How to tell your friends and family that you are having WLS surgery
I have not told all yet. Of course my husband and grown children know. They all are supportive. I have 1 friend and one co-worker/friend that I nearly had to tell, as she is who I report to for time off, and the many doctor appts I have been to. My hesitation is that I had the lap band several years ago (which I will have taken out, then revision to RNY) and it didn't work. Even had a revision surgery on it. After the first surgery, I did tell all, and nearly all were supportive. But, now I am afraid some will judge me because it did not work, and this is even more intrusive surgery (and the easy way out as I have heard some of them say about others). So, I haven't even told my mother this time. I guess they will find out at some time, but would like to learn my new way of eating and dealing with food/emotions/situations without the eyes of the world on me.

Good for you! You will prevail. It is great that you have been recording your info on my fitness pal....it is a great tool. And I agree you will/would have much of this done before surgery anyway. Keep on keeping on...and let us know how you are doing.

BCBS-IL Approval received
Congrats! That is awesome, you don't have to worry about that now. We have enough to do and think about, without worrying about the insurance approval. I have everything done, just waiting on my approval now. When will you get to meet with the surgeon and schedule a date?

What was your first thought on the way to the hospital
I really felt you hit the nail on the head when you said you felt like you were melting out of a fat prison. I have never thought of it that way, but it really is. It holds us hostage and keeps us from living life. Thank you for that perspective. I am still nervous about doing a major surgery to get this weight off, but it has not happened any other way. Waiting on insurance approval now....getting closer. Thanks again for that thought, It is time to be set free.

Met all requirements-waiting on Anthem BC/BS
I just got my clearance from the nutritionist today and the psych evaluation came in approving me as a candidate while I was at my appointment! So excited. My doctor said they would send RNY request letter to the insurance company, in the order they get to it. Should be this week yet. He went ahead and made an appointment for next month, but we are hoping the approval from insurance comes before that. Then they will cancel his appointment and schedule me with the surgeon. I had an endoscopy 12/25/13, so I won't have to redo that. They only require one week of liquid diet before surgery. Praying to get my surgery before April 13th, so I can use the end of my vacation before I lose it. Just had to share, I haven't told a lot of people or family. So not many I can tell! Thanks for being there.

Lapband slipped twice
I have Anthem BC BS. I had band surgery in fall 2007..worked pretty good until summer of 2008...had a blockage, then gall bladder removed in November 2008..surgeon took out band and repositioned it during that surgery (that option not even discussed before the gall bladder removal). Anyway, it never worked right again. So, November 2013 I have requested to it removed and revised to the RNY. Insurance okayed band removal, but denied the RNY. I had to go thru all the nut classes, and psych evaluation again. will finish that up next week, and resubmit the RNY request. I will let you know what the out come is, I hope by the end of February. I am getting quite anxious and still nervous that they will deny me again. Good luck to you, I have seen many on here that have no problem getting approval for revisions.

LAPBAND TO SLEEVE TO RNY
Praying for your recovery, and for this to work for you. Thankfully you have a surgeon that will do what needs to be done to help you be successful. Take each day one at a time, and know you are not alone, we will keep in touch and pray for you. I am going to revise from the band to RNY, hopefully soon if my insurance will approve. keep us posted.

Waiting on Insurance Approval!
Welcome Musiclady2014! I agree, this board is awesome. I am fulfilling insurance requirements too. One more NUT class, and the letter from the psych eval/testing. Hoping for March or April surgery date. Congrats on making a decision for you and for your future. You will definitely learn a lot here, and they are very supportive. Don't hesitate to share your ups and your downs, sometimes we will have them and it is easier to know you are not alone. Just a little shout out for "My Fitness Pal" -great tool to help you along the way, free apps available. Prayers for your journey. Keep in touch.

Frustrating day.
I can imagine how frustrating that can be. Hang in there and take it one day at a time. I don't know about you, but my weeks have been flying by...it is already February! Can you believe it? Turned in my Psych tests, have to wait for his approval, 2 more classes and my next appointment is in a week and a half. Praying all comes together for us all soon.

MMPI personality test/MBMD for Psych evaluation
Thank you for your input...I am feeling better. I was just a bit taken back w/the 2 quite lengthy tests. I have already looked thru and filled them out. It was different, but I just answered honestly. Here's to good results!!!

MMPI personality test/MBMD for Psych evaluation
Has anyone else had to take these personality tests as a part of the psych evaluation? I had my appt. today and at the end of the session my Dr said I needed to fill out these two tests, return them and he would make his decision on my bypass surgery after he gets the scores back. I am a band to RNY revision, so I had the psych evaluation before that surgery in 2007 w/someone else and didn't have to go thru quite this much. Just wondering what it was like for others. thanks.

final clearance

Hi! Just starting out!
Hi MiniLynne....this is a very informative board. I have learned a lot. I am fairly new too. Hoping to have my RNY and my band removed early April. It is exciting and nerve racking at the same time. Can't wait to start my new life, be healthier and get to be more active in all the kids and grandkids lives. Good luck!

Have to hane 5 visits with my pcp.
Hang in there! It does go by fast. I decided to have my band removed and to have revision to RNY the first part of November. Even though my insurance does not require 6 months visits, I do have to go thru 5 nutrition classes, 1 support group meeting, a psych evaluation before re-submitting my revision request. they approved the band removal, but denied the original RNY request. I have actually re-learned a lot from the classes I have been to. And I have been using the "My Fitness Pal" app to track my food and my exercise. I believe it will help make me do better once I do have my surgery. So....make some mini goals and use this time to get yourself and habits ready for your new life!!

In the hospital again!
Will do Misty. Take care.

fitness pal
I love my fitness pal! I am using it for my Pre-Op weight loss. Have to lose 5% and get my NUT classes in for the NUT to sign off. It has taught me ALOT! I track even when I don't eat right, I have learned how high the sodium is in foods that I thought were a good choice to eat. I track my exercise as well. Can't wait to see it move tracking my weight loss....down about 5-6 lbs so far. Good luck w/your post diet.

Lap Band vs RNY Bypass
You can hear a lot about both on this site and the lap-band site. But, ask your surgeon about the actual lifestyle each surgery will mean. There are some that will swear by the lap band, and some by RNY. The only thing I can add is that I had issues with my band from 5 years ago, and am currently awaiting the removal and revision to RNY. Wish I had done it first. I was sure I could do it with the band, but it is not just you and the band, sometimes there are things that go wrong with the band and it's maintenance. My surgeon told me they have seen quite a few removals of the band. That being said, please talk to your surgeon about the option differences for you and your lifestyle. And, congrats on making the decision to take control of your life! Good luck.

Band Hasn't Worked For 5 Yrs....thinking Of Removing
Aww Crystal T....Sorry to hear you went thru so much pain and had to have surgery... I hope you get healed soon, and who knows what life has in store for you. Just take it one day at a time. @Lady VS...thanks for asking. I did not do very well on the foods, etc...but, I am back on the wagon, I have been going to the Y and walking/biking 3 times a week. Seeing a few pounds down. They have scheduled my psych evaluation for January 30th. I have to get in 5 NUT classes, should have done by Feb 10th. When all behind me, we can request the RNY bypass surgery again thru my insurance. So, one day at a time, I will use my fitness pal to help. I see you are almost to goal! Way to go....I can't imagine being that close. It has been years since I was even close to normal weight. What exercising routine do you use? Hope your holidays were good as well.
