  1. I love your username... I love to scuba dive too... just never get the chance! Wow, you are very very active! What you've outlined leads me to believe you may be needing a bit of a rest. I think your main concern is trying to build your run endourance, so you can run farther. You didn't say how frequently you run, so I'll just assume since you're on week 8, that you run every other day. If you're running more frequently than that, I'd suggest backing off a bit.

I'd suggest you alternate your cardio days (running) with strength training days and not do too much of both on the same days.

Your nutrition sounds great. Lots of balance. Just make sure you're getting enough Water before your run, and I like to have a bit of real Protein, not powder, before too.

Don't worry about your weight loss, you're doing all the right things, and are probably losing lots of fat. good luck!

I do love diving, i havent done a lot the past year but hope to change that this summer.

Thanks for the suggestions. I thought about the water yesterday while i was running. The other thing i thought about was that our weather last week went from temps below freezing to temps in the 60's literally overnight, with some pretty high humidity too.

I will give your suggestions a try, and alternate strenth training and running and not do too much. I'll also give the solid protein a try.

You girls are certainly an inspiration to keep going, i love reading this thread.

    hugs, Pat

  2. Hi!

I haven't posted to this thread before but have been reading here for a while. I've been doing the C25K and just finished wk 8. I was banded 2/16/09, was doing C24k before banding and after i went back a couple of weeks and have been building up. I've signed up to run a 5K on 5/16/09. Here's my problem -I'm running the time but no where near the distance and last week i really felt i hit a wall about half way thru the run and had to walk some of it.

So i'm wondering if i'm overtraining, not eating the right stuff before i run? I get up at 4:45, and have a cup of chia latte mix that i make. The mix has nonfat dry milk, Protein Powder, some Equal and spices. I heat it with 8 oz skim milk. I drink that and try to be at the park by 6:00 to start my run. After my run i come home and do a workout video, lately has been the biggest loser power sculpt. On the days i don't run, i walk between 2 & 3 miles and come home and do the biggest loser cardio max video. So i've been doing about an hour to an 1.5 hours of exercise a day. Sundays is a rest day, tho as a family we try to something together, geocaching, a walk or something, but nothing real intense.

Do i need to eat something more before i work out? If so, Protein or healthy carb (oatmeal?)? Am i over training?

My weight loss has kind of stalled at right around the 200 mark. I'm scheduled for a fill this Wednesday, my 2nd. I'm averaging between 65 and 80 gms of protein a day, and between 1000 & 1200 calories. I eat healthy carbs, fruits and veggies. My whole grains consist of steel cut oatmeal for Breakfast and maybe whole grain crackers for lunch. No potatoes, rice, Pasta or bread.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Pat

  3. I had my surgery in Erie at Hamot with Dr. Ali on 1/7/09. My weight on DOS was 234. Today I weigh 197. I had a very good experience and am ecstatic to be below 200 for the first time since 1984. I have pretty much stuck by the rules/guidelines given to me pre op. The only exception was when I started regular foods I had a painful episode and thought a small amt of Water would help. It did not. I have only recently gotten into exercising on a regular basis as we all know what the Erie weather can be like. I am very pleased and can't wait for warmer weather.

Congratulations on being under 200! You are doing great! I had my surgery with Dr. Ali on 2/16/09. I was 220 on DOS and today am 208, i can't wait to get below 200! I had my first fill this past Tuesday, a small one of 1 cc. I've been exercising inside, using Wii fit and only last week, getting outside to walk/run. I'm happy with my decision and pleased with my progress.

Sounds like you are on the right track. I definitely how our lovely weather can be. I swim at indoor pool for my exercise. Can't do much else due to a tendon problem in my foot. Isn't Dr. Ali wonderful? I am trying to get some sort of support group going in the Meadville area so that we don't have to do that drive to Erie. I have a tough time finding someone to watch the kiddos as well.

adoptmom, I'm thinking of starting a yahoo group for those of us who had surgery at Hamot. Would you be interested? It would be a simpler form of this, but mostly for those of us who used Hamot.

Hope you both have a pleasant day! Lets stay in touch.

    Pat

  4. How is everyone doing today?

I am doing pretty good. I feel really tired however. I am having protien shake problems. I find it hard to drink so many shakes! My tummy gets way too full. So far I am only averaging 15 oz of Protein a day.

(I know, that is way to low!)

I just don't know how to get it all in!

    Hugs & Healing to everyone!!

It is hard to get all the Protein in when you are not hungry. I use Isopure or a protein bullet as the cold Water in my Jello and add an envelope of knox Gelatin to it also. It can add up to 17 gms of protein for 1/2 cup of Jello. And it doesn't make it taste any different. Feeling really tired can be a sign of dehydration so make sure you're getting enough fluids too!

