How much did you lose pre-op?

I only had an 8 day pre-op liquid diet. I was asked to lose between 10-20lbs and I lost around 13lbs during those 8 days. My surgeon was more concerned that I just followed the liquid diet to make sure my liver would shrink and soften up to make the surgery that much easier and less risky for him. Good luck and I'm sure you'll do fine!
  2. Detoxing from gluten can really throw you for a loop too. I was a huge bread/pasta person (also diabetic), and while my sugar was in the normal range (albeit the low range), the first few days of my pre-op liquid diet I felt like I was drunk (dizzy, light headed, etc...) and once my system got detoxed, I felt pretty good by about day 4.
  3. I am on day 5 today and I'm averaging between 4-8oz per hour and didn't really have too many issues with the liquids after day 2. I find that plain Water is harder to drink (especially cold), so I have most of my liquids at room temperature and alternate between Powerade zero, and water with crystal light in it. I often think I'm going to have a leak of some sort this early in the game, but according to my WLS binder the surgeon provided me with, I should be at 4-8oz/hour at this point, and be able to take in more fluids by weeks 3&4.
  4. 5 days post op here, and yes, my stomach makes lots of gurgling noises and other strange noises when just drinking liquids. I don't think it's anything to worry about as most have posted here
  5. Gastric sleeves are becoming more common in Canada, just the wait lists are astronomical as they tend to review on a case by case basis and will offer it to the 35+ BMI patients with co-morbidities before someone with out. I got put on a list in August 2012 for a program launching in January 2013. I just had my surgery performed on December 9 2013 in Canada and completely covered by medicare. I think I'm one of the lucky ones.... Good luck though!
  6. Good luck! I'm sure you will do great and make sure to check in with us!
  7. Day 2 was the worst for me, and they just released me and I'm now home on day 4 post op. Feeling much better, and the gas pain is tolerable, but man me and this new stomach have some serious issue to work out on the toilet LOL. I seriously understand why they say never trust a fart! ha ha. But being serious, I'm feeling much better today, got a good rest last night for the first time in a few nights and just keeping track of my fluid and protein intake now...I have to keep remembering to tell myself to slow down when I'm sipping a shake, as it seems to go down very easy. Haven't been sick yet so that is good. Good luck to those who are coming up in December and to those of you who are over the hump in post-op!
  8. I too am having bad gas pains swallowing water. I have been mixing my 1 oz cup half cranberry juice and half water to get things rolling and to keep my blood sugar from going too low. I will try the suggestion here of breathing out through the nose when you swallow. Also it's only day 2 for me and I've just started passing gas but need to use a pillow over my abdomen as it hurts to much to just try and push. Walking at least three times a day around the unit for about 20 minutes each time doesn't seem to help. I think I will ask the wife to bring my Gas-X strips in with her when she comes to visit as the nurses only have that stuff in chewable form...

    Surgery Is Tomorrow

Good luck! I'm sure you will do great!
  10. Didn't get a chance to ask yet but I will tomorrow. I am assuming everything was good since he went through with the procedure. I had lost 13 lbs on the 8 day pre-op liquid diet also.
  11. Yay! I'm on the post op side of the fence now! I was still half out of it when the surgeon said everything went well with the surgery. Surprised that they won't be starting me on liquids until my swallow test tomorrow and I was out of surgery at 3 pm. Pain isn't too bad with the meds.... more of a discomfort/pressure in my chest and stomach and I have 6 (count em) 6 small incisions. Overall I'm doing pretty well! Hope everyone else had great success that went in as well!
  12. Good luck to all the December 9th folks including myself! Trying not to think about it much...Bag packed, check-in at 10am tomorrow!

Anyone Else Have Trouble With Pre Op Diet?

