  1. It's different for everyone depending on what your surgeon thinks best. I was cleared to start on the cross trainer the second day after surgery, but "just don't overdo it." By the time I went back for my 1 week checkup I was doing an hour at a time on the cross trainer at a moderate level. At the 1 week checkup, my doctor cleared me to start working out in the gym again at 1/2 my previous level of resistance, and 1/2 my previous number of reps, and I was to "work up slowly over the next month" to my previous levels. The main thing is you don't want to overdo. If you do, this will cause you problems instead of helping you. The best advice that I or anyone could ever give you is "Stick with the plan." And be patient. Don't compare your weight loss to anyone else, for therein lies certain disappointment.
  2. I have had severe nausea a couple of times after surgery. Now I just tell the anesthesiologist about it when I see him prior to surgery and they can give you some medication along with the anesthesia that will keep this from happening.
  3. I think you've gotten some really good answers here. It's mostly just like waking up from sleep, except that when you wake up from sleep you can become very aware of what's going on around you. When you wake up from the anesthesia, you can come to anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes, then drift off again, then come to again, etc. You may just wake up and be awake from then on, or you may drift off several times. Also the anesthesia has a little bit of a side effect for giving you some short term amnesia, so that later that day or the next day you may not remember the waking up process very well. This happens to some people but not others.
  4. M2G, Thanks for sharing the article. The article contains some interesting points, but is lacking in a lot of detail. To me the most interesting omission was the reporting of a 500 excess calorie decline in BMR after 7 months after the show ended. To me that is totally expected and makes no comment at all regarding long term effects. Instead the study would be much more useful if it showed if the BMR increased from that dip over the next few years. I would expect that after that much weight loss that there would be some excess slowing of BMR for life even, but it really matters if the participants showed a 500 calorie slowing of BMR after 5 years, or a 100 calorie slowing of BMR after 5 years. The fact that most participants showed a regain of most of their lost body weight is not a surprise either. In fact, I would have been surprised if it had shown that. It is a little surprising that only 85 - 90 percent of the participants showed substantial regain, since it is my understanding that most people who lose weight by dieting and exercise alone without surgery show a higher percentage of people who regain.

    You're not missing a thing. Think about all the food that others are having as having a selective poison. It won't hurt them if they eat it, but if you eat it it will cause you harm. Because that's the truth. When you ate it before your surgery it caused you harm, and if you ate it after your surgery it would cause you harm. It won't hurt them, but it will hurt you. Why would you want to eat anything that is a poison. It may be hard to change your attitude about this, but if you try it will really benefit you.
  7. You can also add protein powder to skimmed milk, pudding, and a variety of other foods. Also, being a month out, you can start getting more of your protein from foods. I really like lean, thin sliced turkey.
  8. I believe that now foods has an egg white Protein. It is available plain which has nothing but the egg white. It is also available in a vanilla cream flavor that has stevia as it's only artificial sweetener. It also contains xylitol, which is a natural sweetener.     Work out advice appreciated

    Just go stand near any of the Nautilus machines and wait until someone starts to use it. After they finish using it, ask them if they can show you how to use it. Most people at most gyms are glad to help out someone just starting. I've helped out many beginners over the years.

    Protein Drinks

    I think the best tasting Protein powder is a brand called "Carb Solutions." Years ago it used to be sold at Walmart and places like that, but now the only place that I know of that sells it is Drugstore.com. It is a blend of protein sources consisting of Soy Protein Isolate, Calcium Caseinate, Sodium Caseinate, whey Protein Isolate, and Dried Egg White. I only drink ready-to-drink shakes now, but up until about two years ago I used the powders. I would take this and blend it with some whey powder, which was cheaper. It would give a good flavor to the mix.     Good exercise

    Here's a list of some inner thigh exercises. I think that if your issue is one of loose skin due to weight loss that it will take some time for the skin to firm up. You can do exercises to firm it up, but only time will tighten up the loose skin.     30 minutes 3 times per week is a huge improvement compared to not working out. I would suggest that if you are going to do 30 minutes that you spend 10 minutes on cardio as a warmup, then do 20 minutes of weight lifting.

    Personal trainer?

    It's not too early. I think a trainer is a great idea for someone who is fairly new to working out. There are several things you should think about for the future. First, make sure that you like the trainer and that you are comfortable with what they want you to do. If not, switch to another trainer. Secondly, think about what you want from a trainer. There are two major approaches: The first approach is to have a trainer show you what to do, then once you learn, do the exercises on your own. They can show you how to use the machines or free weights safely, what types of exercises to do, how many reps and sets, etc. Once they have shown you that, you can continue to do the exercises on your own, and every so often get a training session just to advance your knowledge and technique. The other approach is to have the trainer do all the above things, then continue to have them work out with you on an ongoing basis. That way they can help motivate you and be almost like a paid workout buddy. You should decide which of those approaches will work best for you. Do not let the trainer steer you in making that decision. Finally keep looking at the benefits that you are getting out of the training. If it ever gets to the point that you feel like your trainer is complacent, or is just not really making a difference, then it's time to move on to someone else. Do not let them pressure you about buying training sessions that you don't want, or about anything that involves spending your money.

    The trip is once in a lifetime because of the people, not the food. You can enjoy their company even more if you weigh 30 to 60 pounds less because you then can keep up with everyone whenever they are walking around. Don't postpone the surgery.

    Stick to the plan, but change your routine some for a few weeks. If you do mostly cardio switch to weight lifting for a few weeks. If you do weight lifting switch to cardio for a few weeks. If you are doing low carbs, add more carbs in for a few weeks. If you aren't doing low carb try doing low carb for a couple of weeks. If your calories are on the high end of your target range then cut them, and if they are on the low end of your target then increase them. Make sure you are getting enough Protein and Water. After you try everything different for two weeks then switch back to what you are doing now and see if you start to lose again.

    Stomach Sleepers

    It took me 4 days before I could lie down on my stomach. I had to carefully get into that position or it was uncomfortable. That lasted about two weeks.

    Drains or no drains?

    The leak test is performed using a fluoroscope, which is a real time x-ray machine. You swallow a barium solution, and they look at your sleeve using the fluoroscope to see if any of the Fluid ends up outside your sleeve, in which case there would be a leak. The purpose of the drain is not to drain any leakage from the sleeve. Instead, its purpose is to drain fluid that "weeps" our of the edges of the incisions that were made during surgery. Your body will resorb this fluid on its own, but it can take a few days. There are some types of surgeries where surgeons will always use a drain, and some types of surgeries where surgeons will never use a drain. VSG must fall in between those two extremes because some surgeons use them and some do not use them for this surgery.

    Returning to the gym after a prolonged illness

    Start out at perhaps 1/3 - 1/2 of the weight that you used to use, and start out at 8 - 12 reps. Continue at that weight for a month, increasing your reps up to 20, but stop after 20 even if you could do more. Don't work to failure in the first several weeks. After about a month, you can increase your weight and decrease your reps. So sometime after six to eight weeks after starting to exercise again, you should be working to failure on at least one set of each exercise, with the total number of reps in each set being 8 - 12 (although serious bodybuilders would use perhaps 5 - 8 reps and more weight). Do this 3 times per week. After you have been working out for about 6 months, you can step your routine up by working on different muscle groups on different days, but during the first six months there's not much benefit to doing this. Your number one priority during all this is to avoid injury.

    Is this much protein normal?

    I was able to get to that level by the 4th day after surgery. Don't worry about not feeling full. That is normal. You won't really get to feeling full until you get to the stage in your diet where you are eating things that are more solid.
