    Enough calories?

    I work out 4 or 5 days a week and can get up to about 600-700 calories burned (depending on what you're looking at.) I'm not losing at a crazy fast pace but I am steady. I don't worry too much about eating low-fat (although I prefer skim milk and yogurt.) My physician's assistant basically said that they want me to eat up to 1200 calories with the sweet spot being between 800 and 1200. So if I burn 600 and eat 800, I am supposed to eat enough to get up to 800, so another 600 calories. (Obviously if I burn 600 and eat 1400 that is fine.) It is not as hard as it sounds; it's a couple of extra Snacks. Add some Peanut Butter to your post-workout shake. Etc. Cubes of cheese, if you like it. Some nuts or avocado.
  3. Bombs, I don't get this. How in the world is this SLOW? By anyone's definition, you have lost an incredible amount in 3 months. Either way, I'm with you. Wearing a size 12 or 14 in jeans, and enjoying myself. I cannot call my loss slow, even though it did slow down after the first month.

    I've lost almost 50 pounds and I honestly have to say, not one person has asked me HOW. Some people are starting to comment on it but no one is being intrusive. Not to say that someone won't be, at some point...
  5. Very true, McB. I am in smaller clothes at 192 than I was a few years ago when I was sick and in the 170s. Not all of them, but enough. It's really interesting.

    you have unlimited open gym right? You can go to just 4 days of cross fit next week and you are golden. You can tame down the workout on a subsequent day if 2 days in a row is rough. Do like 60-70% effort, or less if you want to. You can do it! Hi Fiddle, No, I'm actually still on punchcard. The bigger issue is that because I work in nonprofits our board meetings all tend to clump the same weeks, in the same evenings. So last week I was busy 4 evenings out of 5 and could only get to one session (we do 5:30 and 6:30 pm.) Then yesterday I was maybe going to sing at a funeral in the morning and was futzing back and forth with that until partner workouts had already started. It is what it is. I'll do my best this week to get in 2 or 3, but I'm afraid it's the same deal. Meetings M-W for sure. Excited though: I have a new tshirt that says "Burpees don't really like you either" and I can't wait to wear it. Challenge: 6/10 CF and now 13,800 out of 16,000m swimming. I will be able to hit that one, anyway!

  8. I'm not sure I agree with the definitions of losing slowly, above. Most of us are still relatively new at this, and things taper off. Based on the definitions above I am a slow loser, but I disagree with that assessment. I had my 3 month check up last week and the PA basically called me a superstar. I lost 4 or 5 pounds during the month of January overall; but at one point early I dipped down to about 1.5 pounds over my current weight and popped right back up to the previous weight for almost 3 weeks. However, my weight loss overall is about 46 pounds in 13 weeks. I exercise regularly, and track well. We lose all perspective here when we expect it to come off quickly or compare ourselves to others. I have a good friend who was sleeved in June and she really is a slow loser. She has lost 50 pounds total, but she stalled at 40 during months 3-5. She had to increase her exercise to an hour a day to move things lower. That stall finally broke and she has started losing in little increments again. But the point is, 7 months later, she is down 50 pounds. She has NEVER lost 50 pounds before without making it a full time job. We all need to have patience.

    Vitamins! Choices, choices, choices

    I took the Flintstones double dose for the first couple of months, second guessed it and order something from Diet Direct. I just realized that the vitamin makes me slightly sick to my stomach for a good 15 minutes. Going back to Flintstones or similar when these are done. Yuck.

    B-12 is important on its own/in addition, because once you have a deficiency it is difficult to overcome it.

    Can I wear a bra during surgery?

    My surgeon put an abdominal binder on after surgery and I woke up with it. That said, it was relatively easy to slip a bra on over it, and I am pretty well-endowed. But you'll probably need to keep it off after the surgery while you're in the hospital. It's not exactly public...

    CF session 4 tonight. Only 5,000 to go to goal. Or, what? 6-8? Yikes. Will either swim or do CF partner work tomorrow. Depends on what my body tells me in the morning. ETA: Oh no! I'm not too sore. But if I go it means I will be for the rest of the weekend. Decisions…I have one hour to decide now...

    Craving Pad Thai

    Occasionally I will order Thai for the family. I usually ask for double the Protein and when I am serving myself measure very carefully. The sodium may hit you, would be my only warning. That said, I can usually hit the craving with some chicken in any curry sauce, skipping the rice. But if nothing else will do, have a little, track it scrupulously, and don't go crazy. Unless you're one of those people who can't stop once you start. :-)

    I am proud of you. Seriously, no one can look into someone else's life and decide what is best for that person. That said, it sounds like you have thought this through and please know that you have support.

    TL; DR? I read your post. I was giving you three examples of actually going through it. Again, not meant to be harsh. And I agree the timing sucks. We really needed my husband to get in in December. Now assuming he gets approved eventually he will need to wait until June because of his work schedule. And maybe that will ultimately help him. But it is mightily frustrating. So I get that. Good luck.

    I may state something unpopular here, but I don't think the psych evaluation is a bad idea. I can share three different stories. I flew through it. That is because although I was obese enough to qualify for surgery, I have never had an eating disorder or a tendency to binge. It was very cut and dried. My close friend, who has a history of bulimia, lied her way through it. She is very smart and knew exactly what they were after. She passed the first time out. My husband, who has a history of bulimia and binge eating, told the truth. He did not pass the first time but did pass the second time. Of the three of us, my opinion is that my husband is the least ready for the surgery. We are still fighting the insurance for it. My sense is that he will get it, eventually. But it will take some time. My friend, who got the surgery 4 months before me, has had some really tough realizations since being sleeved. Over the summer she called and said, "I was not prepared for the fact that I have to actually process through my feelings." I think this hits us all on some level, but it was really gnarly for her. She had conquered the bulimia a long time before but not "stuffing" her feelings. She has also had a significant slowing in her weight loss (way more than she or the doctor expected) and has been one of those patients who has to exercise 7 days a week, and track maniacally to lose each pound. And even though I didn't have the obvious food issues (the big ones) I still have had to adjust my thinking to a new normal and come up with certain coping strategies, etc. I would not work with the psych that my practice uses but I think it's important that we all really understand that this is as much a head game as a physical one. More so, really.
