  1. I had RNY 7/16/13 when I was 56 years old and 329 lbs.

11 months post op, 57 years old and I now weigh 201 lbs.

    Feeling great.

Could not have done this years ago because I was NOT in the right mindset to stick to the rules of the program. My mind is at a different level now. I believe I will keep the weight off. I do not intend to become a "fat ass" again. Being fat is painful!

  2. Foamies/Slimies - same thing as far as I'm concerned. Happens pretty quickly after I eat too fast or too much. It happened last week after one bite - I said one bite of buffalo wing that was dipped in ranch dressing. As soon as I swallowed it, the foamies came. I was at the bowling alley too and was scared to death I wouldnt make it to the bathroom but I did, through up slimy spit, then went back to bowl.

I stopped eating while bowling in my league. I stopped eating at work also because of getting the foamies. I use that time at work to get my 64 ounces of Water in and drinking my Isopure (grape flavored) Protein drink (40 g protein!). I'll snack on Peanut Butter, pieces of cheese, boiled eggs but thats about it at work. For a real meal, I eat at home - just in case!!!!!

  3. It was 17 weeks ago that I underwent a RNY because I ate too much and gained an astronomical amount of weight. The surgery went well. No problems. I've been losing on an average 3-5 lbs per week.

I had to learn the hard way how to keep from getting sick:

    1) dont eat too fast,

    2) dont eat too much,

    3) dont drink 30 minutes before and after meals.

After the RNY, my tastebuds changed. I lost my love for fried foods and in particular, fried chicken. Before surgery, I could eat that every day. Now just thinking about it makes me a little nauseous. I've gotten use to eat baked foods now. In fact, eating in general has turned into something I have to do everyday. I dont look forward to it, I dont dream of certain foods anymore. I eat till I'm satsfied, put the food down, walk away.

The only negative thing is the laziness factor. The surgery didnt cure me of that. I joined a gym in anticipation of the surgery and losing weight but I've only been there a handful of times. By the time I get home from work, all I want to do is lay down and take a nap. Last thing on my mind is going to the gym. Now I have started walking at work, trying to get some kind of exercise.

I wish I had done this surgery 20 years ago while I was young and vibrant. Now I'm 57 years old, college age kids, holding on to my job until retirement time. Husband and I bowl in a few leagues every week and that has become my life. I'm not complaining though. I'm happy that all my co-mobidities are gone and the only pills I put in my mouth daily are Vitamins.< /p>

  4. Haven't heard from many July post-op patients. I had surgery July 29th. No complications at all. No food that doesn't agree, but my diet is the strictest I've heard of. 2 weeks Clear Liquids, 2 weeks full liquids, 4 weeks puréed, and 4 weeks soft. I'm down 54 pounds in about 6 weeks. I've lost 120lb since December when I started the program.

I probably would have lost more than the 40 lbs in 8 weeks if I had been on a strict diet but they had me on pureed foods in the hospital and after I got home for 2 weeks, then soft foods for 4 weeks, and now I can eat whatever my little pouch can handle.

I see different doctors/hospitals have different approaches to bariatric surgery.

  5. Had RNY on July 16, 2013 and celebrated the 36th anniversary of my 21st birthday on July 27.

Loving life, looking forward to the future, health is getting better, I've made the right decision in having the surgery.

  6. See, this is the situation that we all have worried about. There are some doctors that have no busy doing this type of surgery. This is a damn shame that you have to go through this and for the length of time you have had this pain, they ought to be ashamed of themselves!

I'll bet money they won't forget to send you a hospital bill.

Sounds like you need a new doctor who've had alot of experience in this type of surgery and the complications.

  7. In my case, some of the comments that have been made is because of jealousy. There are women who are jealous because I will be looking good and slim while they starve themselves and live in the gym and still only lose small amounts of weight. They are "haters" and its nothing I can say or do to change their attitudes about WLS so I dont bother.

I openly discuss my journey with whoever wants to talk to me about it. I'm not ashamed at all. I embrace my anticipated new life free from "fatdom".

I ignore all the comments like "I know a guy who got the surgery and he died", "I know a bunch of people who've had the surgery and after a few years they gained the weight back", "why go through all that, just stop eating so much", "you are not that big", "if you really wanted to lose weight, you can do it without surgery".

    Haters - all of them.

    Dont have time for that!

  8. Its been 7 weeks since my life has changed and I'm happy. I turned 57 years old on July 27 - Yea Me!!! So far, I have lost 37 lbs and gone from a size 26 to a size 22:

These are the things I have noticed since my RNY surgery July 16.

    1) Menopausal hot flashes have stopped!!!! Thank you Jesus!!!!

    2) No more arthritic pain in my lower back. I can walk distances now. No longer need to ride the buggy in Walmart!

    3) Bowling balls do not fit my hand anymore. Had to get the finger inserts changed to a smaller size!!!!

