    Feeling lost

Hi Jaynedeath, The first week post op was the worst for me. I was still weak from the surgery, I was sick of drinking broth, I was super worried about not getting enough liquids and getting dehydrated and I was dying to chew something, anything...! It felt like the longest week of my life. The good news is that it gets so much better. Once you are back on Protein shakes and then pureed foods, you will appreciate every gulp and bite - priceless. In all honesty, I could not find a clear liquid Protein that tasted good. Isopure Zero Carb tastes horrible. I tried making ice cubes with it, popsicles, you name it. Nothing made it better. By mid-week I decided to just drink it straight up every morning and be done with it. In the beginning I felt that warm drinks were soothing to my new stomach: decaf tea, broth. I drank Light Cranberry juice (delish), and diluted apple juice. Not the best nutritional choices, but allowed temporarily by my doctor to get me through phase 1. Best of luck!!!

    Honest Answers Only!

I had 12 days of Protein shakes and 2 days of clear liquids. I did not cheat and my surgeon said my liver was impeccable, which made the surgery a breeze and also resulted in less time under anesthesia. I am not judging anyone's decision but for me the day I started the pre-op die, was the day I committed to a new lifestyle where food was no longer the center of my universe. It wasn't as bad as I thought, and I was NOT physically hungry. I felt good and lost 14lbs. In all honesty, the first week post-op clear liquids diet was a lot worse, but also necessary for safety reasons. I say if you are not ready to stick to the pre-op diet, maybe you might consider postponing this life changing surgery until you are ready to commit. Best of luck to everyone!

Did I make the right decision?

Oh Dear, you are not alone!! I was sleeved on Dec 16th. My HW was 255, SW 241 and I am now at 229. HOWEVER, I have been at this weight since December 24th. And it even went up to 231 and back down a couple of times. It is killing me to think that I could be a slow loser also. But I do have faith that in the long run, the sleeve will work for me as I am sure it will work for you. Just look back at all the changes you have already made to your lifestyle. Most people on the forums will tell you that this is not a linear journey. There are stalls, ups, and downs. Hang in there. You are NOT alone and you WILL succeed. ((hugs))

  9. Luckily my insurance paid for the surgery, but I was quoted the following (back in 2012) with Dr. Floch in Connecticut: The fees for the self pay surgeries are below. Norwalk Hospital- gastric band total = $18,950.00 Hospital fee= $10,000.00 Anesthesia fee= $1350.00 Surgeon fee= $7,600.00 St. Vincent’s- gastric sleeve total= $26,500.00 Hospital fee= $16,200.00 Anesthesia fee= $1800.00 Surgeon fee= $8,500.00 Best of luck on your decision!!

    Question

I think it is a good sign that you haven't vomited again, and I assume no fever of chills? Your abdomen was poked quite a bit, there are tons of muscles and nerves that are not very happy right now. Nevertheless, I would definitely call the MD ASAP to discuss, but hopefully everything is fine. Best of luck!!

    Stall Already?

Thanks for all the replies. We get spoiled by the first rush of pounds shed. laura-ven, the link you sent is phenomenal, I will definitely keep it for future reference. Best to all,
  13. Hi everyone! I was sleeved on the 16th. I had shoulder pain on days 1 - 2, now I only take pain medication if needed. I had 2 or 3 instances of stomach/esophagus cramping, and those were really painful. I am happy that hasn't re-occurred. Nausea was also bad initially, but I have not vomited at all since the surgery. I have no incision pain. I walk around a lot, and I feel it helps tremendously with pain, gas, and my breathing. If I stay in bed too long, everything goes downhill. I am struggling to get all protein in. Finally I decided to just drink the damn Isopure plain first thing in the morning to get it over with. I had initially tried to make ice cubes, mix with Crystal Light, but nothing made it taste better. Now I just plug my nose and drink it up. Thankfully I can swallow easily. I am giving myself Levonox shots (to prevent blood clots) daily (until day 7 post op). I am SO SICK of broth. I have 2 more days of clear liquids and I can't wait to taste a protein shake again (who would have thought!). I am actually dying to chew something crunchy and salty, like a cracker. On my first day home I was feeling miserable and for a couple of hours I had regrets - not anymore. I know this was the right decision for me. I hope everyone is doing great and healing well. Cheers to a great New Year ahead!!
  14. Congratulations on being clean! You deserve a pat on the back. Cheers to a wiser and successful journey ahead!
  15. You are not alone, exact scenario here: healthy with no co-morbities. The only difference is that I have two little girls instead of boys. It is also 2AM and I am awake too, sounds familiar? My surgery is Dec 16th 7:30AM. I found it helpful to read the VSG Veteran's threads - mostly positive feedback and life changing stories. I am drawn to surgery complication posts, but they are not helpful at this stage. I try to remind myself that I did my research, I did pick a good surgeon/hospital, I am educated on the signs of trouble and now I just have to follow all directions and stay positive. Visualization helps me too. When I start to get anxious, I close my eyes and picture all the great moments to come: my girls proud of me at the school exit, a family tennis match, comfy plane rides, running into former co-workers and friends, feeling healthy, vibrant and full of energy again, great sex . I am also writing letters to my daughters (just in case...), explaining that I believe in fate, and I have faith that you only leave this earth when your time comes. So, if something happens, it was going to happen whether I had surgery or not. This gives me great comfort. Best of luck, let's stay in touch!
