8 year post op in New Jersey

Good job on catching yourself!!! You've been down this road before so you know how it works. You will get back to where you want to be, just give yourself time. It's not as quick the second time. Congratulations on that initial weight loss from 300 to 160, that was awesome. You'll be back there again one day. good luck to you and keep up that positive attitude.

    Upper g.i. hiatal hernia?

I had one too and didn't get it repaired during surgery for some unknown reason. I got the sleeve and I have suffered with horrible reflux ever since. I am having a gastric bypass in a couple of months and hope that will fix everything. Good luck with yours.

    Spasms and cramping

If you are getting 50 ounces in at 3 days post op you are doing well. You are going through a healing process so you can't expect to get in so quickly. After my sleeve 2 years ago it took me 3 to 4 weeks to get that much Fluid in. You'll get to the goal amounts don't rush yourself. I am having a revision to RNY in August so I'm dreading having to do it all again.
  4. wow, this has me worried. I am having a revision from sleeve to RNY in August. I was told I would lose a lot of weight so now I'm confused.
  5. Every one is different. Some lose their hair while others don't. There is no rhyme or reason really. I took Vitamins, Biotin, used special shampoos and at about 5 months post surgery I started having major hair loss. I just cut my hair short and it eventually all grew back and it looks great now. I'm having revision surgery in August so I fully expect to lose my hair again but I know it's only temporary.
  6. The shakes are awesome. The most important thing is to get the Protein in so if it takes the shakes to do it then so be it. It's your journey so how you eat will be totally different from everyone else. It's not a 1 size fits all kind of journey. We all tolerate foods differently so do what is best for your tummy.

    No more alimony

I've never wanted to be divorced and after 37 years of marriage, I don't think I will be but.... if it ever happens I hope I can do it as gracefully and Adult-like as y'all have. How we treat others says so much about us. It's nice to be in the company of such awesome people.

Things I can no longer have....

I had the sleeve a little over 2 years ago. I can eat most anything I want to but I don't because I know it is bad for me. I still have a lot of restriction so I can't eat a lot. Sugar and sweets are too easy to eat so I try to avoid them all together. The first year to 18 months for any surgery is the healing period but also called the honey moon period because that is when you will lose the fastest. After that, weight loss slows down because you can eat more and carbs and fats are easier to eat. Use this time to learn what is healthy because if you go back to eating that stuff you used to eat, you will gain weight and its just not worth it.

    Surgery Monday 6/13!

congratulations to all of you. I wish you all an easy time and a quick recovery. I had the sleeve a little over 2 years ago and I love it. I'm having terrible reflux now so I'm having the bypass done in August. Weight loss is wonderful, you are going to love it.

    No One In The Sixties?

Those issues will get better... it takes time. good luck on your losing....
  12. @@now2children, thank you for sharing your story. So happy you are doing well now and that you have won the battle of control over food. Keep up the good work.
  13. I'm finishing up my tests next week and hopefully I'll have my revision to RNY in August. I'm going out of the country for the month of July so I've been busy this month getting everything done. It's much easier this time then the first time around. I guess because I've been down this road before and it's all familiar. I hope you all get surgery dates soon. The first week is rough but after that it gets easier every day. Follow the diet and learn the new recipes because if you go back to the old way of eating you will certainly regain. Good luck everyone and happy losing.

    No One In The Sixties?

@@texasbrit10, @@catdaddy, and @@Julie norton, I agree with y'all. We are definitely not too old to reap the benefits of WLS. I think we are probably more appreciative of this opportunity than the younger folks because we've "been there, done that".. I'm 61 and had the sleeve a couple of years ago. Because of GERD I'm having the revision to the RNY and I don't think I'm too old for that either. Being healthy at this age is so important and I just have to say it's a great time to be alive. Not too many years ago, people didn't have these options. I wish everyone continued success in their weight loss surgery...and good health.
  15. It all depends on how much weight you have to lose. If you are in the higher weight ranges, the RNY might be better. The Sleeve is a bit easier but then it's easier to cheat which could cause you from losing all the weight you need to lose. I had the Sleeve 2 1/2 years ago and I love it. I still have restriction and it's just so easy. The bad thing is that I have horrible gastric reflux and meds are not helping. I am scheduled for a revision to a RNY bypass in August. They are both tools, they both work but the RNY is malabsorbtive, which could cause dumping and there is the issue of taking Vitamins the rest of my life. Ah well.... Good luck to you.Great points....my BMI IS 51, I have 160 pounds to lose....so that clearly points to RNY. But I have a real fear of playing with my intestines, since they already seem rumbly and mildly unhappy 4 days a week....maybe I have chronically inflammation and have just always lived with it? But even more worrisome, my mother had her intestines resectioned in one place during a cancer surgery, and she never healed right, had bowel obstructions, developed a fistula from her intestines through to her belly button, it was awful. And I am afraid maybe I would heal like that? Your GERD must be awful to "leave it" for an RNY....it really is unbearable? It must be, if you are willing to through all this again. The sleeve seems like so much less trauma to my body. But maybe I am underestimating myself, and maybe I could handle the extra trauma of the RNY. Another plus for RNY....I only have 1 chance to do this with my insurance. So maybe I just go for the RNY, if I might wind up there one day anyway? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Hi Gina. I have to say I absolutely love my sleeve. It's awesome. After all this time I still have restriction. Maybe not as much as I did but I can still only eat small meals. I've had GERD for years but the surgery did make it worse. I've tried so many pills and though sometimes the meds help for awhile, nothing cures it or gets rid of it. My esophagus is inflamed, I have erosive esophagitis now because of the reflux. If I don't convert to the RNY I could end up with cancer, not to mention that the meds for reflux damage your bones. If you don't have the problems I do, you will love the sleeve. If you are truly afraid of the malabsorption issues then don't put yourself through the stress, just go with the sleeve. It's a much easier surgery. I was off work one week, went back to work and managed fine. At 5 months I traveled out of the country and did great. They are both wonderful surgeries. I prefer the sleeve and hate to have to change but my health requires it now. Good luck to you and get ready for some really big changes in your life. You are going to LOVE LOVE LOVE IT. Oh, btw, don't go overboard buying clothes during your weight loss. Shop second hand and thrift stores. You can't buy a new wardrobe every month for the new size you are. :-)