    4) I'm a "cheap date" now. Husband doesnt have to spend much money on me when we go out to dinner!

    5) Everyone is noticing my weight loss and complimenting and encouraging me to continue.

    6) I have "fallen out of love" with fried foods.

    7) I have "fallen out of love" with Pepsi, Coca Cola and RC sodas.

    8) I am no longer taking blood pressure medication

    9) The entire surgical experience was pleasant (only had 3-4 days of surgical gas discomfort). Incisions were closed with a "crazy glue" type of substance that fell off as the incisions healed.

    10) Finally have learned the consequences behind overeating and eating too fast and not chewing food properly (I ended up in the bed, in a fetal position calling for my mama!!!!!)

I'm so happy with the way things are going. Looks like I'm losing on an average of 5 lbs per week, trying to lose 150 lbs.

My biggest problem: Laziness is still a problem when it comes to exercising though. I just can't seem to go to the gym. In the meantime, I'm walking places every chance I get. Just trying to keep moving.

  9. Had surgery July 16 and doing well. I can drink ice cold beverages again. Protein Shakes are NOT tolerated (I feel like I want to throw up drinking it).

Fried foods got me in this fat person position and I know I shouldnt eat it but I have. Good thing I have because since the surgery, my taste buds have changed and eating fried foods leaves a nasty aftertaste in my mouth!!!!! I can't believe I'm saying that I'm glad!!!!!

The only problem that I'm really having is laziness. I just don't want to go to the health club. Just dont feel like it. Its enough for to go to work all day and by the time I get home, I jump in the bed! I'm exhausted!!!!

I have my 6 week appointment coming up this week and hopefully the doctor will clear me to start back bowling. The leagues started at the beginning of August so I've missed a few weeks and I'm in 3 bowling leagues!!!!!! Once I'm cleared to bowl, my plan was to get a personal trainer at the health club and let him work my butt off and hopefully the tiredness I've been experiencing will go away.

As far eating - I'm still eating a couple of bites of food at a time. Walking away from it and waiting for 30 minutes so I can drink liquids. I can finally drink 64 ounces of Water per day. Not getting 60 g of Protein in but everything I eat, I make sure there is some kind of protein count in it.

I will probably lose more weight faster once I start working with this personal trainer so I'm looking forward to more weight loss. Clothes sizes - was at size 26, now wearing size 22!!!!!!!

  10. Hi I had my surgery July 31st. Im 1 week post op today (yay). Taking things one day at a time especially since I have to give myself lovenox shots (I hate these). Anybody else struggle with these shots?

Yes, Yes, yes!! I hated giving myself those shots!!!!!! Was so glad when I gave myself the last one! Doesnt it seem like the preparation for the shot takes longer than the actual shot? The needle is so sharp and goes in the skin painless, but just looking at that gives me the heebie jeebies! Its a good thing I didnt become diabetic. I would have had a problem.

  11. Well, I'm 10 days post-op and feeling really good. In fact, other than the "crazy glue" on my incisions, I do not feel like I had surgery!

I am sensitive to cold beverages so they have to be room temp or hot. I have no problem with that. I cannot do pureed foods. Out of the question. Just the smell of any foods pureed makes me dry heave.

I am existing on grits, oatmeal, refried Beans, yogurt, liver sausage, eggs (and whatever else the surgeon's office gave me in lieu of actual pureed food).

I feel so good, I'm ready to go back to work now. Watching tv all day is driving me nuts! Cant resume bowling for a few more weeks and the season starts in August but I've decided to wait until the beginning of September to start my 4 leagues and I've told all the people who need to know that.

I'm trying to avoid watching my family eat. I cannot cook for them. I nibble. So I told them right now, its about me and I have to avoid foods that will block me from losing weight so for the foreseable future, I will NOT be cooking for them. Hubby will either be forced to cook for himself and the kids or they will be "take out food junkies" for awhile.

Whatever, I dont care. Getting them fed is what brought me to this drastic stage (bypass) in the first place! My son is going back to college in a few weeks and I'm glad because he's Mr. pizza and that is one of my weaknesses. Daughter will be in her 4th year of nursing school and will be very busy so I won't see her much and have to watch her eat.

I just have to get through these next few weeks and then I think I'll have it made with the "food temptations".

  12. I'm 5 days post-op and the gas pains are driving me nuts. I was given a suggestion and I tried it and it has helped. A hot cup of Water mixed with some lemon. The taste is not good but thats not why you are drinking it. For some reason, the gas isnt so bad. It was taking my breath away!!!!! I'm not hungry, tired of drinking the Protein shakes, cannot tolerate ice in my Water so I have drink it room temperature and suppose to be on pureed food for 2 weeks but I just dont want anything. I'm just concentrating on the meds, water and the Protein Drink for right now. Maybe in a few days, I'll be ready to eat some kind of food.< /p>

Also, I have to inject myself in the stomach with blood thinning shots twice a day for 2 weeks. I hate doing that too!!!!!