My nutritionist also suggested using double strenth milk (1/3 cup of dry nonfat milk added to 1 c. skim milk) to boost my protein. I add it to my Soups and my carnation instant Breakfast, in the blue box (the liquid supplement my surgeon recommends). I was using the double strength milk in my pudding before surgery too, and can't wait till next week when i can have pudding again.

    hey shelly,

i'm impressed that you're getting so much protein in so soon. i'm still on Clear liquids, and there's only so much broth and protein Water i can have. i get really tired in the afternoons but i hope that will change once i start having Soups, Protein shakes and yogurt in the next couple of days. the first few days were fairly tolerable... not too much shoulder pain or gas. but today, i feel so gassy and my stomach has gotten really bloated. thankfully i still have little shoulder pain! the gas and bloating makes me feel like i'm pregnant. walking and gas x aren't helping like they used to. i hope this will pass soon!!!

Hope you're feeling better now! The gas is the worst of it, in my opinion! I had lots of gas on Sat, of course the day i had an event to attend!

Babe~ my worst days gas-wise were day 3 & 4. The gas-x never really helped me much. Walking did help a bit, but once I laid down, all the gas seemed to build up again. I started putting a heating pad on my belly, and that seemed to help a bit.

Friday I went w/ my Mom to GNC, to find different protiens I could swallow. I found Isopure, which comes in a glass bottle and one serving equals 40g of protein. It tastes almost like gatorade, and comes in several flavors: punch, pineapple-orange and grape. I can get them down in about an hour, with no gagging!

I also found ProSlam27. It is about 3oz of liquid and comes in this silly little plastic bullet-shaped container. It has 27g of protein in those 3oz of liquid!! I found peach and fruit punch. I poured the peach into a glass of iced tea and it tasted just like a Snapple!! YUMMY! I couldn't believe I was ENJOYING a protein drink!! :tt2:

So, between the two, I can get in around 70g of protein each day, not including my "food." Awesome!

    Hope this helps!

    HUGS ALL!

I love the isopure and the proslam's! I mix it with jello, or crystal light, it sure does boost the protein!

Good afternoon ladies! I just wanted to see how everyone is feeling. I was feeling a lot better until today. My delayed time of the month decided to visit me. I don't know what it is about this time but I'm in so much pain. I always have really bad cramps but this time is almost unbearable. I'm supposed to return to work tomorrow but I already told my hubby if it doesn't get better I'm not going. I hope everyone else is doing better.

    Hope you're feeling better!

So I didn't think this whole past week I got in enough protein either. I was very fatigued. Today I started my mushies *YAY* and I feel so much better already. I orderd unjury protein powder off the internet after reading some posts on the best tasting or no-taste protein powder and it seems this one is the best. Once it comes in I will tell yall how it tastes. I am acutally alot less sore today but I want to know when I will be able to sleep on my sides (at least). I am so sick of sleeping on my back and it hurts :wink2:

i found i can sleep on my right side with a pillow tucked under and against my incisions. I was so tired of sleeping on my back!

MRSM~ I am totally with ya!! Sleeping on my left side is my favorite way to sleep. Of course, that is the side where the deep muscle incision is, so there is no way in HECK I can lay on that side! I can sleep on my right side for about an hour, then the left side starts to feel like it is falling out the right side! So, I lay on my back, which aches after a few hours. And my backside goes numb and AAARGH! Here's to sleeping soundly on our sides SOON!!

    HUGS,

I hear ya, try supporting your tummy with a pillow or an extra blanket to see if it helps.

I'm feeling pretty good. Still sore, especially around the port site, which i expected. I went back to work this week and i'm tired at the end of the day, but not unbearably so.

Hope everyone has a pleasant day.

    hugs, Pat

  5. i was banded on 2/16

    started 2 week pro-op at 223

    surgery was 216

    today 208

    Congratulations! Great loss!

My doc told me I was doing awesome and needed to get with my primary doc because he thinks I may be able to go off my blood pressure meds!!

The best news of all, of course, is that since the day of surgery, I have lost.....wait for it.....wait for it.............

    EIGHTEEN POUNDS!! :tt2:

Wow! Already off meds, that is terrific! Awesome loss!

..drum roll please..... 4.5 lbs bringing my total loss from the pre-op diet to 13.5lbs. I:thumbup:

    Great job! Great loss!

Now for my stats - I started pre-op at 228.2, at surgery weighed 220.4 and for my first band weigh-in was at 216.6. So that gives me a total of 11.6 in 2 weeks! I don't see my surgeon for another 3 weeks. I see my PCP next tuesday and i know he will be pleasantly surprised - cause i will be close to a 20 lb loss in about 6 weeks

WE are on our way! Congratulations everyone!

    hugs, Pat

  6. Congratulations to everyone! Sounds like everyone made it thru with flying colors! My surgery was scheduled for 7:20 am, i ran a few minutes late getting in there as they couldn't get an iv site started. But once that got in, i was on my way, and it was all good.

I've had little pain, in my shoulder, i found a heating pad helps alleviate that. I'm sore on my incisions but nothing too bad.

Yesterday was a blah day, feeling tired and sore, had a hard time drinking much of anything. Today I'm feeling much more like myself. Finding it much easier to drink.

We are part of a very elite group now, congrats everyone!

