  1. My mom is 32 years post gastric bypass (the old stomach stapling) and still dumps off carbs....oatmeal or ride for breakfast will get her (and me) every time....so, for some, yes dumpling is forever.

I haven't tried oatmeal yet. I have a friend who eats it every morning! What else is it that your mom dumps with...oatmeal and ?. Thanks for the info.

  2. I actually bled out pretty badly and got 4 units if blood...I was in the hospital for a week. My ulcer was already healing while I was in the hospital as revealed by egd. It was completely healed by three weeks' date=' but I have to be on protonics forever. I felt much better and was able to eat after five days.[/quote']

Have you found any foods that work really well for you? I'm still struggling with eating and it's been two weeks!

  3. Nausea and not wanting to eat were symptoms if my ulcer..just didn't know it. Call your doc.

You're so right! After I read this post I became very sick (about a day or two later). I called my doc who had me come to the ER. They admitted me, gave me fluids and several tests and discovered I too have an ulcer. Now I am home from the hospital and taking Carafate 4X daily and Pepcid 2X a day. Did it take a long time for your ulcer(s) to heal?

  4. There are still some unanswered questions regarding the causes of dumping but it is generally thought to be the result of food being “dumped” too quickly (because the pylorus valve is no longer present) from the pouch into the small intestine. Early dumping usually occurs roughly 30 minutes after eating food high in sugar or simple carbohydrates (aka “simple sugars”). They can create a rapid increase in blood sugars (hyperglycemia). The rule of thumb is that white foods (e.g. potatoes' date=' rice, Pasta, white bread, etc.) are usually simple carbohydrates. The sugars rapidly pull Water out of the bloodstream and into the small intestine. A number of the symptoms of dumping including severe diarrhea can result. With “late” dumping, the body responds to the rapid rise in blood sugars with an increase in insulin to process the sugars. The increased insulin can cause the blood sugars to “crash” producing low blood sugar (reactive hypoglycemia) and dumping symptoms follow. Symptoms may or may not include vomiting. It is called late dumping because it usually occurs two to three hours after eating but can occur as much as twelve hours later. The delay is partially explained by the time needed for the brain to signal the pancreas to produce more insulin in response to the blood sugar spike. It then takes time for the pancreas to produce the insulin and for the insulin to make its way to the small intestine via the bloodstream. Because the intestine is shorter as a result of the surgery, the partially digested food passes more quickly through the intestine and blood sugar levels may have returned to normal before the insulin reaches the intestine - which is why the blood sugar crashes. Somewhere between 25% to 50% of patients never experience dumping. It is difficult to determine an accurate number because some folks experience dumping without realizing what it is and others think they are experiencing dumping when the cause of their symptoms may be something else. Of those that do experience dumping, about two-thirds experience early dumping with the remaining one-third experiencing late dumping. Although decidedly unpleasant, dumping is rarely serious. As you can see from the responses above, dumping may occur for years following surgery and possibly even for life. Or it may subside and even disappear over time as the body makes adjustments to its new physiology.[/quote']

Thank you DL! That was super informative! :)

  5. Well ladies, I ended up in the ER on Tuesday and they admitted me. They did several tests and bloodwork, then finally an EGD. Seems I have an ulcer. Thankfully it wasn't bleeding on its own yet, but when the dr touched it with the camera it bled. I caught it just in time. Now I have to figure out how to take this Carafate 4x a day and space it properly so it's an hour before a meal or 2-3 hours after a meal, and an hour before or after all medications. What?!? I don't know about you but I "graze" throughout the day. This is going to be tricky. Hopefully this is what has been giving me so much pain for so many months. I'll guess we'll see when this heals, right?

  6. Hi Everyone! I'm newer to this group and I am so thankful I found you all! I had surgery July 2013, and I've lost 135 lbs. My starting weight was 268. I've had several complications and to be quite frank this has been a journey I wouldn't do again! I had a stricture at 9 weeks post-op. They had to go in 4 times with the balloon to open it. Nausea is an everyday part of my life and I have experienced this awful pain in my left side, at rib level, for months! This pain comes and goes but when it's here the nausea is awful! I have a hard time sleeping because nothing helps the pain, which lasts 4-7 days. Then it goes away again. My surgeon did exploratory surgery, and other than cleaning up some scar tissue, he didn't find anything. I don't have my gall-bladder (which would be on the right side anyway). As I write this, I am home from work (sick) with this pain again, nausea, etc. None of my doctors seem to know what's going on (the surgeon says this isn't surgery related [but I didn't have it pre-op] and my primary is saying the surgeon needs to figure it out!). Has ANYONE out there had anything remotely similar to this?!? Please help!

  7. Im by no means vain' date=' but has anyone else noticed that since the RNY a drastic increase in grey hair? for 5 years prior to surgey i have had a small wisp of grey hair in the front of my hairline and it was kinda cool looking. Today i seriously noticed it looks like i painted a grey room with out a hat. Anyone else experiencing this? RJ[/quote']

Nope no gray...oh wait, I lost most of my hair!!! It's finally re-growing and it's coming in curly! What the heck!?! :)

  8. The doctors just discovered i have a stricture. Has this happened to anyone else her. I'm so afraid and frustrated.
Hello! I had a stricture that required four procedures to open it. The area my food had to pass through was a mere 4 mm (or is it cm). I would vomit anything that wasn't liquid and even some liquid would come up. The procedure itself was easy. I would feel nauseous for a day or two following the procedure (but that was nothing new for me). I DID lose my weight very quickly because of this. It's scary but you should be just fine. I'm now at a 12 mm/ cm and no more vomiting. Hang in there!

