  1. How much weight should I expect to lose before I can come off my cpap machine, or need to have it adjusted? I've been using it every night for about 2 years now, and cant sleep without it. But every since the surgery (I'm only 2 weeks postop), I am having a hard time tolerating it. I don't sleep as well, and the machine seems to bother me, almost like its blowing too much air. I have lost 35 pounds since before the surgery, but I wouldn't think that would be enough to warrant changing the pressure of the machine.

Surgery day--what to take with me?

I brought a ton of stuff, and didn't use most of it. :-) I used the gown they provided, it was just easier, and I had a lot of diarrhea from the antibiotics I was on, so it was easier to have the gown. I did use the slippers I brought, and my own pillow. I also loved the sugar free hard candy, it was nice to suck on something that had flavor. I also took a shower the next day, so it was nice to have my own toiletries, but the hospital did have some there if I needed them.
  3. I'm 5'6, highest weight was 366, I was diagnosed with sleep apnea around weight 350. I am 2 weeks post op and weigh 331. I don't remember how many times my oxygen dropped when I was sleeping, I just remember the Dr being concerned not with how many times it dropped, but how low it was dropping. I know my level is set at 10 or 12.

    Surgery tomorrow....

I waited 10 years for this surgery, and I second guessed myself all the way up until they put me under. :-) I think its totally normal. I just told myself that I was scared to have the surgery, but I was MORE scared of what would happen if I didn't. My anticipation of the surgery was so much worse than the actual surgery was. You will do great!

    shopping help

I'm not sure what your Dr's requirements are. Mine is yogurt is fine as long as its under 10g of sugar per serving. I love the Dannon Lite and fit, both the regular and greek versions are low suger, usually 7-8g per serving. The greek is 12g of protein too. I found mine at Walmart.

    me and protein don't mix

I struggled with the shakes too, but finally found one I like. I don't like the isopure fruit waters, but I love the Isopure low carb dutch chocolate. I found it at GNC. They have a return policy, so if you don't like it, you can take it back. Its not as sweet as other brands, and not as thick, so its easier to drink. I thought it didn't have as much of a nasty protein taste like other brands too.

Is it ok to take Immodium?

My Dr said yes, it was ok to take. But to be careful so you don't take too much and become constipated.
  8. My post op diet says canned veggies only, when can you eat corn? What about lettuce or cucumbers? I LOVE salads, and it will be hard to do without them.
  9. Did anyone do Lovenox shots? My Dr requires 2 weeks of lovenox (blood thinner) shots after surgery. The nurse said they will cause bruising, but OMG, I didn't expect this! Each shot is leaving a bruise about the size of a softball, no kidding! They are huge and purple and look so bad. Each one has a hard knot at the middle of it. Is there anyway to reduce the bruising? I'm switching sides each day, like the nurse said. I will be so glad when they are done.

    Hooray for the mush!

I get to start mushy foods on Tuesday! I'm soo looking forward to it. I'm not sure what your Dr allows, mine is pretty easy. They said any soft food, as long as its chewed well. They don't make us puree anything, just chew it up well, and make sure its moist, and no hard foods. I have a list ready for what I will try next week. I will start with the softer items, and progress as my tummy allows. So far I have egg salad, devilved eggs, scrambled eggs, tuna salad, chicken salad, crab salad, refried beans, mashed potatos, mashed sweet potatos, baked beans, cottage cheese, chili, canned fruit, fish, shrimp, scallops, canned veggies, egg drop soup, turkey meatballs.

    Lovenox shot questions....

Yes. The nurse gave them to me the two days in the hospital, and then I was sent home with 14 days worth that I have to do at home myself. The shots don't hurt, but the bruising is horrible. I have 6 more shots, and no where left to put them because everywhere is bruised.
  12. I use Isopure low carb protein powder. It isn't as sweet as some of the others, and not as thick. Plus it's 25g protein and only 6 ounces of liquid. So its less to drink than most. I think it tastes better than the others I tried too.

    Tea

I drink a ton of tea everyday! I use the lipton decaf tea bags, and add splenda. Its really good. Just 6 cups of hot water, and 3 large teabags. Let steep for a few minutes, then add enough ice to fill a large pitcher, and 1/2 cup splenda. If you want sweeter, add more, but I like it lightly sweet. Its been my savior for getting enough liquids in!