  17. Did you have reflex prior to surgery? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App Yes, I did.but I didn't think it would continue.
  18. I had the gastric sleeve done 2 and 1/2 years ago and I lost 70 pounds. I have kept it off and I love my sleeve. I follow my diet and I'm very comfortable with the sleeve but unfortunately I have developed severe Reflux and Gerd and no amount of medications helps me. I am going to do a revision to a bypass just to keep from getting esophageal cancer. I prefer the Sleeve and I'm sad I'm having to get the bypass but I have no choice at this point. For all of you who are undecided, if you have heartburn or acid reflux, go with the bypass, otherwise the sleeve is awesome. I'll be doing my revision in August.

    I'm torn..

I had the gastric sleeve done 2 1/2 years ago and I lost 70 pounds and have kept it off. I LOVE MY SLEEVE. But I have terrible GERD and Acid Reflux that has caused many problems. I am going through the process now of getting ready to have a revision to a bypass. I prefer the sleeve but the bypass will clear up the reflux issues I'm having now. All of the surgeries work but they are just tools and its up to you to pick your meals and stay on your diet. Good luck to all who have not had surgery yet, you are going to love it.
  20. Where are all the Mississippi Sleevers? It seems the other areas have a more active "local support group". Anybody around that wants to go through this process with another Mississippian? I am scheduled for surgery on February 10th in Jackson.

    My biggest fear

VGB... don't worry. You will lose, as everyone does. Your stomach is smaller (or will be if you haven't had surgery yet). You will eat so much less that you can't help but lose weight. Just remember.... exercise is an important part of the equation and if you want to lose the most you can you have to get your rear in gear and work if off. Good luck and enjoy the process.
  22. NotsobigMike...it is way too early for you to be drinking those shakes. You should be on clear liquids for 2 weeks after surgery. Eat jello, soup, or protein mixed with water. Try the Unjury Protein mix. It tastes the best. After two weeks you introduce the other things. Follow the plan your doctor gave you. You will soon be back on the milk based protein shakes and they will not longer hurt when you drink. It is a slow process... don't rush it. You need time to heal. Just because your incisions are healed does not mean you are healed internally so take it easy and don't injure yourself. I started out with jello, apple sauce, scrambled egg, chicken soup, etc... I know you think you will never be "normal" again but that is not true. Your stomach will keep you from eating a lot but you will be able to eat just about anything in time. I'm a year out and although some things are more difficult to eat than others. I can truly eat anything I want, but just a small portion of it. Life is good, not easy.... but good is good enough. Good luck to you.

Serious Question. How is WLS the "wrong way"?

There is no "wrong way" to lose weight. Some diets work for some people and not for others, we are all different. We've each selected WLS for pretty much the same reasons. Our struggles may vary a bit but we've all struggled. When people make these comments they are just expressing their opinions, stupid as they are. I knew opinions would come out of the woodwork if I were to share my WLS decision so I decided early on to not share this info. Only my husband, my daughter and best friend know about the surgery. It's been a year now and I see no reason to change this. It is nobody else's business, I don't care about their opinions, and this is now my life to live as I choose. I don't want people judging me when I eat or drink something that is a variation from the accepted diet. I have too much pressure in my life from other things, I don't want or need this additional hassle from people who are judgemental and want to share their worthless opinion. Other than that.... Life is awesome. LOL

I find no joy in eating

You are still early out so you can't really make any comparisons till you have healed. I still love to eat but I can't eat much at any one time. It gets easier, be patient.
  25. I'll be 60 in July but since I've lost weight I have been told I look like I'm in my 40s, I'll take that LOL.
