  1. I had terrible nausea. I always do with anesthesia and narcotics. I was better after the first 24 and it was gone after 48. It did slow me down walking those first 2 days. I definitely empathize! Hang in there. It gets better.

Can you tell me what pain meds you are on? Everything I take makes me want to throw up. I am still in the hospital. I finally told the nurse, "let's try Tylenol". My nausea is that bad.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

  2. For those of you who haven't had surgery yet. I have discovered two things I cannot live without here at the hospital: Biotene moisturizing mouth spray and a robe so my butt goes not hang out when I walk. The mouth spray sounds weird, but it is incredible. The anti-nausea patch really dries you out. This helps a ton... Especially when all you can have is ice chips! ....good luck!

  3. That's great metro chic congrats, I just got approved last week and I am awaiting to meet with the surgeon one more time before I get my surgery date . I'm glad your doing good so would you suggest the patch ?

Yes still I'm hospital bed. And most definitely would recommend the patch ("scopolamine"). The patch has kept all nausea at bay. In fact he sent me home with some more.

Super sleepy thou. I hope to write more as I am able.

    ;)

  4. I was sleeved yesterday and am writing this from my hospital bed.

I woke up from surgery absolutely writhing in pain and so nauseous. Everyone told me it would be awful. It was.

However the behind the ears nausea patch and delaudid kicked in about 2 hours later. Since then zero nausea and low pain (1-2 on the pain scale) has been max. Oh, and the fact that I've only had ice chips and it hasn't bothered me at all is mind blowing! I should have been starving by now. You read in all the forums about lack of hunger, but feeling it for yourself is unreal.

In short, this has been way easier than I ever thought possible. The leak test is coming up qickly. So maybe I am sitting here leaking inside and not at all in good shape. Lol. But if that leak testing determines I am A-okay, I am declaring knee surgery to be a TON worse than VSG!!!

Fingers crossed that the leak test results are good.

    Game on!

  5. I also started in August and am expected to get sleeved in late Feb/March. However I am not excited. I am not scared of the surgery so much -- rather wondering if I will beat myself up post-surgery because I didn't do it the old fashioned way. My husband and I have been pretty successful in pre op weight loss. (He's contemplating surgery too.) I would like to think that I can do it without surgery. However history has shown that regain is imminent.

I am 5'7" and weigh about 235. I don't have a ton to lose, but am no where near healthy either.

Anyone else struggling with these feelings?

  6. My husband (and his family) have gout really badly. I can tell you if he touches red sauce, beef, grapefruit or alcohol he is in serious pain. I also know that his dad has a prescription from his doctor that seems to keep the gout at bay.

    Maybe that will help you?

SoccerMamma73 is right about gout though... Water, water... and then more Water is the best way to feel better fast. I hope you feel better soon!

  7. I really wish insurance companies would do away with the 6-12 diets. It makes no sense, many if us are able to lose the weight. Keeping it off is a whole different story. They make you wait so much.

At first, I had the same opinion as you. I was really bothered by the idea that I had to wait six months. However I have become quite grateful to experience getting mentally prepared for this huge life change. The mental hunger, being asked to go out for the occasional beer, not planning meals in advance and totally eating the wrong stuff -- and too much of it... all of these are going to be things I'll be faced with as it gets easier to eat later on post sleeve. I just really feel like this is giving me a chance to screw up and self-correct while I still can. I am really glad they asked me to go through this "trial". In the scheme of things, I feel like six months isn't too terribly long. (I get sleeved in Jan/Feb of next year.)

    Just my two cents!

  8. Stupid question from someone who's still pre-op. I've heard all these amazing things about hunger elimination due to absence of ghrelin in your stomach. How is hunger possible early post-op? I have heard it comes back at like month 6 or 9, but I didn't think this was something that was even *possible* until much later...?

(Sorry if this is a dumb question...!)

  9. 1. Improved mobility - which was my # 1 goal with wls 2. I am off blood pressure med, Water pills, and anti-depressants now

Good for you!!! I couldn't agree with you more about #1 reason being mobility. We get one chance at this thing called life. I want to be able to take it by storm, hiking, running and smiling the whole way through! (Just need my knees to cooperate...lol)

    Congratulations again!!!!

