  1. shellief, I am 65, morbidly obese, but at the lower range, but I am an insulin dependent diabetic, have high blood pressure, and severe sleep apnea. PLUS the knee issues like you mentioned about your friend and back issues Why? All because of my weight. If I can encourage any younger people to do this early and avoid the extra burden of these health issues, I will. There is great hope, I will eliminate all three things from my life and I came home 4 days ago from the hospital following my surgery on only 20 units of insulin as opposed to 106 before surgery. But don't put yourself through 4 shots a day, dozen of meds that only cause side effects, when you can walk in greater health. I am committed all the way to doing this right and extending my life for my husband, kids, and grandkids. You can do it too Sharon C. and without your so-called friend. It is has made me so mad since I read your post that someone could be so ignorant and I also have compassion on her because she is lost in her own issues. She may still need a friend as others have mentioned as long as she doesn't pull you down, because if she continues to do so, it will only hurt you. Put yourself first in this situation. She is really in denial. Keep us posted. By the way, what has been your reaction? have you ignored her? Have you set her straight? Or are you just letting it set a while? You will know what to do when it is the right time for you.

Protein while traveling & Disney Dining

This is great to hear about Disney. We winter in FL and it will ease my mind about visiting Disney. I need to get a card from my Dr. this week when I go for my first visit.
  3. LaurieC check with your Dr. My gf was feeling the same way and was dehydrated. She had to get four days of iv fluids.

I haven't started them yet, but my friend takes the Celebrate chewable brand and says the chocolate and carmel are good.

Protein while traveling & Disney Dining

Have you tried the Power Crunch bars...especially the Chocolate Mint is delicious. I would take some Nectar to go packs that you can add to water bottles to get your protein. You can find them at the Vitamin Shoppe and online at www.MyBariatriPantry. I bought their variety pack samples to try various ones.
  6. I too USE to be healthy when I was heavy or so I told myself until I developed diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea. It can come on you all at once. I don't hear about or no any heavy people who reach their later years in life and are still healthy. And by that time some of these diseases can be so bad you are now facing the side effects like heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, neuropathy, kidney disease/failure, blindness and on and on. Your EX friend is delusional if she thinks she will remain healthy as an obese person because none of us will!! Take it from me, I had my surgery for my health and the weight loss and looking better is a bonus.
  7. jesswis the white on your tongue may be a build up of yeast in your body. You may want to research it. If you are allowed later, try some probiotics. good bacteria for your intestines.
  8. I have been drinking Isopure Grape Frost in a bottle from Vitamin Shoppe. 40g. of protein in 20 ozs. That was my main drink until I could handle cold items like popsciles. I eat a lot of those. The Popscile brand Tropical ones are real good. Have you tried your favorite chicken soup like noodle or vegetable with straining off the broth? I did that withthe Lipton packet and my husband ate the noodles.

plumpypanda23, you are so right. Glad to hear your surgery will be soon.
  11. She's not a true friend. A true friend would NEVER write something like that on a public blog. She is IGNORANT about weigh loss surgery. It is NOT cosmetic. Move forward, hold your head up high and push forward to good health. You will find a real true friend on your journey.

    extreme hair loss

I have thin hair and am worried about it too and everything I read says make sure you get your protein in every day and at the higher level whenever possible. Like 80 instead of the 60

I had mine five days ago at Providence Hospital in Southfield with Dr. Katz the director of the program. He and his staff are fabulous. He has a NP named, Patty who meets you at your blood work up at the hospital and you feel so comfortable when you go into the hospital. The whole staff on 3 Annex where they put the bariatric patients are fabulous! I am a patient at U of M and my PCP wanted me to attend three different seminars/hospitals to glean all the information I could before she would sign off. I liked Providence because I got to meet Dr. Katz right away and they have an insurance girl who got me approved while I was seeing him! I go to their Providence Park office in Novi. I have had the best experience under the circumstances possible. The Dr. also gave me his personal cell phone number post surgery and called me the day after I came home. Very personable and impressive.
  15. I love the Isopure Grape Frost. I also like Mango Peach, but the Passion Fruit was nasty to me. i bought some mango peach powder and i hope it stays mixed well. The Nectar powders separate and settle to the bottom of the glass.

TMI........ BUT WHEN WILL I POOP

I had the same question. I am 5 days post-op and no sign. My surgeon did say don't be concerned when the barium from the swallow test comes out. I started a stool softener today. I do not want problems.
  17. I was experiencing the same thing until the end of day four and it started to ease. I could not take in anything cold. My NP told me it was the hiatal hernia repair I also had and when the cold hits the spot it hurts. I found the more I could drink the lesser it hurt. Hoping it lets up for you soon. Keep sipping!

