I am looking for a friend

Enlist your boyfriend to help you in maintaining your post-op weight instead of sabotaging you. Work together how to cook and eat healthy meals. Some men, unfortunately, do things to get their women to put on weight, in hopes that they will not leave them. If this is the case, you need to deal with it ASAP.

  5. Be smart. Get your flu shot NOW. Remember that it takes up to 3 weeks to build to full immunity. Don't risk missing your surgery date or disrupting your pre-op program due to flu! You KNOW you are going to be miserable if you get the flu! Remember how bad it feels to be throwing up repeatedly, being nauseous and feverish and aching all over? If you have trouble getting all your nutrients in now, think of how hard it will be when just the thought of eating any thing is revolting. How will you stay adequately hydrated if you have a dehydrating illness? Why risk a trip to the ER or a hospital stay for IV fluids when a simple shot may prevent dehydration? Myths and Misconceptions about the flu shot from the Centers for Disease Control: http://www.cdc.gov/f...conceptions.htm Flu shots are widely available nationwide NOW through drug, discount and grocery stores as well as physician's offices and clinics. Check your local newspapers for special flu shot clinics, sometimes offered at local hospitals and community centers. Your insurance may cover all or part of the cost, but if not, the price is generally between $20-$30. Sure beats missing a week or two of work and trying to keep up with the kids when you feel like death warmed over! Make the flu shot part of your plan to get healthy and stay healthy--this year and every year!

    Steps and beds

I climbed a tall flight of stairs, albeit slowly, to get up to my condo. If you have an abdominal binder, you might want to wear it for the trip home to feel more supported. Some people find it more comfortable to sleep in a recliner at first since it is raised similar to a hospital bed, but that's a matter of preference. Being close to a bathroom is nice in case you need to get up during the night. It's nice to have things tidy when you get home, but more important to be well rested for your surgery. Best wishes for your surgery and recovery!

    frightened

I believe a letter of clearance from your PCP is a standard requirement for virtually all surgeries. Your surgeon's office staff was to blame for not making sure it was included in the application they submitted. They know better than to send an app without one. You'll have to stay on top of the staff there to make sure the situation is quickly rectified and you have confirmation of approval. Take very good notes of any conversations in case things go sideways. Hopefully, you will join us on the loser's bench soon!
  9. The inexpensive long reach comfort wipe on Amazon is a piece of junk. I tossed mine in the trash after the first attempt to use. Buy a good one or don't bother.

    Losing SO slow

Just because someone asks a question doesn't mean you have to answer it--any politician will tell you that! If someone is rude enough to ask how much you've lost (close friends excluded), just smile and say I'm feeling fine, thanks and then change the subject. Now, stop and think for a second. You're frustrated because your weight loss is slowing--but instead of upping the exercise and reviewing your food log for possible changes, you are choosing to eat more. Eh?? Time to reboot your brain and get back on track! Good luck and may your scale reward your new efforts soon!
  11. My program bans salad for at least 6 months.Too hard to digest the raw roughage.

    wine

Alcohol use is discouraged after RNY for 2 reasons. Due to the plumbing changes, your body reacts very differently. You are likely to feel the impact very quickly and much more strongly than usual, especially in your early months. Secondly, you would be consuming calories with no nutritional value. That is normally explained quite clearly in the pre-op materials and discussions.

Favorite brand of unflavored protein? NOT UNJURY! lol

Unflavored means no flavor added, not that the protein itself does not have flavor. You might try Bariatric Advantage. It is a full meal replacement, meaning it has protein plus 50% of most daily vitamins, not just a protein drink. Call to get samples first--always good with any protein mix.

    Pre ops Labs and Diet

Labs are a full spectrum of blood tests and a urine test. No big deal.

    Sugar free ice cream?

Treating yourself occasionally is one thing, a morbidly obese person eating ice cream pre-op regularly is another. That should be a time to be very focused on learning the new food and lifestyle guidelines, giving up the old habits that caused weight gain, and creating new healthful habits. Once the weight loss is complete and healthy habits are ingrained, then have an occasional treat.
  17. With all due respect, your doctor sounds like an idiot. Your body needs Protein to repair itself. How much WLS experience does he have? Is he part of a Bariatric Center of Excellence or is he a regular doctor who just does a few of these now without providing adequate follow up and support? Every doctor has their own program (as you will see from reading the letters here) but yours is so far from the norm, it is very worrisome. I suggest you look at the guidelines published by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (the leading national organization of bariatric doctors) at asmbs.org and discuss these with your doctor. If he is not up to professional standards, try to find another doctor.

    NEED SOME ADVICE

Not a chance I'd do that and I sailed through surgery. I slept for days after I got home. No way could I have coped with a long car ride or dressing up and socializing. I even kept phone calls to a minimum. This is major surgery. If the situation were reversed and he'd just had an appendectomy, would he do it? I think not. He can chose to reschedule the wedding or you can send best wishes and Celebrate with them later. Take care of yourself! Your health is your #1 priority now.

    Sugar free ice cream?

sugar free does not mean it is free of carbs and other things that contribute to obesity. To succeed with RNY, you need to break old habits of making poor food choices by starting now. No more ice cream. Stick with your doctor's food plan and you'll have a much better chance of being able to play with your children and watch them grow up. The surgery is the easy part--getting your head on straight about what it takes to lose the weight and keep it off is the hard part and a lifelong job. The sooner you start making new and better habits, the greater your chances of success!
  21. 1. Call your doctor. The doctor on call will get back to you. 2. Make a note. No more gum.

8 weeks post RNY and nausea

CALL YOUR SURGEON FIRST THING IN THE MORNING FOR ADVICE. IF YOU GET WORSE THROUGH THE NIGHT, GO BACK TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM.
  23. Work with your doctors to get appropriate treatment for the anxiety and depression. Get or adjust your meds, if necessary. If you're struggling, see a therapist or counselor and attend support group meetings. One of the best antidotes to fear is to articulate your concerns. Once you are able to define and speak about your fears, you can see how inconsequential many of them really are and let them go. If you have too much time on your hands, get busy! Do things with friends, take a walk in the lovely autumn sunshine, take on a project, do charity work, clean your house like Martha Stewart, whatever--just don't sit and worry. An idle mind is your enemy. Be thrilled that you are starting a new, happier life! Start making plans for all the wonderful things you are going to do.

    Terrified of the procedure itself!

Calm down. If you've chosen your doctor well, don't worry about the specifics of what is being done inside--you'll be unconscious anyway. This is a bit like renovating an older house. You may have to rearrange some systems like plumbing, but then it's wonderful to have a newly remodeled kitchen and bath. Living in the house is so much easier and more enjoyable after the reno. You have to get past the process and focus on the end results. My surgeon has performed more than 6,000 WL surgeries and is part of a Bariatric Center of Excellence. My hospital is highly rated by various agencies.. I chose carefully and gave a great deal of thought to whether I was ready to commit to the lifelong eating and exercise programs. In the end, it was all about having a vastly improved quality of life and being happy with myself! Looking back, my only regret is that I didn't do this years ago! Keep your eyes on the big picture and don't get lost in the details. You are going to be so happy when you gain control of your weight, your health and your life!
  25. No, this is the fix for an eating disorder---obesity. Do not give up on a really useful tool like WLS for some "what if" scenario. Life is full of risks--you could be hit by a bus tomorrow--but you do the best you can and move forward. Just follow your guidelines and use common sense. If you ever feel like you are going too far in the wrong direction, talk with your surgeon and see a therapist/counselor. Good luck! You are going to be so thrilled when the pounds begin to melt away!