  9. Does anyone have Constipation? I only go twice a week. I take one collace daily but that does not seem to do the trick. I am 6 weeks out and only eating Protein and my many Vitamins including Iron. Any suggestions? Surgery date 9/4/2013 HW 259 RYN 238' date=' this week 209[/quote'] Hi! I am 15 mos post surgery and suffer from awful constipation! There were times I would lay on the floor, in the bathroom and cry! I swear I have a hemorrhoid or two from the straining. I would go 8-9 days without having a BM. Then at one of my support meetings someone told me about Miralax. I confirmed with my dr that it's fine to take and non-addicting. I put it in my hot tea in the morning and at night. It works great! No more constipation for this girl. I hope it does the trick for you. Constipation is the worst thing!! Good luck! :) HW 268, CW 131, DOS 7/18/12

  10. @Veesoul....That's not true as you have read. My doc said no alcohol until a year after surgery. When you do you have to be careful because you will get drunk or tipsy really quick. You also could stand a chance of dumping if the drink is too sweet. Just be careful and if you decide to drink just remember moderation.

DoubleD that makes total sense! :)

  11. I had the RNY when I was 22. I lost 175 lbs. I ended up getting a Tummy Tuck 5 years later because I tried everything under the sun to get a tight stomach. Believe me' date=' no amount of creams or sit ups will get rid of saggy skin. Period.[/quote']

Karen your body looked exactly like mine does now, the frowning belly button and all. How painful was your surgery and recovery?

  12. I know this might be tmi. But does anyone now get acne/boil ( pimple bumps )on their body? Ie inner thighs' date=' underarms, under your breast and even on a stretch mark? My dermatologist called it hidradenitis? I just wanted to know if it got better after weight loss.[/quote']

In my lifetime I have gotten one on a stretch mark. They're very painful! I'm not sure if it changes for the better or for the worse after surgery...sorry!

  13. I either get a Decaf Skinny Cinnamon Dulce latter (hot or iced)' date=' or venti green tea (4 S&L). I will say, my husband got me what was suppose to be a skinny chai latte iced at the great wolf lodge last Saturday and I drank about a quarter cup if it before realizing it wasn't sugar free! I totally dumped. Felt like hell. Now I only shop my local Starbucks where they know me![/quote']

That is the worst possible scenario! I've had that happen! As soon as I realize there's sugar or caffeine I take that drink right back into the nearest Starbucks. It's very frustrating to pay that money for a beverage and not have it right. Like you, my local Sbux Baristas know my situation and most of the time get the drink right for me. I prefer to go to the stores that I am familiar with too! Dumping is the worst thing ever!

  14. Hi' date=' I am set to have my RNY on 10/22. This whole journey my hubby has been scared about the post op me. My mother had this surgery 12 years ago. She lost her weight, found a bf, and divorced my dad. They were married for 20 years. I've been married for 3 years but with my husband for 10 years. We have 2 kids together & I am so in love with him as I was from the start. He is so scared I will be like my mother and hurt him. I know I would never do such a thing.. I love him & I adore our life we've built together. How can I make him realize I'm not going to do that? He is so sure it will happen. =([/quote']

I have a different take on some this. My husband was very very supportive of me having the surgery. He would say things like "don't lose too much" and we went to all the pre-surgery meetings together. After several complications (and he was at my side) my fat seemed to melt away! I lost 134 lbs in 8 mos. Now 15 mos post op and I feel like my marriage is in shambles! I DID lose a lot of weight due to those mentioned complications and I am now a size 4. My body has changed sooo drastically! Thankfully I don't have much extra skin at all, but my chest is just about nothing! You can see my ribs through what's left of my breasts. He doesn't touch me, says I need to "eat a hamburger...or two". I don't know if he must lacks security in our 25 year relationship or what. I'm going to counseling, he refuses. So yes, in my case the surgery DEFINITELY affected my marriage, and ours was very strong!

  15. My surgeon says wait 18 months before tt or noob job. I've gone from 42dd to38d but before weight gain I was a comfy 36c' date=' I hate these big boobs they can leave @ anytime.[/quote']

18 mos is do-able. Thanks for the information! I don't want to have a huge chest again, but I would like to have something that at least resembles a tt. Lol! I want them to look natural and not be an attention grabber. :)

  16. I am confused as well. Why no caffeine? I drink coffee every morning ? Should I not be?

My Doctor said caffeine can cause dehydration due to its laxative effect. Since I struggle (daily) to get my fluids in, I need to steer clear of caffeine. He didn't recommend that just for me though. He tells that to all of his patients.

  17. I don't want mine to shrink! And the other day my husband wasn't too happy about my butt shrinking' date=' either![/quote']

My boobs went from a 40D to a 34 barely B. I swear they're like shriveled up dates with nipples! TMI I'm sure! My butt too is gone and what's left is three-four small rolls of skin...NOT attractive! I need some reconstruction ASAP but I just can't afford that right now! This weight loss journey has taken a HUGE toll on my marriage! Good luck to you. BW 268 CW 131 DOS 7/18/12
