  1. I've had my surgery date for about 3 weeks now, December 10th. My doctors office submitted paperwork to my insurance this week on Monday and I called the next day and was approved! So easy.... I feel so glad that it went through so smooth like that with no pre-reqs.

I go to the hospital on the 11th to have all the testing I guess. Pre op appt is two weeks before surgery. Wonder what is in store for me on pre-op diet. Last time for the lap band I had to do one month all liquids. I did really good though so hopefully this will be a piece of cake.

I hope all goes well for you too. If you don't mind, why the change from lap band to RNY?

  2. I'm with you on the forever thing. I'm four days out and still trying to get my mind right. The pain of the surgery surprised me. I've had back surgery' date=' but this was in a totally different league. I remember them saying in class that there would be a slight discomfort. SLIGHT? Today is better than yesterday, so I know this too shall pass. I keep staring at the 1 oz cups wondering if I can squeeze 5 oz of Water into it. :)[/quote']

A co-worker who's about three years out from his RNY said the worst pain was from right after surgery to a few days later from trying to get the co2 gas out of his torso, that they used to inflate the area they did the surgery. He said his best advice was to get up and walk immediately and as often as possible to help the co2 dissipate.

  3. I've been in the December Surgery thread of the Pre-Surgery Forum. But I wanted to know from the men here if any of you, who've had the surgery, have had buyer's remorse. My surgeon's dietitian told me everyone has it, but they mostly get over it by the time they're eating soft foods. The idea of doing this to my internal organs FREAKS ME OUT!

  4. Thanks SoccerMomma73 and RDCLambert! To RDCLambert, I believe you've done everything you can do for now. I don't know your husband or any other support people you have in your life. But your comments about them, especially your husband, indicate you DO have their support. And as you said, if you can handle a C-section, which I, as a guy, can only be in awe of, you can handle the RNY! ;-)

  5. I'm sorry to hear about your elevated A1C, RDCLambert. Maybe the reason one says it's diabetes and the other says not 100%, is because it's caught early enough that the RNY will nip it in the bud. In this part of the country they say elevated A1C could be type 2 diabetes or it could mean "pre-diabetes". Either way, hopefully, our RNY's WILL cure this.

  6. Thanks Infinity! My fears are probably typical. But wanting to avoid such a drastic and damaging surgery, is at the top. I worry that within my lifetime a better medical/genetic approach will become as common as bariatric surgery. But on the other hand, after RNY all my parts will still be with me, not like vertical sleeve. I look forward to feeling full on a lot less, a lot sooner. My surgeon refers to our normal stomachs as grocery bags. I guess they are in that it takes a lot to fill them. My prep for surgery is mostly trying to maintain that 5% weight loss, while trying to implement the behavior changes like slowing down my eating, reducing portions, regular meals, and Fluid restrictions around meals. Also getting my head around this being medically essential for me. Believe me, if there was another, less drastic way, I'd do it instead. How about you?

  7. Hello everyone! I've been mostly in The Man Room forum on this and the Vertical Sleeve Talk support groups. My surgeon said I'd be good for the sleeve. Then my insurance overruled him, so now I'm trying to look forward to an RNY. I've read you lose more with the RNY. So there's that. I saw some other guys posting here, and since my surgery date is in December, I thought I'd join in the thread. I'm probably like other guys in that my wife started looking at bariatric surgery for herself last year. But she changed her mind and looked back into WW instead. Then on a whim, I asked my PCP about it for myself and he immediately jumped on it saying it was medically necessary for me, due to my having all the co-morbidities, even though my BMI is less than 40. A week later I was accepted into the program. That was Aug 1st. I've completed all the pre-lims: met with NUTs (dietitian/nutritionist), one for insurance and one for surgeon, psych, surgeon, and case managers for insurance and surgeon. My date for surgery is now 12/31/13. I don't know why they're waiting until the end of the year. I think it's due to the holiday schedules of the surgeons. I've read your posts—your wanting it done already, and then wanting it postponed FOREVER! I can relate. I've had those mixed feelings as well. I asked my surgeon's dietitian how many have had buyers remorse after surgery. And she said “ALL OF THEM!” She added that they usually get over it before they're eating soft foods. I'm hoping for success and no more meds for those co-morbidities. Hopefully they'll be gone like my PCP and surgeon seem to think. Height 6' 1”, HW 290, CW 270, GW 190. Also, I'm at Spokane WA, (and used to PEBB (insurance contractor) as a state employee. Hello to u-no-it!)

  8. Thanks pdxman! What you wrote helps!

I hope to get off all three daily meds and cpap.

I know I can handle the diet changes and exercise. I've been doing that almost all my life. I've also been taking multi's and Calcium, and other supps most of my life. I've been on all kinds of diets including Protein powders and fasting. So I'm not concerned about those changes.

I'm concerned that since I've been taking most of my meds for most of my adult life I may not be able to drop them completely.

    Does anyone have similar concerns?

  9. I'm a 56 year old male, with all the co-morbidities except diabetes, (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, atrial fibrillation, sleep apnea, arthritis in knees and hips, ruptured disc in lower back, and had a TIA about a year ago). All are being treated. I'm hoping for no meds and no CPAP, eventually. I asked my primary about bariatric surgery and he referred me immediately. I was approved by insurance a week later. I have 80 - 100 pounds to lose. My surgeon and his case manager say I'll likely have surgery before Thanksgiving 2013. My surgeon says his staff will be surprised when they see me on the table because my fat is evenly distributed. I was a body builder, (no steroids), and have lifted since I was 15 years old, and done cardio since before that. Is there anyone else out there who has a similar experience?
