  1. Funny how things change! I hated the crystal light in the hospital but now I drink it all the time! I too have had an increased sense of smell! I am not sure how great that will be since I am an asst director at a daycare!

That sense of smell in a daycare could be trouble alright!

  2. My tastes have definitely changed. For example, the flavored Protein Shakes I had before surgery, I can't stomach now. They're way too sweet. Syrupy sweet. Also, Water doesn't taste right. My NUT said I could add a little bit of crystal light to the water or a small piece of fruit to improve the flavor of water. That worked. My wife tried it and said it's too watered down for her. But it tastes best to me. I'm including a list of what tastes good to me now, so far. I've tried many things pureed, and several things I used to like are now revolting. They aren't on the list below. If you want to know the things I can't stand now, let me know. So here's the good stuff pureed, so far: Apple sauce, Cottage cheese, String cheese, Bacon, Vegetable/tomato juice, Water, with a tiny bit of crystal light or a tiny piece of fruit, Non-fat yogurts, unflavored Protein shakes, Scrambled eggs, and Mashed potatoes from box. What are your favorites so far?

  3. Hopingnomeds I am going to buy filleted flounder from a seafood market so hopefully no bones! Also later I can't wait to have me some shrimp boiled of course and crab! I think I also discovered that my pouch doesn't like refried beans! I just ate the middle out of a soft taco and it didn't make my stomach react the way Beans did!

Sounds yummy! Let us know how it goes. I'd like to try some baked fish too.

  4. Hi everyone! I'm scheduled for surgery on the 31st of December (Happy New Year to me!) -- so I guess I will be the last person in the December group. I am feeling much more afraid now as the time is coming closer -- but reading all your posts makes this seem a lot less scary. My question is: What is one thing you wish you had known about the day of surgery and recovery?

Gas pain is WAY WORSE than they described. Walk as often and as long as you can. Drink as much Water as you can. Lay on your pain side cause gas rises. And use those IV pain meds! They were my best friend!

  5. Hopingnomeds I have not even gotten to soft foods yet! Jan 2 is when I am suppose to go to soft foods two weeks on that and on to reg foods! I am very cautios because I don't want to be sick but I think I will try a scrambled egg on Monday and see how it goes! Have you had egg yet?

Yes, I've had scrambled eggs, but pureed only so far. I have to be very careful about how much I take in at once. I'm limited to about a teaspoon at a time, and a 1/4 cup at a time. My dietitian recommended cottage cheese with salsa pureed. Have you tried that?

  6. I am like mrs Jekyll And mrs Hyde to put it mildly! There are just times I am sooo hormonal that the food frustrates me! I am suppose to start soft foods jan 2! What is y'all's opinion of me doing it two days early?

My dietitian told me today to let my pouch "tell" me when to progress through the stages. She said the dates she originally gave me were what most patients progress thru the stages. She added that dry meats will be the last things tolerated. At 17 days from surgery, right now I can only tolerate liquids, pureed foods, and some soft foods. I hope that helps.

  7. Hi I'm two weeks post-op. Having a hard time eating meat, and swallowing pills I get pain especially after I swallow a pill. It hurts a lot. Any suggestions? Is this normal?

I only had a drain tube which was taken out the day I was released from the hospital. The incision the tube was in hurt the worst of all five incisions. But thankfully most of my incision pain is gone. Not all, just most. Have you called your doctor or on call nurse?

  8. Wow I wished I could have soft food! I am on oureed food til jan 2 and it's very hard to find something I like! I am having problems sleeping anyone else? I find myself with about 3 to 4 pillows under my head!

It's bitter medicine, but I bite into two generic benadryl gel-caps at bedtime. I suck out the benadryl and spit out the gel-caps. That helps me nod off. I'm also on pureed foods now until the 15th. I called the bariatric nurse and she said it's still most important to get in the liquids each day. More important than getting the "meals", pureed or otherwise. I also try to get the Protein Shakes in too. I hope that's helpful to those who need it. I found out my nausea and cold sweats were my body's version of dumping syndrome. I'm still getting used to how much to sip at once. Anyway, I hope for a wonderful family filled Christmas to all! Merry Christmas!

  9. Ok. So I had my surgery on 12/20. I just got released to come home today. Hospital stay was way longer than expected, but I have an over cautious surgeon. I had my gallbladder removed. And the surgery took over two hours longer than expected. Surgeon said it was the biggest fall bladder he had ever seen. That was an awkward thing to learn. My surgeon said he was shocked that it hasn't caused me problems. Wierd! The most awful pain was the second day. Another trippy part for me was having this tube removed from me this morning that was inside my body. When she pulled it out, it felt like a snake was in my body. Such a yucky feeling. I still have a tube that stays in me for six weeks. I hope it doesn't feel that way when they remove that one.

I'm glad your through the surgery. I hope things go better for your healing and recovery!

  10. I've been feeling a little nauseous, with cold sweats most days. I think it has to do with taking too big of sips. I'm still on full liquids. I get to go to pureed foods tomorrow. I know I'm not dehydrated. I'm drinking four half-liter Water bottles per day, and my urine's clear or light yellow. I still get dizzy now and then. But not as much since they have me on half my BP meds now. Does anyone else feel nauseous with cold sweats most days?

  11. I am just one day out from my surgery. Yesterday was rough...today was better physically but I did have some tears. I'm looking froward starting my journey!

Greenize is right. It will get better. It's hard too see the future when you're in pain. But it will get better. Make sure you do what your medical staff say. And take advantage of those pain meds.

  12. Retracting my liver? ????? I also had a drain that was causing pain on that side but the took it out the day before I came home!

Same here. I had a drain too that they took out the day I was released. But that drain was on my right side. Red Stacey's right about one of the incisions having that liver retracter. It's usually one of the uppermost incisions. You might wanna watch one of the YouTube videos on a live RNY. I couldn't watch before my surgery. But it was most enlightening after.

  13. No meds my appt went well! All they did was ask me how I was doing and he didn't even look at incisions! I asked again about metformin and dr Primomo asked what was the highest sugar and I told him! I now need to quit seeing my endocrinologist! I am excited about that so why am I feeling guilty like I have done something wrong ? Maybe I am just weird! Lol

Excellent! Congratulations! I hope I can say the same soon. Maybe your guilt has to do with all the times you heard your medical concerns were going to be with you for the rest of your life. Maybe those feelings have to do with the hormones released by the ketones we're using for fuel right now. Anyway, you've reason to really celebrate!
