  1. I don't have bipolar but have anxiety/depression, and my bariatric nurse has talked to me a lot about approval when you've got mental stuff going on. The big questions I had to answer were whether or not I'd been hospitalized for a psychiatric problem (which was no), and whether I was being treated for it (which was yes). My doc had to fill out a form saying I was mentally stable and ready for surgery. Louisville, KY ~ RNY June 2013 ~ Sent from my iPad using RNYTalk
  2. Ugh this scares me. I go in for my psych eval on the 15th. It is with the bariatric clinic, so everyone uses the same therapist for the eval. I'm nervous because I'm on Klonopin, Paxil, and Effexor and its prescribed by my reg doc for social anxiety and depression. I marked on my packet that I've been through emotional abuse. I went to a therapist last spring for a little while, but he said I didn't need therapy! I feel so good right now that I'm hoping I will sail through. Most of my issues were from losing my father last summer and a bad marriage that ended years ago, so I am better now. And I get free therapy from the clinic for life after surgery! Anyway, get a second opinion!!! Don't give up! Louisville, KY ~ RNY June 2013 ~ Sent from my iPad using RNYTalk

  4. I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this. I started looking into wls a couple of years ago, and was hooked on the sleeve. Now, I have decided in RNY for a bunch of reasons even though the sleeve seems to be extremely popular right now: 1. My surgeon doesn't trust the sleeve yet. He's says there's not enough research, RNY has higher success rate, and he worries about the stomach. That is, he doesn't want to toss 90% of my stomach in the trash can after a rather "new and hip" surgery. He only uses it for folks who are too high risk for RNY as a stepping stone. Same for all the surgeons in my clinic. 2. Insurance in my state usually doesn't cover it unless your BMI is over 50. I'm at 43 right now. 3. Guess what all will slip right deliciously through that sleeve??? BEN & JERRY's. GRAETER'S. Milkshakes! chocolate fondue!!! Sugary drinks! Mmmmm.... Pathetic as it is, I NEED dumping syndrome. Ice cream....mmmm...gelato...mmmm... Y get the idea. I'm following a lot of blogs of people that have had success with VSG, but it's just not for me. I'm going ALL in. 6. The sleeve isn't covered much in my state (KY) and my surgeons office doesn't use it unless you are at too high risk for RNY. Louisville, KY ~ RNY June 2013 ~ Sent from my iPad using RNYTalk
  7. $60,000 can't be right. I'm anxious to hear the outcome of this! I have Humana and will also pay 20%. I use Norton Healthcare for everything, and have already called and checked with them about pre-pay since I've read so many folks having to pay upfront. She said I wouldn't owe a dime the day of surgery, and they would bill me and start a payment plan. I'm so grateful because I could not do this without help! 12. My knees went out last July. After months of suffering with it and not being able to go up stairs, I went to the doc and was diagnosed with Grade 4 Chondromalacia (Runner's Knee or patellofemoral syndrome). I don't run. I got it from being overweight, stairs at work, and lifting my father who I cared for at home. squatting and lifting were the main culprits according to my doc. Is anyone else battling this? I'm on Celebrex (which is useless), tried PT and a chiropractor. I'm really frustrated because it is keeping me from working out like I want. I'm hoping that after surgery when the weight drops it will get much better, but I'm scared because I know the damage is already done. You should have seen my MRI ???? Anyway, I'm hoping to hear that some of you had this prior to surgery and have been relieved of the pain (at least a little) after weight loss. I don't want to have knee surgery.... rny June 2013 ???? Sent from my iPad using RNYTalk

  18. I'm thinking he will put me on something. My BMI is 43 right now...
  19. I had to do 6 months with my doc, but it wasn't specific. I read about folks doing a liquid diet sort of thing right before surgery...that's what I was wondering about... Sent from my iPad using RNYTalk
  20. I don't think it matters what you lose in the pre-qualification process. They do the waiting game to weed folks out that aren't committed. I didn't lose squat and I'm getting approved!
  21. Good for you for making this decision while you are young! I'm 35 and wish I had done this in my 30s - I've battles weight all of my life. Good luck to you!
  22. Are most of you using HMR shakes? I was on that diet last fall. I actually like the shakes, but with fruit, sugar free fat free pudding, or sugar free syrups. I thought they were tasty...