  7. Hi all!

It's been a while since i've written, but i've been here reading and reading. I got a call this afternoon saying that my surgery has been scheduled for 2/16! I start the pre-surgery liquid diet the 9th. I see the surgeon on the 10th. After all these months of waiting, it's happening very, very fast!

I wanted to share with you, cause you will understand the emotions i'm feeling right now! I'm not even sure i can begin to describe it!

    Thanks for listening! Hugs, Pat

  8. Happy Belated Thanksgiving Everyone!

Sounds as if everyone had a great day! With my family, a holiday is never just one day but a multiple, this time a three day feast! I did ok, wt up 2 lbs yesterday and already 1 of those is gone, so thinking some was just Water.

I had a nsv too. I had cleaned out my closet and taken the clothes that were too large for me. I had intended to give them to my mother and sister who have always been about the same size as me. I was pleasantly surprised to find that most were too small for them and fit my neice (22). I'm glad someone can use them regardless. And they are out of my closet never to return!

Good luck So and Joanne on your upcoming surgeries!

Hope everyone has a great day!

    Hugs, Pat

  9. Hi Pat !!!

Don't listen to that 50% to 60% those are just #'s - there are alot of pple here who have lost 100% of their excess weight - I made it my goal to loss it all... And with the help of my band for the 1st time in my life I have gotten to goal... You can do it..

Your doc sounds alot like mine - except they called all the pple I had to see and then those pple called me to set up appointments.

I got them all done in 6 weeks - and I had tons -sleep' date=' heart, lungs, colon, pap, mamo, dietican, shrink, blood work 14 vials, xrays..

January will be here before you know it...

Glad to see things are progressing well for you - and oh my that trip !!! Snow 6 hours... glad you and daughter were together - that would be scary if you were all alone...

    [/quote']

Thanks for the inspiration Janet. That was the first thing that my daughter and i said when we left the office, we are going to show him, we can do it and lose 100% of our weight...lol. I saw my PCP for my last supervised visit today and we talked about my surgery, he seemed surprised when I told him that i wanted to lose 100#. I'm his first lapband patient, well, my daughter and I, so he is really clueless...lol. The nurses always ask so many questions, i'm really glad i've got the experience of this board and my research to answer them.

    Hi Pat

I see you are in PA - so am I but a little North of Pittsburgh. Where are you driving to have your surgery? Are you by any chance coming to Pittsburgh for your surgery?

    Sandi

Hi Sandi, I live about 3.5 hours north of pittsburgh, so we are going to Erie for our surgery, it's not much closer 3 hours on a good day. Not a lot of difference in time, but i am more familiar with Erie than Pittsburgh. It's nice to meet another bandster from Pa. Which hospital are you using?

    Happy birthday Phyll!

    Welcome May!

    Hugs, Pat

  10. Long,

Congratulations on your loss! Have a wonderful and safe trip, too!

Unfortunately, St. Marys is on the opposite side of the state from Philly. We are located in the middle of no where! St. Marys is about 45 minutes north of DuBois which is on I-80. We are between Pittsburgh (3.5 hours away)and Erie (3 hours away). I'm going to have my surgery in Erie. I'm glad my daughter is doing this with me, we have our own little support group. The only other person in our house is my son and he pretty much does his own thing.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

    Pat

  11. Good Morning Everyone!

Welcome to those of you who are new! Well wishes to those of you and yours who are facing health issues! Congratulations to those who are losing, losing, losing!

Here's a little update. My daughter and I had our consult with the surgeon last Thursday. We of course had snow to contend with on the way, got lost and were late. We called and they waited for us, thankfully.

Saw the nurse, weight, height, measurements, pictures. Then we joined 2 other women, and as a group watched a video from the insurance guy, then a video from the surgeon. The surgeon came in and talked to us and answered questions. Then we were examined indivually by the surgeon. I have to have a stress test in addition to the usual bloodwork, ekg, chest xray and the swallow thing. My daughter has to have a few more tests including a sleep test. Both also have to meet with the nutrionalist and make a psych visit. The office makes all the appointments (except for the psych)nand sends you the info, so we are waiting for our packets. We asked that they piggyback as much as possible and make our appointments for the same day as it is a 3 hour trip.

The surgeon questioned whether we continue with our follow up care as we are so far. I tried to assure him that i really want this and will do what i have too.

He also told me that i can only expect to lose 50 to 60 lbs with the band. I of course want to lose more but as i'm doing this to prevent health problems, i'll do what it takes.

The ride home was absolutely horrendous, it took us over 6 hours! It was snowing so hard, you couldn't see to drive at times. Tractor trailers were stuck on the hills, had to Detour once. We were stopped, stuck on a hill with hundreds of other cars at one point for almost an hour. We stopped once for gas and a couple of times to clean the ice off the headlights and wipers. We were afraid to stop and eat, so ate some Protein Bars i had in my purse. I have to admit both of us were questioning our decision to have this surgery at one point during the drive home.

So now we are waiting for our packets, continuing the medically supervised and waiting again. Reading here everyday to get as much info and prepare as much as possible.

I'm hoping to have surgery sometime in Jan. I can't wait!
