Whew! That was intense!
alc1071 replied to mhcastellow's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Losing 45 lbs in the first month is awesome! And as Kristy mentioned stalls are common. I stalled between weeks 3 and 4 but then all of a sudden the scale started moving again and I dropped 5 lbs quickly. I think it's just our bodies adjusting to all the changes/weight loss. I also walk about 35 minutes a day. Funny you should mention a bike, today I went for a 4 mile bike ride - first time I've ridden a bike in I don't even know how long! I definetly wouldn't have attempted that 50 lbs ago! It sounds like you are on track and keep up the good work! -
My main reason for having the RNY was for health reasons too in hopes of improving my type 2 diabetes along with many other issues that seem to go along with it (HBP, high cholesterol, high triglycerides). I've had diabetes for 10 years and was taking 3 different insulin injections and pretty high doses and really tired of being a "human pin cushion" I'm 5 weeks post op and just came off the last of my insulin meds. I also got off my blood pressure meds. For the first 2 weeks my sugars were higher than I expected them to be post op especially because I wasn't even eating any carbs. Your body has gone through major surgery and similar to when you're sick, your sugars can be elevated as your body is trying to heal itself. But then all of a sudden it was like someone flipped a switch and my sugars came down to normal. And as the weight goes down, the insulin resistance seems to keep improving.

Are you getting all your fluids in? And do you wait 30 minutes after eating before you start drinking fluids again (to avoid "washing" the food through too quickly)?

my surgery was in Monterrey but I live in Wilton CT
alc1071 replied to denisse g's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm in CT too but had my surgery at Hartford Hospital which is kind of far from Wilton. My mother had surgery 6 years ago at Danbury Hospital but I'm thinking Norwalk would probably be closer to you. You can try googling "bariatric surgery Norwalk ct" and research them. -

Keep up the good work, it shows! How much have you lost so far? -
I'm 4 weeks post op and have been making lemonade (with Splenda instead of sugar) and have not had any issues with it.
-
Yes! I stalled at about two weeks post op and it lasted about a week. Just stick to your plan and the scale will start moving again soon. I think it's your body catching up with all the changes. Many people post about this and about 2-3 weeks post op seems to be very common.

Heightened sense of smell?
alc1071 replied to w106fox's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes!! I noticed this too that my sense of smell post op seemed heightened. I was in the grocery store about 1 1/2 - 2 weeks post op and the smell of the pre made/prepared foods (like rotisserie chicken, etc) was really noticeable to me. I'm 4 weeks post op now and it doesn't seem quite as strong as it was initially. -
My surgery is tomorrow! omg
alc1071 replied to NycGal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good luck tomorrow! Before you know it you'll be waking up in recovery and on your way to a healthier new you! I had my Rny surgery exactly 4 weeks ago and feel terrific. Getting up and walking in the hospital really helped. And once you're cleared for water just remember to sip, sip, sip!! -
Three months out.......need more food to eat
alc1071 replied to wonderwoman75's topic in Food and Nutrition
Have you tried baked ricotta? Or crustless quiche? I've made both and they were good. http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detail.asp?recipe=2438931 http://www.froedtert.com/SpecialtyAreas/BariatricSurgeryProgram/Recipes/CheesyCrustlessQuiche.htm -
I'm sure you didn't hurt your pouch. If you read some of the posts, some people are leaving the hospital already eating puréed foods. Like you, my surgeon calls for 2 weeks on full liquids. I'm 2 1/2 weeks post op and just moved over to soft foods this past Wednesday. I would follow what your surgeon recommends and not worry too much about the mushed up avocado.

Just Had a Gastric Bypass on April 3 2013...
alc1071 replied to NewLife71's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery was 3/27 but my Dr keeps us on a 2 week liquid diet (I should move to soft foods by the end of the week). One of the things that has really helped me to get my protein in is Unjury protein products. You can order a sample pack that gives you about 10 packets fairly inexpensive. I like the Chicken soup flavor as a broth or the Strawberry Sorbet with crystal light lemonade. Both give you 21 g of protein plus you're getting your liquids in at the same time. Personally, I started feeling so much better when I increased my protein levels (getting 60-70 g of protein every day) and it helps boost your energy too. -
What kind of discomfort did you have?
alc1071 replied to Nel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon uses the steri-strips too. He said no stitches to be removed, the strips will fall off on their own about 2 weeks when the incisions have healed. -
Bowel prep is killing me!
alc1071 replied to Jessica9190's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You might want to bring Desitin with you too. I ended up using some and it definitely helped ease the raw butt! -
I had surgery on Weds 3/27 and stopped taking the pain meds on Sun 3/31. Each day after that I was feeling a little bit better. Now a little over a week out and I'm starting to feel like myself again. The first week is the hardest but you'll start feeling better soon, hang in there! : >)

Bowel prep is killing me!

I had a grape flavor magnesium citrate. It was a sweet nasty drink - like a fizzy sweet tart drink. -
March 2013 Post Op "A New Life 2013"
alc1071 replied to ElleG's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had milk last night for the first time post op (1 week out) and didn't have any issues. -
Kelly, the meatloaf muffins sound yummy (once I get to solids). Do you have a recipe you can post?
-
Good luck tomorrow! I am exactly one week post op today. I was mostly just sore. The pain was not too bad, tolerable with the pain meds. Make sure you ask for the meds when you need them (I didn't have a pain pump). I found that the more I got up and walked, the better I felt.

I had a drain tube put in during surgery. It was not something that was discussed prior to surgery so I was a little surprised to have one when I woke up in recovery. When I asked the Dr why he said he did it on a case by case basis depending on how much fluids were draining. He said the body will reabsorb the fluids but if there is a lot he likes to go with a drain tube to help pull some of it out. Mine was removed prior to discharge on the 2nd day. I was really not liking the idea of removing it at all for fear of pain. But it didn't really hurt, it just felt "weird" because you do feel it moving as it's being pulled through/out but not painful. I actually found it easier to get up/out of bed once it was out and the stitch wasn't pulling anymore.

Leah, the first couple days of the pre op diet are the hardest. It seems to get easier after 3-4 days. Are you able to eat sugar free jello, sf popsicles, and diet snapple/crystal light? Those helped me feel more full. I also found that eating raw vegetables (baby carrots) filled me up more than cooked vegetables and all the crunching helped "trick" my brain into feeling satisfied. Post op I don't even feel hungry at all (1 week out). Good luck, you can do it!
-
I'm one week post op today too! Not hungry at all either. I am a stomach sleeper so that has been an adjustment, I've been sleeping on my back and propping my self up with several pillows. Everyday I've felt a little better and starting to feel like myself again. I checked the scale this morning and I'm down 8 lbs since surgery day!

Just had surgery
alc1071 replied to amanda.rodriguez84's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good luck today! Walking in the hospital will help with the gassy feeling. And once you start on liquids, remember to sip, sip, sip. I'm one week post op today and each day I feel better than the day before. -

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that everything goes well for you tomorrow. Hopefully you are on your way to recovery after that. You've been through a lot. Healing prayers being sent your way! -
7 days out and just dont think i could handle another shake
alc1071 replied to crazedteacher's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't know if you've tried any of the Unjury products? I ordered their sample pack and found I really like their Chicken Soup flavor and also their Strawberry Sorbet flavor (especially when mixed with lemonade crystal light!). And it's 21 g of protein.
