1. I had to share. Oscar Mayer P3 Portable Protein Pack. It's a small serving of meat, cheese and nuts, packaged kind of like a Lunchable. Perfect size, 13 grams of protein. FYI - Target's cartwheel app has a coupon for 50% off, combined with a manufacturers coupon that's stuck on the package makes these little treats about $.40/each! https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cartwheel-by-target/id659563061?mt=8

  2. Here's how I look at it. I do believe the ideal diet is one that is primarily vegan, organic, unprocessed, with no refined sugar, etc. However, seeing that most of us here are in the "morbidly obese" category preop, I think that the health issues related to our weight override all else. For me, once I'm at my healthy goal weight, then I can focus on "cleaner" eating. Drinking Crystal Light and eating beef Jerky is not the path to optimal health, but until my excess weight is gone, I'll make losing that weight my priority.

On the other hand, you CAN eat a vegan diet postop. It takes more work and creativity than what our WLS doctors' diets, yes. You may find resistance from your surgeon. However, it isn't impossible. If it's important to you right now in your life to make that change, don't let anyone tell you differently.

  3. My light bulb moment happened this week. I had my surgery on November 22 and have done pretty well. I have stayed the course and have not swayed from my list of acceptable Protein options prior to this mini vacation. This week I went to San Francisco to care for my aged father. When I arrived in SF I went to the market immediately and bought my Dannon light and fit yogurt, cottage cheese, Light Baby Bel cheese and turkey slices before I even went to my Dad's. I wanted to make sure I continue to make good choices when it came to food. Seven days later....... I am home and food wasn't an issue. For the first time in decades I took control of my eating habits when visiting the family in San Francisco. I said NO to a cannoli, NO to a Joe's hamburger, NO to a Tostada, NO to a crepe, etc.......my response was, "Can I meet you afterwards?" I always carried a Baby Bel Cheese in my purse and always felt satisfied. I came home 4 pounds lighter and the feeling........I GOT THIS!

That's AWESOME. That city can be so DANGEROUS with amazing, so-bad, diet-busting food! My next visit will involve a trip to Swan's Oyster Depot for deliciously guilt free crab legs :-)

  4. Any suggestions for vegan 3weeks out of surgery? I seem to not tolerate dairy, or meat prodycts well.

I was vegan for a long time, and I'm a chef. I'd guess trial and error for vegan foods; trying to find what works. There a pea Protein Shake that you can buy single packs of at health food stores. It tastes great to me. Tofu (grilled, in smoothies, chopped into vegetable stock), unsweetened Peanut Butter (ooh! Maybe mixed with silken tofu to smooth it out, with stevia added?!), Beans, beans, beans. Soy milk "shakes" (add cocoa powder, vanilla, stevia, ice...). Field roast, if soft enough. Soy cheese (Trader Joe's makes an awesome soy American cheese). You can top tofurkey (or other meat sub) with a vegetable gravy. In a pan, melt earth balance spread with an equal amount of flour, cook on medium high for a minute or two, add vegetable stock and bring to a boil until it thickens. Season with salt and pepper. OK, I'll stop now!

  5. I am 19 days post op and still on the full liquid phase. My doctor does not want me to start the puree phase until 4 weeks. This is killing me. I am so nauseated still and trying to force down any Protein Shake, broth, even Water is a huge production. I feel I am slipping into the dehydrated side, something I have so desperately tried to stay away from thus far. I was on the nausea patch but was taken off of it 3 days ago. At my post op appointment, due to side effetcts it was causing me. I was also just put on protonix for acid/ ulcers 3 days ago with high hopes of it helping my nausea. It hasn't. I am popping zofran melt tabs every 8 hours and the dreaded phenergan suppositories with out much relief either. Don't know how much more of this I can take. I am starting to be a real burden on my family. My poor husband took his vacation to take care of me after surgery and is now back to work. We have a 4 and 2 yr old and I feel like I just left the hospital. I know there is light at the end of the tunnel but at this point I regret not being able to loose the weight on my own and hate what I am putting my family through and how I feel. So frustrated and sick to my stomach. I could cry, in fact, I am.

I'm SO sympathetic to what you're going through. I had my surgery on 12/17, and still am exhausted. My poor husband asked me today "when will I get my wife back?" I threw up from drinking too much water in one sitting twice in the past few days, and it was heartbreaking having my 8 year old daughter (I have three kids) hovering over me, rubbing my back, and asking if I was going to be ok. I just keep telling them (and myself!) it will get better and once I'm better, I'll be better than ever. PM me if you feel like talking more.

  6. I must say the BEST thing I've eaten on puree stage is WENDYS CHILLI pureed in the blender. OMG YES and only $1.60 with tax. (My inner fat girl is saying thank you god for something so good)

My inner fat girl keeps asking me "Why on earth do you just keep on walking past the candy isle every time we go to the grocery store? Not to mention the bread isle! Are you trying to get rid of me!?!?!?"

    Yes, chubs. I am. ;-)

    Add me to 12/17!

  8. Funny story: I did C25K two years ago, at 240 pounds. I loved it! Running is in my blood. However, once I finished the program, I realized that - since I was so overweight and s-l-o-w - it wasn't so much "couch to 5K" as it was "couch to 3K"!!! I ran a 13-14 minute mile. Hey, I did it though! If I recall correctly, the program is based on a 10 minute mile. Maybe once I'm down to goal weight, that'll be more realistic ;-)

If you've never thought you'd be able to, or even have a desire, to run, give it a try! Especially given that, as we lose weight, our bodies can handle the stress on the hips and knees better than before surgery. For me, yoga+running is stress relief like nothing else.

  9.
Any fellow school teachers out there? I'm beginning to get nervous about going back to work since it's taking me so long to eat a meal and we only have 30 min. to eat lunch. Also worried about keeping up with Water intake since it's pretty much impossible to go to restroom with a room full of first graders?

I sub (I have a teaching license but there's no jobs available in my small town!) When was your surgery? I taught full time during pregnancy and I know how physically taxing our job can be when you're not at 100%! Have you considered taking more time off? I KNOW planning for a sub is tedious, and stressful. Look at it this way: you can write your sub plans, go in and get everything organized and ready (and pray for a good sub!), or you can go I'm to work, wear yourself out, and shortchange your kids, and your body. Maybe that one extra week will be all you need to get yourself completely ready. Just my two cents!

  10. So, I have spent some quality time on Pinterest and realized that I am so used to wearing oversized, hide my fat, schleppy clothes that I have absolutely NO idea what my style is going to be when I can wear clothes with style. It's so weird looking at all of those pictures of skinny ladies in skin tight clothes...I just keep thinking 'never gonna happen'.

It is hard to believe, isn't it. It is also entirely possible!
