sure better now that I have gotten past the first two weeks. I have lost 16 pounds. I know that is not a lot of pounds but I didn't have any pre-op diet so I don't think thats too bad. I get my first fill on Jan 8th. I am really looking forward to that but one thing I am worried about is in the mornings lately, I feel some restriction and am not hungry for a few hours once I get up. Has anyone else had that happen? What will happen once I start getting fills. If I feel that full in the morning before I get a fill, what's going to happen when I do get one?? Any body had this experience?? Hope everyone is doing great. Brenda;)

    Arkansas Bansters!!!

Hello again. I forgot to tell you I did not have to be on a special diet before surgery. I would have lost more if I had but my dr., Dr. Wellborn, Little Rock,AR. said with my BMI only being 41 he did not feel my liver was too large and therefore I did not have to be on any special diet before surgery. Brenda

    Arkansas Bansters!!!

Hello, my name is Brenda. I had my banding done Nov. 30th. How are you doing since your surgery? I have lost only 16 pounds but that is surely a good start. I get my first fill on Jan. 8th. I can't wait. I really do get hungry. Do you have to stay on 800-100 calories per day like I have to? Good luck, Brenda

    Arkansas Bansters!!!

Hello, good to hear from you. I had my surgery on Nov. 30th. I have lost 15 pounds. I was hoping I would had lost more by now but I am thankful for the 15. I am hoping the first fill I get on Jan. 8th will help some. I am scheduled for two more fills two weeks apart. Surely by the 3rd fill, I will be at the "sweet spot". I did not like the first 2 weeks of liquids.. I was soooooo glad to get to the next stage. Take care and keep me posted on how you are doing. Brenda

    Arkansas Bansters!!!

Hello Arkansas gang, I just found this forum and am so glad we have one for folks from AR. I live in Malvern and was banded on Nov. 30th. Dr. Wellborn did my surgery. I am very happy with him and his staff. His wife, Suzan works in his office and is a registered bariatic nurse. She has been very helpful during the whole thing. I have heard that Dr. Luttrell is a good dr. as well. I get my first fill on Jan 8th. I can not wait because I am getting so hungry. All those folks that have written in the forums about not having any hunger..wow, wish I had not. Actually, it did not take long for me to start getting hungry. Thought I was gonna starve during the liquid phase. THat has been the worst thing so far for me. How are all of you doing? Please let me know. Take care, Brenda

How is weight loss for people over 50?

Hello there Brenda. Nice name .. lol. I see you were banded in Sept. I was banded Nov. 30th. I have really enjoyed getting to eat some real food this week. I have not had anything stuck until tonight. I ate an orange. I only ate the inside part but it felt like it was stuck for a while. I guess you live and learn. Take care, Brenda B.

How do you deal with OTHER people's expectations ??

Hello, I understand what you are going through. I am almost 3 weeks out and everyone is asking me "how much weight have you lost" I have explained to everyone about not having any restriction now and about the fills but they still ask me every time I see them. Its driving me nuts. I wish I had not told anyone about the surgery. They look at it like its just like any other diet and you should be losing every week. I have been wanting to say this to someone so thanks for bringing it up. Brenda

How is weight loss for people over 50?

Hi Janet, Well I cheated for the first time today. I feel very guilty. I had popcorn with pecans drizzled with white chocolate. I had 2 small cups. Now I want carbs badly... My own fault. ha I don't feel like I have any restriction. I guess my swelling is gone and I have to wait for the fills. My first one is not until Jan. 8th. I feel like I could eat most anything. Is that normal at this stage of the game? I will be 3 weeks post op on Friday. Take care, Brenda

Its so hard not to. I can't wait to get my first fill. Hope it helps me a lot but its almost 4 weeks away. Take care, Brenda

    Getting Banded tomorrow (11/30)

I am on liquids for the first wo weeks. Now, they can be thick liquids. I am trying to make sure I take in at least 8 cups a day. I have to work att. I am supposed to take in 800 calories/day. That is sure not hard to do if you drink any juices since they are fairly high in calories. I am worried about not getting enough protein these first two weeks. The dr. said not to worry too much about these first two weeks but it seems you need plenty of protein so you will heal properly. I am not back to work yet. I am planning on going back this Friday which will make it a week off. Good talking to you. Brenda

    Getting Banded tomorrow (11/30)

Glad things went well for you. I was banded on 11/30/07 too. My dr. had told me I would probably spend the night but I did really well and went home. The surgery was at 9:30 a.m. and I was home after an hour drive by 4:30 p.m. Also, the dr. found a hietal hernia and repaired it while he was in there. I am still sore but not taking much pain meds. My upper abdomen is very bruised too. Is yours? As far as gas goes, yes I have had tons of gas. Never heard such noises.. ha I made myself walk each day even if its not very far. The walking does get the gas to moving. Glad to talk to someone who had surgery the same day as I. Take care, Brenda

How is weight loss for people over 50?

Hi everyone, It is 11:30p.m. and I had my surgery this morning about 9:30. It went well. I got to come home today and was home by 4:30 p.m. after an hour's drive. I am pretty sore. It seems the port site is the most painful. The MD gave me a prescripton for Mepergan (Demerol and Phenergan). I did not get them filled because they are pretty strong and I have some Ultraset which is non-narcotic. They seem to help quite a bit. That is what I am doing up again this late. Well looking forward to sharing my weight loss with you all and this journey unfolds. Brenda:clap2:

How is weight loss for people over 50?

No actually my M.D. said I did not have to have a special pre-op diet since my BMI was not real high. He said he did not think he would have any problems with my liver.