  10. Takes longer to heal, decreased oxygenation for increased respiratory risk from surgery including pneumonia, increased risk of ulcers and GI bleed.

Thank you. I'm not a smoker personally. But someone I know considering this surgery is. Was just wondering what the specifics are.

    Thank you!

  11. What is your heart beat while working out? I know that during interval training, I can easily get to 180+bpm. One of my friends told me this was abnormally high and I should never exceed 170. Is she right?

I am working hard at 180+. I don't feel like I am going to pass out and die, but I do feel like i am working hard. Revving up my heart rate and working out hard is the one thing that makes the endorphins kick in and makes me feel great.

Is this at all normal? Anyone have any advice from their doctors or exercise physiologists? ...Thank you!

  12. I am honestly afraid to go see what I am missing.

You should go read it. It is seriously hilarious.

On a more serious note, it's a fabulous reminder of why its important to be compassionate and a good listener --- and the mayhem that ensues when we dont do those things. Its also a good reminder if why the caps lock key might be a good thing to avoid when communicating online. Lol.

  13. I just read the post and was HOWLING! I was literally laughing so hard I was crying. A recap of my favorite quotes:

"it just looks like NaNa got jumped on like a starved man on a Christmas ham"

"that tops the gal who wanted sympathy for eating tacos hours after her surgery."

"Bless your heart, I know you mean well, I don't know what you are talking about regarding your medical degree..I have a degree in computer science...Now please don't embarrass yourself with all of your so called lap band knowledge and long history in the medical field in Nursing..." (While giving medical advice to a *nurse*!)

"What the hell? I hope I'm not the "taco girl"..!"

"Ok just got my popcorn!! What I miss?"

    -------

I am stuck in bed about 22 hours a day (for four weeks) due to a non sleeved surgery. Thanks for the best laugh I have had in weeks. That is the most effed up thread I have ever read. Those poor poor people...

  14. I still have my old Victoria's Secret favorites from when I was a size 8 a decade ago (don't ask me why). I bring them out and look at them in awe. They look like they would fit a Barbie doll. Lol!

Absolutely unbelievable to think I was ever that small ---- or will be soon again.

I think framing a size of the current ginormous ugly panties next to one of those itself bitsy thongs might be all the reminder I need post-sleeve. Not sure what company would think. Lol.

  15. This thread is great. I never knew I had so much in common with so many.

I am 37 I work as an engineer in the Detroit area. I have been married for almost three years to the most incredible man ever. Previously, was married to a man who was abusive. (He was an absolute trainwreck.) It took me ten years to leave him. Very screwed up that it took me so long to realize he was never going to change. Life is great now though.

I have no kids. I desperately want a family. We've getten pregnant, but miscarried, and to be honest I think it's stupid for my body to try to carry a baby given my health/weight. It obviously doesn't want to. I am 5'7" and about 250. Time to do something about that.

I love the Detroit Tigers, if you could not tell. ;)

I am not girly. I love Legos. I love my nephew. I despise cooking. I love my job and probably work too much. I am *terrified* of small spaces , heights and spiders (the largest one I ever found in my home... In Michigan.. was 4 inches in diameter. Not a typo. Found two of them.)

Like some others being bigger never really bothered me...until I turned 35 and saw that I couldn't... hike, ride a coaster, canoe, run, do stairs, dance on the Wii, play laser tag, bike far, etc etc. I want my health back and I want a family.

Surgery will be in Jan or Feb. very excited for this journey to begin. Game on.

    Thanks for listening...!

    ;)

  16. Do any of you sew? Making skirts is *super* easy and can also be ridiculously cheap. Might be an option. Dresses are also cheap to make, but a bit more work.

Pants with a zipper and shirts (and suits) are pretty difficult and time consuming. Those are best to buy in my opinion. Pull on pants are super easy. ...just a thought! (Sorry for the random super late comment!)

  17. I will have to look up this toradol!!

Toradol is pretty weak pain killer comparatively. I just had knee surgery and they prescribed Toradol. Works slightly better than Ibuprofen 600's, but doesn't block pain nearly as well as Codeine. Toradol doesn't make me "loopy" though either which is nice. Problem for me is Codiene makes me super SUPER sick (nauseous). I used to get Darvocet prescribed to me (vs. Codeine) but the nurses said they don't make it anymore? Odd.