    Snacks

I love the sugar free pudding pops. They are a lifesaver!
  15. OMG, I'm going crazy! My incisions itch so bad! I'm 10 days post op, and they itch so bad. I know itching is normal for healing, but its driving me nuts. I hope it will go away soon. Anyone know of anything that will help?
  16. I'm 9 days post op, and starting to eat things I shouldn't! I am supposed to be on 2 weeks of liquids, cream soups and yogurt are allowed. The first week I did strictly broths and water, protein shakes. Then slowly started with yogurt and cream soups thinned with milk. Now in the last 2 days I have been slowly trying other soft foods. They are going down fine, no pain, nothing bad happening. But in the back of my mind I know I am not supposed to start soft foods for another 5 days. So far I have had a bite of mashed potatoes, a few tablespoons chili mushed up into very thin consistency, a small piece of cheese that I sucked on until it was liquid. I know I shouldn't, so why cant I say no!?! I'm not hungry, no hunger at all, I just feel like I should eat something that isn't chicken broth!

Not an emotional eater but I just LOVE food. worried.

We're twins! I have PCOS, and Insulin resistance, and just like you, I truly feel I don't emotionally eat. I am a happy person, I have a happy life, I have a great marriage, amazing kids, happy job. I don't have any reason to eat emotionally. But I did eat, lots. Not out of bordom, or emotional issues. I ate because I was hungry, all the time, and I craved food, all the time.I truly didn't understand the difference between a craving and hunger until I started my pre-op liquid diet. I had to do 2 weeks, and it was hell. The first 4 days were horrible, I was angry, hungry, and craving food bad! I felt like crap, headaches, tired. But after the first 4 days, it got easier. I was still hungry, very hungry, all the time. But I didn't crave food anymore. I am only 1 week post op, so I cant offer a lot of advice. But I can say so far its been easy. I am just not hungry anymore. I am on full liquids for another week, so maybe it will be tougher when I start eating foods. So far I am eating, but only because I have to. I have no hunger, and don't feel the need to eat, or the cravings. I eat a protein shake for breakfast, greek yogurt for lunch, 64 ounces of water thru the day, a cup of soup for dinner, and another protein shake in the evening. I am not hungry at all. I've lost 35 pounds so far, 5 of that before my pre-op, 15 on my pre-op liquid diet, and 15 since surgery a week ago. I think for people like us it will be more about beating the head hunger. The surgery will get rid of the insulin cravings, then we just need to get over our head telling us to eat when we don't need to. Part of it for me, is if I think I am hungry, I drink a glass of water. It takes me about 30 minutes to drink, and then I have to wait another 30 minutes after that before I can eat anything. If after those two, I am still hungry, then I eat something, But usually I am not.

    Full liquid ideas.... anyone?

I've been eating tomato soup made with milk, vegetarian vegetable made with water and strained, split pea, chicken broth,

    Chafing

Powder works wonders! I used to get bad rashes, but the powder stops it. I've used Vagisil powder for years under my boobs, and fat flap. :-) Just dry it well after you shower, then put the powder on, it stays dry all day. If you are heavily sweating, summer heat or working out, you can add some later in the day, but usually just once in the morning is fine. You can get it at Walmart, Target, CVS, Rite Aid.

    Unflavored protein powder.

I've been struggling with protein powders. They all taste gross to me. They have a nasty smell and pre-taste. I finally found one I like! Isopure low carb dutch chocolate is great! Its not a sweet as most of the others, and not as thick. One scoop mixes in 6 ounces of water, (I use milk), and has 25g of protein! So if you do 2 scoops, 12 ounces of liquid, its 50g protein! I got mine at GNC.

    6dpo

I'm 6 days post op too! I am allowed jello and pudding, so I have been eating greek yogurt thinned out with milk, sugar free pudding, tomato soup, chicken broth, cream of chicken soup, skim milk. lots of water, and protein shakes.
  22. I am 6 days post op and have lost 16 pounds so far from the day of surgery, and another 18 from my pre-op liquid diet. I know my mom had gastric bypass a few years ago, and she said she weighed herself two days after surgery, and she was 20 pounds heavier than the day of surgery. But I think a lot of that was gas and swelling. So if you aren't down much right after surgery, just give it some time. Your body will work it out.
  23. Yep! I am exactly like you! I am one week post op, and am not hungry at all. My family eats, and I have absolutely no desire for food of any kind. But I did dream about food two nights ago. I'm still on liquids, and in my dream I ate some food, and then was freaked out because I was afraid I would damage my sleeve. I was in a panic wondering what to do. I think its our brains way of figuring out how to adjust to this new way of eating.

My Favorite Clear Liquid with Protein

How do you mix the protein and the water? I was told that you cant heat protein or it wont mix? Do you mix it cold, then heat it? I've been wanting to mix unflavored with soups, but thought you couldn't because of the heat factor?
  25. Ah, that must be the difference. When I looked into it I was told Tricare only covers it at a military hospital, and the one near us was a 2 year wait. They wouldn't cover it at a civilian hospital. I was also told Tricare should start to cover it off base this year, most likely fiscal year Oct 2013. I decided to not wait, and I used our civilian insurance and went off base.