I'm on day 6 right now of full liquids. It was the week from hell too. The company where I work is pretty small (11 employees), so when it's lunch time, most of the guys get take out. So I had to sit through smelling stuff like McDonalds, A&W, Subway, and to top it off Wednesday they had a lunch meeting and got Papa Johns pizza for the office. I started this diet and have been telling myself every day to stick it out so I can have the best possible outcome from my surgery. My wife has been very understanding, but my 2 year old daughter still tried to stick a piece of shortbread cookie in my mouth today because she doesn't understand why daddy can't eat. Tomorrow is Clear Liquids, surgery on Monday, and I'm hoping the hardest part is over doing this on a normal sized stomach.
  14. Has anyone tried the Kirkland Signature Complete Nutrition shake (vanilla flavored) from costco? I usually get the Premiere Protein (30g) chocolate ones there, and happened to see these. Didn't want to buy a case of 32 in case they didn't taste great. These only have 9g of protein per shake but apparently have less sugar (25%) in them then Ensure.

    Fitbit Vs Up

I believe the Fitbit Force tracks your sleep as well.

    Fitbit Vs Up

I haven't read up much on the UP, but I read a few reviews on the Fitbit Force and I'm picking one up for myself as soon as they are available in Canada (Dec 9th I think?). I like the Force because I won't have to wear a watch and a band as well where the Force has a display on it. I think you can also hit the button on your Force to see some of your daily stats without having to sync it beforehand which is a nice bonus to see how far from some of the goals you are.
  17. My work had a pizza party for lunch too, so I got to sit around and watch everyone eat pizza while I had Soup. I held strong though!
  18. So I'm just finishing day 2 of my 8 day pre-op liquid diet. My surgeon didn't give me a specific meal plan, just examples of what I could eat, and what I should not eat. Basically the "do not eat" column lists things like anything chewable, no caffeine, no carbonated beverages, etc...The okay column he does list things like sugar free jello/pudding, skim milk, 0% MF Yogurt, broth based Soups, cream based soups (strained), and shakes such as Boost/Ensure high Protein, instant Breakfast shakes and such (which are higher in carbs then say a premiere protein shake). The only specifics are that I am to have 800-1200 calories a day, and 60-80g of protein, but said nothing regarding carbs. I'm hitting my calorie and protein goals no problem coming in between 1000-1150 calories each day, and right around 80-85g of protein per day, but my carbs are around 150. I've seen lots of posts here that you should be way lower then that to help the liver prepare for surgery. My issue is that I am a type II diabetic and when I try to reduce my carbs further then this I have periods where I become hypoglycemic (which has never happened to me in my 10 years of being diabetic...I'm always in the high range). I guess I'm just confused on how to proceed as I only have 6 days left of my liquid diet before surgery and I'm thinking that keeping my carb count this high isn't helping things. I was told during my pre-op assessment to not take my diabetic meds the day of my surgery so my blood sugar doesn't get too low. Maybe I need to talk to my family physician and see about coming off some more meds so I can lower my daily carbs count without crashing...*confused*
  19. I am just finishing day 3 today. Day 2 I had a crazy headache that just wouldn't go away, and today I still have the hunger but it doesn't seem to bother me nearly as much as the first two days. No headache today, but I did feel like everything tasted terrible except for my tomato Soup I had for lunch. I was actually under 800 calories for the day after supper, so I ended up having a sugar free pudding and unsweetened apple sauce for a snack tonight. I've been holding strong with not eating solid foods as I want to be prepared 100% for my surgery on Monday!
  20. Just wanted to follow up to my OP. I talked with my surgeons office today, who in turn spoke with my nut and they both followed up with me. According to them I am on track and should be between 800-1200 calories, 60-80g Protein, and my nut says I am good with the 150g of carbs. I questioned her regarding glycogen in the liver and it not shrinking enough prior to surgery, but she was telling me with the reduced caloric intake and already reduced carbs, I should be fine. Talked to family physician and they had me reduce some of my diabetes oral meds already!

    Pre-Op Diets

Surgery date is December 9th also. 8 days of liquids before surgery date. 7 days are full fluids (broths, strained cream soups, sugar free popsicles, 0% MF Yogurt, Shakes, blended cottage cheese, sugar free/fat free jello/pudding, skim milk, etc...) and then 1 day of clear fluids before surgery date. No chew able foods, caffeine, or carbonated beverages. Spent the last week getting myself off my caffeine addiction before moving on to the liquid diet!
