I am having RNY in 3 weeks and am starting to think about getting stocked up for my recovery and new healthy lifestyle. I would like to know:
What types of things helped with wound care?
What Protein sources you liked best?
What did you buy to eat (or should I say for nourishment?
Thanks!

Now that I am on a high Protein diet in preparation for surgery (date yet to be determined) I find myself getting very excited over the protein content of food. I was at the grocery store looking at some pre-cooked chicken and steak strips, both had about 20 grams of protein in them. I think I let out a verbal 'WooHoo!' Am I just a iittle strange or do others get excited over high protein content?

After seeing the dietitian yesterday and following her instructions of eating high density Protein with crunchy fruits and veggies I am amazed at how well that satisfies me all day. I'm very thankful my doctor does not require a liquid pre-op diet but I do need to be as healthy as possible. I am also to take 5 minute walks 6 times a day. I was able to easily sneak away from my desk and walk around the bottom floor of our parking garage 3 times today. I made a '5 Minute Walk' playlist with songs around 5 minutes long. One day at a time...anxiously awaiting a surgery date. I'm very thankful for this support! Guess I'm just kind of chatty today...thanks for listening

Atkins and Southbeach are low carb. Atkins is high Protein.Basically eat your meats/proteins first...then veggies...then fruit and stay away from white flour' date=' sugar, white bread, Pasta, rice and potatoes.[/quote']
Exactly what my dietitian said. High density Protein, crunchy fruits and veggies and high Fiber, low fat/low sugar grains/bread. She said Aunt Millie's was a good brand of bread to buy. Just make sure there is more Fiber than fat and sugar.

Thank you for bringing this topic up! I will have a lot of loose skin too and am willing to try different things. In addition to exercise and Water, I'll definitely try some of the ideas listed here. I have 200+ pounds to lose and lose skin has been on my mind a lot lately. I'm over 40 and the youthful elacisticy I'm sorry to say is fading away.

REMEMBER HOW we used to say' date=' "I will start that diet tomorrow." Well all that is over kiddys. This is our time let's take it back. For me tomorrow will be the end of an old life and the beginning of a new one... I refuse to be negative about this no matter what I go through. I am ready... Sept 18 2012 is now officially declared awesome day...[/quote']Good luck to you, sir! I hope it all goes well and congratulations on Awesome Day!

That's great to know! I have bcbs il and my info' date=' was submitted Thursday. Gonna call them tomorrow and follow up.[/quote']
I have BCBS too. The approval request letter was sent on 9/10 and on 9/14 I received a call from the bariatric center that the surgery was approved. I was amazed! And happy! I hope everyone's insurance approval goes smoothly!!

So i am 5'4 about 260 pounds (I will find out for sure on Wed at my pre-op). My goal is 135-140. I am not sure what size that is' date=' but i am hoping its between 4-6. My doctor said i will probably be between 130-145.[/quote']
I can't wait to be able to ride a roller coaster, fit in a stadium seat without pain and bruising, fit comfortably in an airplane seat and buckle the seatbelt without having to use an extender, walk without pain, and be able to use/do anything without having to worry about a weight limit. I. CAN'T. WAIT!!!

Mine was a combination of things many of what has been mentioned here. Personal hygiene is becoming difficult, my knees are extremely arthritic and I've had a lot of breathing issues lately. I've thought of bariatric surgery for years but now seems the right time. God keeps holding the doors open and everything is falling nicely into place. I know it's going to be hard work I know this is the tool that is finally going to give me hope!!

Congratulations on 8 lbs down!!! I sure would like to say I'm 8 down from my highest. I was 306 or 307 initial consult and 311 last Monday. I said to someone else' date=' I'm addicted to the Women's Fashion on Pinterest!![/quote']
I never thought about looking at Women's fashion on pinterest! I just took a look and saw some super cute things! It's slowly sinking in that I'll be able to wear things like that. I could cry!! (happy tears!!)

I want to be able to wear any top and not worry about it being long enough to cover my belly apron. And I want to be a size in which I can go to any store in the mall and find something to wear. That would simply be amazing!!

My Dr doesn't require a pre-op diet but does expect you to lose weight prior to surgery. Have to lose 20 lbs. I actually wish there was a pre op diet because I'm in that same awful familiar cycle of dieting. I'm thinking of starting Protein Shakes as at least one Meal Replacement now (no surgery date yet) and increasing that to 2 meals later...maybe all three. Thoughts?

Thank you for the response...that's good to hear. Is it bothering you at all? I occasionally have discomfort with mine but it's manageable.

I' date=' too, have been overweight moat of my life. When the Nut asked me what was my ideal weight, I just sort of looked at her like...uh, the smallest I ever remember being as an adult is 227.[/quote']
LOL! I was asked the same question. I chose 175 because I remember I weighed 181 in the 8th grade and wanted to be less than that. Right now I'm 5'7 and 394. Highest ever was 402...I about passed out . So 175 sounds like a dream! I also find myself looking at 'regular sized' clothes. It's exciting to think about!
Surgery Postponed

I have decided to postpone my surgery which was to be 10/29. My mother passed away suddenly and unexpectedly nearly 2 weeks ago. This has been a great time of stress and grief in my life and I'm just not ready for another shock to my body. I will reschedule a few months down the road once I feel like I'm ready to handle the next step in this journey called life.
