  1. My username name is pearliture on MFP. Anyone else feel free to friend me. I had my surgery on February 20' date=' 2013. Currently, trying to work through mushy stage of eating. Have had a lot of frustrating moments with the different food stages. My surgeon says my pouch is super picky but if in 2 weeks I am still struggling he is going to do tests to see if I possibly have a stricture. He is hesitating with doing unnecessary tests because I just feel sick and pressure with anything other than liquid and I don't throw up. So we'll see. I currently only consume 1 oz at each meal.[/quote']

Just sent a request...we are surgery buddies :)

  2. I say ask your doctor. Mine really really requests that you stick with bariatric chewables for at least the first couple of years. I have tried Celebrate and Bariatric Advantage and for the multi I really like Celebrate better than Bariatric, but there are lots of favors and I haven't tried them all yet. I also take the Calcium chewy bites because they remind me of starburst, but I have to take 2 at a time because of the dosage. I agree that you have to find one that works for you.

  3. Just putting it out there that my program has a psychiatrist on staff that all he does is bariatric patients. He takes very few insurances, and even though he took mine the visit still cost 200. But it could have cost 500-600 I believe. Keep your head up and try to remember that this is just a small barrier in this process.

Have you talked to the doctor about recommending someone? Surely they know some surgery friendly psychs?

  4. May surgeon puts you on Prilosec for the first 12 months post surgery. To help control the acid in your pouch and remnant stomach. Not so much for heartburn but to keep the levels low too prevent ulcers. I didn't have issues with heartburn before, but I take it everyday. It is a 4 dollar prescription. Just a thought that maybe you should be taking it anyways.

  5. Well, I had LASIK 4 years ago and clearly your "friend" has never had it or she wouldn't compare. But that's kind of beside the point.

I have been fortunate that most people that I have told have been supportive, to the point that many people at work have signed up to participate in a few 5ks with me! However, I didn't tell many people before I had the surgery for that exact reason. Sometimes people are fearful of how you are going to change. What if you don't want to be their friend anymore? What if you are skinnier than them? What if you can be more successful professionally? What if you find a beautiful person to be with? It can be any number of reasons. I see my surgery as elective, only in the fact that I ELECTED to have it. I elected to tackle this monkey that has been on my back for 29 of the 33 years i have been on this earth. I elected to stop making myself feel like a failure because i couldnt do this on my own. We all have our own reasons and they are all equally valid.

But if your friend would rather you end up with more difficult health conditions, or dead before you should be, then I guess it is pretty clear where the friendship ranks?

I worry that sounds harsh, but a few years ago I went threw several losses that cost me almost everything and I had to rebuild my life. I figured out what it means to be a real friend.

By chance, just to balance my perspective a bit, could she just be scared for you?

  6. Hey guys!

I'm still pre-op' date=' hopefully getting my surgery scheduled soon. But I'm itching to start my half sleeve. Does anybody have experience with tattoos they had before surgery and how they were affected after weightloss? I'll wait if I have to but I've been putting off the tattoo for a long time already. Thank u for your help![/quote']

Thanks for asking this...I got an awesome tattoo in LA last summer on my back before surgery and I am afraid it will deflate...going to wait for anymore until I have let the majority of my weight.

  7. I'm still trying to figure out how long I want to take too.

I could probably swing 1.5 to 2 weeks with what vacation I have but I could also do STD but that requires telling people at work what I'm doing and I'm not sure I want to do that.

I don't really want everyone I work with to know and I'm sure there'd be questions.

You don't have to tell anyone except your HR manager. I just told people I was having some surgery done. People do ask questions, but i just responded with "im ok, thanks for asking" and generally people left it there. STD can be a great option if you have it. For me, it enabled me to have some vacation time remaining for the rest of the year.

  8. I log on MFP, but I find that it doesn't make me obsess about what I eat. I have eaten some things that some one here would say were 'bad' or whatever, but I like to log those things as a way of showing myself that I can have a mini cupcake and still fit within my calorie and Protein goals. I had this surgery at 33 to hopefully avoid many of the comorbibities that can be associated with obesity, but I have struggled with my weight my entire life. I hoarded food, ate in secret, and all other manners of unhealthy eating and I am set on not continuing those unhealthy patterns. I find that MFP actually helps with that because I am being honest about it AND and paying attention to how I feel when I consume. I never thought that I would be satisfied with a few bites of really good bread instead of half a loaf. But when I realize I am satisfied and still within my nutritional goals for the day? That is a success for me.

Success is truly defined by everyone individually, it isn't always the number on the scale. For me, I want to have a healthy relationship with food, be active and love life. For now, logging what I eat seems to be helping me achieve these goals.

Sorry..this is a little long? Oops.

  9. One other thing about the NuvaRing (I used it when I was married) don't use Tampax Pearl Tampons. Since they spread horizontally mine kept pulling the ring out. Can't say that happens to everyone, but it did to me.

  10. Knowing the health benefits of fruits and veggies I just don't get it. Yes Protein first' date=' rah rah rah. That I understand. I truly don't get the no carb for 75% of weight loss rule....maybe no crappy carbs, but I don't understand no carbs. :/. My doc and I would have an argument!

I go see my nutritionist on Monday and being that I was living an almost vegetarian life pre op I am struggling with all of the Protein because it feels like there is no room for veggies in my life right now. I am hoping that she will help me balance a bit more. Dairy makes the BM difficult if you know what I mean and while I don't mind compromising a bit on meat I need balance in my life.

  11. How bad is it?I am hoping to be sleeved but have recently learned that may not be an option due to 2 forms of severe reflux. The mal absorptive portion of RNY is what scares me most. I want gastric surgery to be healthier not to trade my problems in for new ones' date=' ya know? To top it off I already have malabsorption issues due to IBS, not so much that it affects my life but bad enough to have lost a child due to a condition linked with a lack if folic acid... something I took more than required of during pregnancy. Furthermore, we plan to have another child after I lose weight as my current health makes it impossible and unsafe.

I don't yet have a surgeon so I was hoping to gain some insight here. How big of an issue is it or can it be? For those of you with major absorption issues, would you do it again? We live on a very tight budget, how much do you all spend on supplements? Any further info would be much appreciated! TIA![/quote']

I can't give you much expert advice as far as malabsorptive issues long term as I am only 4 weeks post op, but the Vitamins are a bit expensive, however, I don't spend near as much money on food :). I get my Vitamins from either Celebrate or Bariatric Advantage. Both are specially made for bariatric surgery patients. You can check them out online and price about how much they would cost you. I wasn't on any medications prior to surgery so taking pills daily is a change for me, but i know that no matter what may come in my future life that I am will be healthier overall than if I had stayed at my morbidly obese weight.

I hope that helped at least a little. I feel like your GP might even be able to help you begin to consider if RNY is a viable option for you before you find a surgeon.