    Having Second Thoughts

It's normal to question your decision, but you will never regret it. I am so glad I went through with my surgery. Once you get through the first three days, things improve every day. I can not believe how great I feel at 5 days post-op. I have fibromyalgia, which causes a lot of fatigue and i have had no problems. I am actually up and walking more than in years. You feel so hopeful!! The important thing... stay calm and try your best to walk in peace. I had a few knots in my stomach here and there, but I would give myself a body hug, take some deep breaths and try my best to relax.

    medical bracelets for Sleevers?

I will check into this for myself. What does blind/NG mean?
  20. My surgeon told me that the liquids just keep flowing through your stomach helping it to heal so I've never heard you could drink too much, especially the first two weeks of liquids. I agree with onajournee.
  21. I am 5 days post op and my surgeon will not allow me any protein shakes yet. Only clear liquids and Isopure (Grape Frost, my favorite!) or Nectar clear protein drinks. I also had a hiatal hernia repair and when I tried cold drinks, ice, or popsicles the first four days it hurt. I would get a twinge of pain when the cold passed the repair area. Then last night it stopped and boy do popsicles taste good!! I have always been a water drinker so it tastes good to me. I am thankful for no nausea and hopes it stays that way. I haven't measured my liquids, just trying to sip as much as I can 24/7. I know it increases every day how much I can drink.
  22. I probably should start a new post on how I am doing post-op, wittygirl. But things continue to go very well except for sleeping. I am having a hard time sleeping int he chair, but there is no way I can sleep in a bed. that is a tip I would give to all the pre-op people. I fortunately have a lazy-boy but if you don't, you might want to rent one for 3 weeks. This is what two friends told me I would need. You are swollen and it is impossible for me to lay on my incisions. I am doing well with getting my liquids in and getting up and walking. Feeling better than I ever imagined. Now if I could get some lseep that would be great, only 1 1/2 hours to 3 hours at a time. thanks for asking!
  23. Wittygirl, I asked the nurse for the binder and she got me one. Insurance paid for it. I got it Day 2. I am walking more than ever. I have fibromyalgia and knee problems and I didn't know what to expect, but with the pain meds, it makes it easy to get around. There is a lot less pain than I expected too. I was on fentanyl in the hospital in my iv drip. They said they are using this a lot more than morphine these days. I came home with liquid oxycodone every four hours, but already today I have been able to stretch it to five hours with no problem. My goal is eight hours before I go to the Dr. on Thursday when they hope to switch me back to my Tramadol which I take for fibro muscle pain. So we shall see. I am not hungry at all, but am sipping away when awake. At first, each sip hurt because I had a hiatal hernia repair and when the liquid hits that first it would ache for a second and then let up. Each day it gets less and less. I had shoulder pain from gas, but that is just about gone. Walking is the key for sure. And second make sure you have Gas X strips. In the hospital, they gave me infant gas drops and a few times a dissolving tablet for gas. Most of the gas now is intestinal and you want that. It is a good sign that "the plumbing" is functioning again. LOL!!! I had such peace going into my surgery because I am an information girl and I gathered all I could. Plus my hospital was wonderful and I got to meet my nurse practitioner (NP) over my case when I went in for my pre-op blood work and she told me she would be waiting for me to come up to the floor from surgery. She was very encouraging and positive and "knows" I will be successful. How could I let someone like that down? Just an aside, I love Pharrell Williams song, "Happy", who doesn't it!! I looked down at my feet, they give gave me socks to wear with tread and on the each side is a happy face!!!! this is one of the best and happiest decisions I have ever made. Some more info. helpful to diabetics. I was taking four injections a day of both short-acting and long-acting insulin for a total of 106 units per day. I came home with 20 units of long lasting! Oh yes!!! This is one of the reason I did this, to be free of diabetes!!! Any more questions, feel free to ask, because I have nothing but time on my hands!
  24. Surgery went great! I ended up having a hiatal hernai repair too! 2 for 1! I got home yesterday and have found a way to be comfortable in my Lazy boy chair. I tried the bed, but I am a side sleeper and it is a no go right now with the abdomen swelling. Fluids are going down well and I am tolerating a Isopure protein drink. I love the Grape Frost...not to sweet, but refreshing plus jello and water. Broth hasn't tasted good to me yet. I had wonderful care at the hospital and I tried to do everything they said. Main thing...get up a walk every two hours. It gets the gas moving and makes you feel so much better. The pain has been tolerable with the meds. they give you and I got an abdomen binder which helps tremendously with getting up out of a chair. Any questions, feel free to ask. I want to share and help anyone I can. I lost 11 lbs. on my one week liquid diet which I followed to a tee. You are bit bloated with all the iv fluids when you get home, so I am not going to weigh myself until i go to the Dr. on Thursday for my one week appointment. I'm not worried about it right now. I just want to get healthy.
  25. Tomorrow is my sleeve surgery! i'm almost through my one week of a liquid diet and I think yesterday was the hardest day. I had to give up my veggies which really got me through and I was feeling very hungry. Today is totally clear liquids and it is going pretty good. I will let you know how it goes. I'm excited and still pretty calm, just a knot in my stomach once in a while.
