Let's Get The Duodenal Switch People Together

I was going to ask this question: Would love your input into why the malabsorption from the DS is different from that of the RNY? And then I found this article. Very good read, I think. There are also several diagrams to compare the two side-by-side that I found to be helpful in visualizing the difference.

Any August 2019 people out there?

That makes sense and I'm sorry I did not initially see your height — was on my phone. Very glad to hear that all of your previous conditions have now disappeared! That's amazing! 😍 I'm hoping to no longer have GERD by revising from the VSG to the RNY too... Bypass is definitely the only option when acid reflux/GERD is present... Glad your surgeon was honest with you about that... God bless you for donating your kidney! You're going to be in much better health very soon, and can take on anything! 😉
  4. I joined a bariatric support group at Torrance Memorial Hospital yesterday and it was so inspiring and incredible to meet other people who are on this same journey! They knew nothing about this forum, by the way. Most of them had a significant other, a sibling or a friend tag along for support — how kind! There was one young lady (Ilana) who came with a friend (Katie) who was taking notes for her and asking all these questions — “playing the devil’s advocate”, as she put it. I shared my story. I was emotional and lengthy, but everyone was supportive… I met 6 people — some who’ve had surgery already (one lady was only 9 days post-op) and some who are still in their waiting phase (I’m the only revision and lowest BMI, but oh well)… There was one lady (Lisa) who lost 40 lbs. in her pre-op diet, had the sleeve done in October 2018 and thereafter lost another 80 lbs. — simply incredible! She said she’d actually like to be 10 lbs. heavier… (You're never going to hear me say that, LOL!) I got everyone’s phone number and created a GroupMe group for us. I’m excited for that to be our safe space; sharing/support portal kind of thing, especially since everyone is local and we can meet up!

Any August 2019 people out there?

Curious as to why surgery is an option at 156 lbs... Is it to resolve the gastroparesis? And is bypass the only option because of GERD?

As @vovo2013 mentioned, I would get the sleeve because of the reflux. I didn’t even have any issues with reflux but after my sleeve, I developed severe GERD and I’m now revising to the RNY mainly because of GERD. Whatever decision you make, I wish you great success and health!

    Revision

I have GERD as well. Currently being considered for revision from VSG to RNY. Tests I've done: barium contrast/swallow/esophagram test CT scan on abdomen and pelvic area gastric emptying/egg sandwich study upper GI endoscopy (several across the years) I hope this helps! Definitely take charge and fight for your health. Ask your doctor/insurance for these tests and as tedious as it may be sometimes, keep following up. GERD is not to be taking lightly. It can, God forbid, lead to esophageal cancer, which the last test listed above is really good at showing with images — signs start as scarring of the esophagus (red scorching marks) while ultimately (if not taken care of) can become whitish cancerous cells. I have had GERD for 7 years and always told doctors that if the cause was surgical (never had even episodic heartburn before my VSG), then the solution has to be too, and I'm finally getting somewhere.

Praying for you Victoria! No more GERD, God willing! Can't wait to hear from you.

    RNY @ 220

I had the vertical sleeve August 2012 and will be revising to the RNY in the next couple of months — surgery date to be determined early August. I'm also on the lower end — BMI wise — at 214 lbs currently (4 lbs more than my pre-VSG weight/193 lbs on the day of surgery). Mostly revising to get rid of GERD (hopefully) amongst several other issues I've developed. You're only 3 days away! Good luck — Wishing you a safe recovery and NO MORE REFLUX!
  11. Behavioral modification is the key... I went to my first session of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and it was incredible! We talked about the purpose behind certain unwanted behaviors as all behavior is developed to serve a purpose, being ready, willing and able, thought mapping (finding the origin/pattern of thought that ultimately contributes to certain unwanted behaviors), and replacing one behavior with another that's as equally rewarding, if not more.

Awesome job! Love CBT!!!! Keep us updated. You should come post in the General Forum in the "Importance Of Doing The Head Work" thread!!!

Thank you! I've been following that thread. Love the podcasts in particular. Ordered the book Bariatric Mindset Success off of the recommendation there. Back to CBT, I'm just getting started, you know? There are therapists that do 12-sessions and that's it (you graduate so to speak), but I do not believe in this approach so I'm taking my time. To keep the weight off for life, I believe I need to dig deep into all my issues... Will definitely share on the thread any valuable insight as I gain more introspection.

    January 2019 sleevers

This is the only post I found on here mentioning Daily Harvest. I've just ordered from them yesterday — highly recommended by a coworker, and I'm really excited to try so many foods I would not normally eat. I am being considered for revision surgery (VSG to RNY) to resolve my GERD. I'm "nutritionally crippled" according to my doctor and need to improve my iron (getting an infusion again soon) and several other macronutrients before I can be operated on. Stalls/plateaus happen all the time! With my sleeve, even though I did not have as much to lose, I remember being stuck at the same weight several times, and sometimes for up to 3 weeks, which I agree with you, can be frustrating and disheartening when you're doing all the right things! But you're probably losing inches, and that's where non-scale victories come in. Your body just needs time to adjust to the changes happening. Dealing with our psychological food issues/addictions, in my opinion, is a great indicator of success long term. It's something I did not take seriously before, to be honest. Even though my doctor used an incorrect technique that has caused my sleeve to look like an hourglass instead of a banana, I've definitely made mistakes that contributed to my weight regain. I have started Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), reading (currently: Bariatric Mindset Success), listing to podcasts (found on here), and joined a support group. I think mapping my thoughts and reading about combating food addiction will help me gain deeper introspection to modify my behavior. I hope you're in a much better place now with your goals. Good luck to you!

    RNY or Sleeve

The decision is entirely yours but here's my story, and I hope it helps with your decision making process: I was sleeved almost 7 years ago. Since then, I have developed severe GERD — never had any issues with acid reflux before surgery... I have become severely anemic (ferritin currently at 4.5), constantly needing iron infusions, developed malabsorption (my doctor says I am "nutritionally crippled"), a thyroid and an autoimmune disorder, a high inflammation/SED rate, and most recently, have been diagnosed with small fiber neuropathy. My sleeve is not to blame for any/all of these things, nor can I pin my complete weight regain on it. Bottomline: I honestly would not consider the sleeve if there is already an existing acid reflux problem. Both surgeries require discipline when it comes to supplementation — the RNY clearly requiring more as not only the stomach but a portion of the intestines is bypassed. Good luck on your journey!
  16. It's such a relief finding people who can relate to what I am going through! I was sleeved August 2012. I'm currently being considered for RNY revision due to GERD and several other reasons. I'm also anxious but excited. Very happy for those of you who are now GERD-free!
